Dauphin Pioneer Association Celebrates 100 Years

A new feature will be revealed today at the Fort Dauphin Museum.

Pioneers of past will be recognized by the association with speeches from a few key community figures.

Treasure of the Dauphin Pioneer Association, Dean Durston says the event will showcase an important item.

"We're unveiling a special historical marker that we have just set up. It's right by the pioneer caren in front of the south gate of the Fort Dauphin Museum. So, we will be unveiling that and having a few dignitarian speeches."

The picnic begins today at 4pm with sandwiches and ice cream being served.

Missing Teen Body Found

A teenager who went missing while swimming near a dam in Manitoba has been found dead.

Travis Bauman was swimming with his brother and a friend on Wednesday near the dam in Winkler when he went underwater and didn't resurface.

R-C-M-P say Bauman's body was located by divers about 70 metres east of the dam.

Police say they're still investigating.

Winnipeg Church Fire

A fire at the Holy Trinity Ukrainian Orthodox Metropolitan Cathedral has left more than $1 million dollars in damages.

The fire that started in the back of the church late Thursday evening is being considered as suspicious, with the Winnipeg arson unit involved in the investigation.

The church is also home to the Manitoba branch of the Ukrainian Orthodox Museum of Canada.

Its Winnipeg museum has artifacts and crafts that were brought over by the first wave of Ukrainian immigrants, but thankfully the museum was not touched by the fire.

Turkey Coup Heritage Site

The World Heritage Committee has decided to ``refer'' a bid to list a huge area of boreal forest that stretches across Manitoba and Ontario as a world heritage site.

The decision to refer the Pimachiowin Aki nomination came today at a UNESCO meeting in Turkey, which was interrupted by the Friday's failed coup attempt in Turkey.

Prior to the meeting, Pimachiowin Aki Corporation learned the Pikangikum First Nation, one of the members of the corporation, was withdrawing its support for the project.

UNESCO says when an application is referred, it allows for three years to submit additional information for the committee to consider.

France Truck Attack

French authorities have detained two more people in the investigation into the Bastille Day attack in addition to five already arrested.

Also France's health minister says about 85 people remain hospitalized after a deadly truck rampage in the Mediterranean city of Nice.

18 of them are in life-threatening condition, including one child.

Space Launch

Private company SpaceX plans to launch another load of space station supplies for NASA.

The unmanned Falcon rocket is scheduled to lift off shortly after midnight from Cape Canaveral.

Excellent weather is forecast.

Aboard the rocket is a replica of a docking port destroyed in a SpaceX launch accident last summer.

Inmate at Dauphin Correctional Centre Dies

A person in custody at the Dauphin Correctional Centre has died.

For reason of privacy, limited information is available at the moment but we do know that the death has been confirmed by a spokesperson from Manitoba Justice.

The family of the deceased have been notified and an internal review has been launched regarding the case.

The Dauphin Pioneer Association Celebrates 100 Years

This weekend Dauphin will be celebrating a piece of history.

Tomorrow the Dauphin Pioneer`s Association will be hosting it`s annual picnic at the Fort Dauphin Museum. The picnic will feature dignitaries and speakers to honor the monumental accomplishment.

Treasure of the Dauphin Pioneer Association, Dean Durston says this celebration will be a special one.

Members of the Dauphin Pioneer Association are the descendants of the earliest Pioneers to the community, some going as far back as six generations.

Manitoba Church Fire In Question

Investigators say a fire at one of Winnipeg's largest churches is considered suspicious.

The damage from Thursday night's blaze at Holy Trinity Ukrainian Orthodox Metropolitan Cathedral has been pegged at more than one million dollars.

No injuries were reported in the two-alarm fire but firefighters say they encountered thick, black smoke when they arrived. It's believed the fire started on the church's main floor.

Stony Mountain Institution A Potential PokeStop

Pokemon players and characters are cropping up everywhere, even a federal prison in Manitoba.

Officials at Stony Mountain Institution issued a bulletin to corrections staff yesterday to make them aware of the game.

There are concerns Pokemon Go may lead to trespassing because some of the prison's landmarks, including the water tower, may be identified in the game as a PokeStop (a place for players to pick up tools and accessories to catch Pokemon characters).

Officials are reminding players that the correctional centre is private property, and any unauthorized entry is trespassing.

Winnipeg Jets Legends Honored

The Winnipeg Jets have dialed 40 years into the past for the first inductees of the team's hall of fame.

The Jets' prolific Hot Line, made up of Bobby Hull, Anders Hedberg and Ulf Nilsson, will be enshrined during the Heritage Classic weekend in October.

Combined, the three players scored an average of 310 points per season during the World Hockey Association Days.

They also helped lead Winnipeg to two WHA titles in 1976 and 1978.
