West Region Treaty 2 & 4 Health Services are accepting donations of items for evacuees of the wildfires in Northern Manitoba that have relocated to Dauphin for the time being. 

Approximately 100 people have arrived in Dauphin from communities evacuated due to the fires.

Among the items needed are food, clothing, water, dog food, lunch/suppers, shampoo, snacks, and toiletries. 

Anyone wanting to drop off items can do so at the Rotary Arena.

Marcus Mclean of Brandon is facing several serious charges after two vicious attacks on Thursday morning.

At 3:00 a.m., Dauphin RCMP responded to a stabbing outside a business on 2nd Avenue SW. A 25-year-old female was found after being stabbed. She was taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening physical injuries. 

Officers then responded to a second stabbing on 2nd Avenue NE. A 53-year-old woman was suffering from serious injuries after she was stabbed. She was also sexually assaulted and was transported to the hospital in critical condition.

The 31-year-old Mclean was found a short time later and was arrested, and police dog Marook located the knife used in the attacks. Neither victim was known to the suspect, and it's believed that he acted alone.

He's been charged with Attempted Murder, Aggravated Assault, Sexual Assault with a Weapon, and Uttering Threats Against a Person.

If you're a master at puzzles, Neepawa is where you need to be on Friday night.

The great puzzle race, hosted by the Kin Club of Neepawa, takes place at the Kinsmen Kourts dining room on 307 Davidson Street. The doors open at 7, the race starts at 7:30. It's just $50 per team. 

"All the puzzles are blindly wrapped. So each team picks a random puzzle, they are all 500 pieces," Amanda Naughton-Gale, event organizer. "On your mark, get set, go. Each team races against each other to see who can get it done the quickest."

There will be prizes up for grabs. Proceeds will support the Kinsmen Kourts Gardens. That is a senior living complex in Neepawa. One part of it is semi-assisted living, and the other half is independent. 

"They have a great garden space, but they need some plants and other things to liven it up," ended Naughton-Gale. "We want to make the space more welcoming, so that's where the money is going."

There will be a special buzz in the City of Sunshine on Saturday.

Dauphin's first-ever community-wide yard sale is taking place, and let's just say, it's going to be massive.

142 properties are participating across the community, offering a wide range of items, from antiques and clothing to kids’ gear, furniture, and more.

"It's really exciting to see the amount of excitement behind our first-ever community-wide yard sale," said Christian Laughland, deputy mayor. "It's great to see how many people are taking part. I've heard people are coming from Ste. Rose, Winnipegosis, Gilbert Plains, and even McCreary."

The yard sale is from 9 to 3 and, as noted above, includes 142 properties. There is guaranteed to be something for everyone. Some tips for the day include bringing cash, coming prepared with reusable bags and boxes, and being courteous to other people and their property.

"Make sure you drive safely, there will be a ton of traffic out there," ended Laughland. "It's great to see people doing their spring cleaning and putting together a sale. The whole community is coming together, and it's fantastic."

In the courts this week, a Dauphin man arrested in early April on weapons charges was given a new court date.

21-year-old Jayden Peters will remain in custody and is due back in court on June 10th.

And another Dauphin man arrested in February after a series of break and enters in the south end of the city also had his matters put over.

18-year-old Jayson Dumas will be back in court on Monday and will also remain in custody until then.

Many of the top Junior High school rodeo competitors in the province will gather in Gilbert Plains this weekend for their provincial finals.

The action goes from Friday until Sunday, and event spokesperson Courtney Roehl says all traditional rodeo events will take place.

"There is everything from barrel racing and pole bending to bull riding and bronc riding."

This is not the first time that Gilbert Plains has hosted the junior high finals, and Roehl says the community is ready to welcome many visitors this weekend.

"It is definitely a lot of work.  We have a lot of volunteers that work together and a lot of sponsorships that come in to help put this event on.  So we want to thank everybody from the Gilbert Plains, Grandview, and Dauphin areas for sponsoring, and all of our volunteers for helping out." 

Show times are 10 am Friday and Saturday and 9 am on Sunday.

For the second time this spring, the Dauphin Consumers Co-op has made a massive donation to the Ukrainian Folk Arts Centre and Museum.

More commonly known as Selo Ukraina, the society has received a $35,000 contribution from Co-op, who last month provided them with thousands of gallons of paint in order to spruce up the festival site before Countryfest and Canada's National Ukrainian Festival.

Society President Jim Perchaluk says the money will be used towards the construction of a permanent agriculture heritage exhibit, to be located at Ukrainian Heritage Village.

"Dauphin is known for its farming background and the success over the years of producing grain that feeds the whole world. But if you travel around Dauphin, there is no permanent exhibits in our community that success in our community and how it has evolved over the years."

Total cost of the project is around 230 thousand dollars.

Good news to go along with the warm summer-like weather: The Dauphin Recreation Services has announced the opening of the Splash park for the season.

The park located at 214 2nd NW in Dauphin (which is Vermillion Park) is open daily from 9 am to 9 pm

The results are in, and Richard Kruk is in.

In Wednesday's by-election in the Gilbert Plains Municipality, Kruk secured 139 votes. This means he will now be on the Council.

Kruk's opponent, Aaron Klepak, received 61 votes.

A province-wide State of Emergency was declared by the Manitoba government yesterday.

It's in response to the wildfire situation. According to the province's fire map, there is an out-of-control fire burning near Valley River.

Wab Kinew spoke on Wednesday evening.

"This is a significant step we are taking to uphold our obligation to keep people safe," said Kinew. "We're talking about roughly 17,000 people we are looking to provide safety to and prevent loss of life."

Kinew added that this is the largest evacuation Manitoba has seen in most people's living memory. It's believed to be the largest evacuation since 1997. That's when the "Flood of the Century" in the Red River valley forced about 25,000 people from their homes.

The State of Emergency will be in effect for 30 days. It could be extended, if necessary. 

On Wednesday evening, evacuation orders were issued for the City of Flin Flon, Pimicikamak Cree Nation, Cross Lake, and Pukatawagan Cree Nation. Some of those residents will be coming to Dauphin until it is safe to return. 

"I spoke with Prime Minister Mark Carney to notify him of the State of Emergency we have declared and to ask for help from the Canadian Armed Forces," said Kinew. "The Prime Minister agreed to that request." 

Kinew also provided comments to those affected by the mass evacuations.

"This is a moment of fear, uncertainty, and concern," ended Kinew. "I want to tell you that your fellow Manitobans will welcome you. We will get through this difficult and trying period as we always do, by working together."

The party of the summer is less than a month away.

Dauphin's Countryfest goes from June 26 to 29 at Selo Ukraina, south of Dauphin.

Duane McMaster is president.

"We got the artist deposits going out right now," said McMaster. "The site crew is out there now cutting the grass. It's pretty exciting. We had our board meeting out there recently, it was great to be back on the site."

The festival begins with the CKDM Rockin' Thursday Night Kick-Off Party. It includes Kate's Outlaw, The Haileys, and the Revolving Doors, to name a few. On top of that, Thursday night will be headlined by Dallas Smith and Default.

It's going to be a Thursday to remember.

"Yeah, we're so excited about that. When Toque had to cancel at the last minute, Default stepped in," offered McMaster. "They should put on a fantastic show. They're going to have the hilltop rocking for our kick-off party."

If you've been to Countryfest before, you know how special a weekend it is. Thousands of Manitobans come together to celebrate country music. If you haven't, now is the time to make your plans to attend.

The main stage opens on Friday, and it's a sight to behold.

"That amphitheatre is an incredible place to watch a show," continued McMaster. "We're right on the edge of Riding Mountain, so there are some nice views. And we have some incredible performers this year. Incredibly, we can put this festival together and not be in a major centre."
