Over 120 vendors will be on display at the Parkland Rec Complex and Credit Union Place this weekend for the Parkland Business Expo, presented by Dauphin's Countryfest.

Set for Saturday from 10 until 5 and Sunday from 10 until 3, the event promises something for everybody, according to Rod Carberry.

'we figured with COuntryfest taking it over this year and having a new philosophy that it is a great opportunity to try some things.  And at the end of the day, our objective is to drive traffic in front of our vendors and make sure they get the people to talk to that they expect."

"Elsa and Spiderman will be there visiting, so the kids can come and visit them, as well as the clown show.  And then for mom and dad, Obsolete Brewing will have some beer samples in the afternoon.  So it will be a great place to sample a little bit of beer, while watching your kids have a great time with Spiderman."

There will also be axe throwing on Saturday and food trucks set up outside on both days.

Admission is free, but you must attend the expo in order to purchase tickets for Countryfest's VIP Raffle, which includes a signed guitar and a VIP experience for two at Countryfest.

Manitoba Agriculture has released its first crop report of the year.

And while some seeding has begun in the southern parts of the province, farmers in the Parkland - particularly near Roblin and Dauphin - are still dealing with saturated fields.

Dauphin MLA and provincial Ag Minister Ron Kostyshyn has been chatting with some local producers to get an idea of what will be going into the ground this year.

"Soybeans are probably going to go up a little bit more in acres versus Canola. But there is definitely a high interest in wheat.  And I have also talked to some producers that are thinking of growing Flax this year, which has a relatively good price.  So it is a mixed bag.  But I think more importantly, the question will always be will Canola acres go up or down with farming operations.  My sense is that a majority will remain status quo based on last year's projections."

Some prep work and a bit of spring wheat have already been seeded in the Swan Valley area.

This is Invasive Species awareness week, and the province is recognizing that by providing more funding to battle Zebra Mussels.

They are investing an additional $540,000, including a new fund to deliver Aquatic Invasive Species prevention resources to partners across the province.

The money will help fund community efforts to prevent their spread and to buy more specialized equipment, including high-pressure washers to clean watercraft.

Later this spring, watercraft inspection stations will be set up throughout Manitoba to help water users comply with AIS requirements.

Last year, no boats were allowed on Clear Lake due to zebra mussels being found in the water.

They were found there in November of 2023, and efforts to contain them the following summer proved unsuccessful.

Repairs are underway to fix a water main break on the Ebb & Flow First Nation.

In order for the repair work to be done, water supply has been shut off in the community from Charles St Paul's home to the front of Maadaabay.

The repairs should be completed by late this afternoon.

The excitement of professional bull riding is set to return to Dauphin in a few weeks time.

The PBR will make a return to Dauphin on Thursday, May 22nd for one show only at Credit Union Place.

Ben Kinkead with Cross Fire Bull Riding says the fit with Dauphin has been an absolute dream for them and the PBR.

He adds this year's show will have a little added importance for the competitors.

"Dauphin is a regular-season start, but due to the support and overwhelming success of last year's inaugural event, we have been able to elevate this year's event to a Tier 2 event.  That means the points are even more relevant, there are more points available, and it counts for even more of the $100,000 bonus that these guys are working towards in Edmonton in November."

With that added importance, and being one night before a Canada Cup event in Brandon, Kinkead is expecting the best bull riders on the circuit to be in Dauphin for this event.

Kinkead also said an agreement has been reached between themselves, PBR, and Dauphin Rec Services to bring this event to Dauphin for three years, beginning this year.

There are still some sponsorship possibilities for this event, including a title sponsor.

If your business is interested, you can contact Lindsay Kyle at Daauphin Rec Services at 204-622-3109.

Casey Naherniak remembers growing up helping her baba and mom cook.

Her grandma and mom owned a restaurant, so it's safe to say that cooking runs in her blood. Originally from Russell, Casey now lives in Brandon and went to the Manitoba Institute of Culinary Arts and has been working in a kitchen since she was 16.

For Naherniak, being in a kitchen is where she can zone everything else out while serving a delicious meal. She’s been perfecting her craft for years, and if you’ve ever been lucky enough to taste one of her dishes, you already know—she’s an exceptional cook

"It's definitely hard work, but it pays off when you can make something that someone really enjoys," said Naherniak. "I love creating different dishes and putting my ideas on a plate."

Naherniak loves working with dishes she hasn't, but admits her go-to is wild meat. The rising culinary star is heading to Toronto next month after earning a spot in the North American finals of Grill Masters, a competition hosted by The Keg Steakhouse + Bar. Naherniak will represent the Manitoba/Saskatchewan region on May 13.

Her first-place dish topped seven culinary artists from Manitoba and Saskatchewan at a cook-off in Winnipeg.

"I'm definitely super proud and excited. Coming from a small community and having so much support behind me is a great feeling," continued Naherniak. "I would love to bring the title back to Manitoba and especially Brandon, because we have had anyone from our Keg attend the competition."

At the national competition, Casey will be looking to wow the judges with a creation she believes will set her apart from her competitors. Her dish is called 'Forest and Field'. It's inspired by the land she grew up in and the ingredients she loves.

It features a coffee-crusted elk filet mignon, cooked sous-vide and seared to perfection, served with a rich birch syrup chocolate butter sauce, drunken amarena cherries, and a tangy lingonberry compote. She pairs it with potato pavé, wild black morel mushrooms, and sautéed peas with fresh pea shoots, finishing the plate with homemade crème fraîche, crispy golden beet chips, and edible flowers from her own greenhouse

Casey is looking forward to preparing a dish that sums her up perfectly.

"Yeah, that's kind of what I was going for, it's more personal, and I can tell my childhood through the dish," said Naherniak. "Even the plate is homemade; my boyfriend's dad and I made it from Manitoba wood."

Naherniak is no stranger to competing under the brightest of lights. She also advanced to the national finals last year, where she came up just short. Finishing in second at the finals in Vancouver, Casey is confident her dish will be a gold medal winner.

"I have elevated my dish more, I use more local wild ingredients, and I feel that's what people want," ended Naherniak. "I'm going to explain it well and give it all I got."
