Tyson Kozak was drafted by the Dauphin Kings 13th overall in the 2017 MJHL U-15 Draft. This after he scored 28 goals and had 29 assists in just 36 games with the Southwest U-15 Cougars.
The 57 points were 33 more than he scored in the previous season. He was also drafted 121st overall by the Portland Winterhawks in that year so in the matter of just more than a month, the Souris native was drafted twice.
Kozak would move on to play with the Cougars U-18 team, a team he played 94 games with (including the playoffs). In his first year with that team, Kozak scored 10 goals and had 35 points. He would follow that up with an all-star campaign as he tallied 26 goals which were put together for 46 assists.
The now 17-year-old who will turn 18 on December 29, also made his debut with the Winterhawks of the Western Hockey League and he played in nine games, four of which came in the playoffs.
Ultimately his 72 point season with Southwest was his final in the Manitoba U-18 Hockey League as he earned his spot as a full-time Winterhawk in the 2019-2020 season. It ended up being a very productive rookie season for the young man as he scored 13 times and also added 16 assists.
"I definitely feel that I exceeded what I thought I was going to do with them," said Kozak. "It was a great year and I had a ton of fun."
Before everything was shut down last year because of the novel coronavirus, the Winterhawks were the class of the WHL. They finished the season with a 45-11-3-4 record as they won more games than any team -- they won the U.S. Division by one point over Everett -- and they were crowned regular-season champions. In the team's final game back on March 8, Tyson scored one goal in a 4-1 win against the Victoria Royals.
"We knew we were going to be a good team, but I don't think we expected that we would be that good" offered Kozak.
Dauphin bound:
Kozak was ready to return to Portland for his second season and that will happen; however, he is taking a detour. The WHL previously announced that it had granted temporary transfers to WHL roster players. This means players on WHL teams would be allowed to play at the Junior A, Junior B, or U-18 level until December 20.
Players would then return to their respective teams ahead of the season opening on January 8. The league has also announced that the new season will be divisional play only. That means Kozak and the Winterhawks will play alongside Seattle, Everett, Tri-City, and Spokane.
Now we go back to the start. Because Kozak was drafted by the Dauphin Kings back in 2017, he would be able to join them and that is exactly what he has done. The Souris native arrived in Dauphin earlier this week and was on the ice for his first practice with his new team back on Wednesday.
"Things are going very well. I'm getting to know the guys and everyone has welcomed me with open arms so all is good," said Kozak.
Dauphin returns to the ice in game action this Saturday and Sunday when they the OCN Blizzard in a pair of games at Credit Union Place. At practice on Thursday, Kozak was playing on a line with Charles Massey and Parker Fofonoff. Massey has scored six goals already. Although Fofonoff has been limited to just one game so far, he looked very solid in training camp before suffering an injury and he has looked solid since returning from said injury.
"It's very exciting to be back preparing for a game. I've been on the ice for a while, but it hasn't been to get ready for a game," mentioned Kozak. "Everyone seems pretty motivated to get back in game action this weekend and it's really exciting."
When it comes to Tyson's expectations with Dauphin, it's all about winning with his new team. He helped Portland last year to the best record in the WHL. Dauphin enters this weekend's play with a 3-2 record while OCN is the only winless team in the Northwest Division at 0-4-1. They trail the Swan Valley Stampeders who are 5-1.
"I just want to play a full 200-foot game. It's all about the team winning, I just want to have a good year with this team," ended Kozak. "We have a great group of guys and we're ready to make some noise moving forward as the team did a couple of times before I got here."
Five facts about Kozak:
- He loves to play golf and baseball in the summer
- His favourite professional sports teams are the Vancouver Canucks, Toronto Blue Jays, Winnipeg Blue Bombers, Toronto Raptors, and New England Patriots.
- His favourite cheat meal is apple pie.
- Country music is his favourite.
- He doesn't really have a pregame ritual, he just has a nap and tapes his stick.

The Manitoba AAA U-18 Hockey League's season is well underway and the Parkland Rangers (4-0) are one of the only three teams that are unbeaten as they join the Wild (1-0) and Eastman (3-0).
Over in Brandon, the Wheat Kings were perfect until Wednesday evening when they dropped their first game of the season. The team; however, is still 5-1 on the campaign and they sit atop the league standings heading into the weekend.
Through six games last year, the Wheat Kings were 3-3 -- all three wins came against Kenora -- and they scored 23 goals in their first six games. They finished the season at 12-34-2 which put them 26 points behind a playoff spot.
Dallas Drysdale is back for his second year as an assistant coach and he's pleased with how things are going.
"I think we have definitely exceeded expectations to start the season," said Drysdale. "We got a little bit better with some of the personnel that came up from U-15. Also, some of the U-17 guys that are now 16 got bigger and are playing with a lot of confidence. We're happy with our start, but we're not planning on taking our foot off the pedal."
Brandon's loss on Wednesday came after they were outscored 3-0 in the final period in an 8-5 loss. Despite the loss, Deniz Ntelioglou continued with his hot start to the season. He was named last week's player of the week after he scored six goals and added four assists. His two-point performance against Yellowhead on Wednesday gives him 14 points on the year and he's currently tied with Dalton Andrew.
In a game against Norman earlier this year, Deniz scored five times and had seven points. Two of his goals have come on the man advantage. He isn't the only member of the Wheat Kings who has a hot stick; however, as the team has racked up 40 goals, the most of any team. In fact, they have 11 more goals than Parkland who has the second-most.
Andrew is Deniz' teammate and five Wheat Kings have at least nine points while another two has at least six.
"These guys are making some plays and making it happen," offered Drysdale. "They're playing with confidence."
Three of Brandon's wins have come against the Southwest Cougars who are expected to be one of the top teams in the league, led by Dauphin King prospect, Zach Turner. Drysdale will be behind the bench twice this weekend as the team takes on Yellowhead for a pair of games.
Dallas will soon be back in his hometown as the Rangers welcome the Wheat Kings to town on November 17 and 20. The two teams finish a three-game series on November 21 in Brandon.
"Our defensive zone is the biggest thing we're working on right now. We know we're coming up against some tough teams and we have to continue to get better," ended Drysdale. "Things have been going pretty smooth for the most part. It's a long season and we're looking forward to our future challenges."
Drysdale says getting the chance to be an assistant coach with the storied franchise is a great honour and he loves going to the rink a few times a week.

Jordan Pernarowski played in 163 games with the Dauphin Kings and that includes a 13 game playoff run in the 2005-2006 season. In the previous season, he was named to the MJHL's all-rookie team after he scored five goals and 16 assists.
In the season where the team played 13 playoff games, Pernarowski was a common contributor to the team's success. He racked up 49 regular-season points before scoring another three playoff goals and he had nine points.
Following that season, Jordan continued his hockey career as he earned a scholarship at the University of Alaska-Fairbanks. He played in 23 games and after graduating, Jordan and his wife, Tammy moved back to Dauphin where the former King was born and raised.
Growing us as a Kings fan, Pernarowski was given the chance to get up close and personal with many members of the team throughout his young days as his parents were billets, just like the Kyle family and so many more are today. For the past three seasons, Jordan has been a billet father and his wife has been a billet mom. The Dauphinites have welcomed Nakodan Greyeyes into their home with open arms.
Greyeyes who has been back on the ice practicing with the team this week is ready to make his debut after missing the first six games of the season and all of training camp. He is in his third season with Dauphin and was an all-star last year.
"Nakodan has been absolutely amazing. He fits right in with the family," said Jordan Pernarowski. "He's an amazing kid and we're super happy that he is living with us."
It's a house of six at the Pernarowski's. Besides Jordan, Tammy, and Nakodan, Tammy's little sister, Adryanna also is living with the family as well as Jordan's and Tammy's son and daughter, Landon and Brooklyn. Landon is turning seven-years-old while Brooklyn is turning four.
"Nakodan always has time for the family and it's pretty incredible as parents to see his bond with our kids," continued Jordan. "He comes and visits in the summer to spend time with the kids, it's great."
Jordan and Tammy are treating this year as a bonus one with Greyeyes. He was originally going to play in the United States Hockey League, but decided his best option during the pandemic was to stay close to home.
Greyeyes added up 74 points last year -- 24 of which were goals -- and he could return to the lineup this weekend. The OCN Blizzard and Kings will meet twice at Credit Union Place on Saturday and Sunday.
"We're really excited to see him back on the ice and I know he is as well," ended Jordan. "We can't wait as a family to watch him again."
Spending time together at the billet Christmas party is one of the best memories that Jordan remembers. Of course, there have been so many others and there will continue being moving forward.
You can listen to Darnell Duff's full interview with Jordan during the Dauphin Kings Power Play Show which is tomorrow after the 4:00 p.m. news, weather, business, and sports.

Two years ago, Tammy Rank had a vision of getting a new ice resurfacer at the Turtle River Sports and Agriplex. On Wednesday night, Tammy's vision and dream became a reality as the Ste. Rose Minor Hockey Association officially unveiled the resurfacer and it instantly became a hit.
Purchasing the resurfacer which was roughly $70,000 wouldn't have been possible without many generous donations and hard work throughout the years. A great list of donors helped to pitch in with the purchasing.
They included the Municipality of Ste Rose who donated $25,000, Manitoba Metis Federation donated $10,000, 100 Women Who Care donated $2,500, Ste. Rose Minor Hockey donated $2,500, Ste Rose Skating Club donated $2,500, Westman Communications donated $1,000, Repromap donated $500, and Top Rank Diamond Drilling donated $300.
Through the Province of Manitoba Building Sustainable Communities Grant, each dollar was matched which also gave the crew some extra money to purchase some scrapers and other needed equipment.
"Tuesday was an extremely exciting day for us. Knowing that we can go forward and we're going to have great ice conditions," said Shelly Brunel, Treasurer for Ste. Rose Minor Hockey. "We also have a lot of other surrounding communities that use our facilities, so this makes us more marketable to book our arena."
There have been many fundraisers over the past two years to make this possible. One of the teams that will be using the Turtle River Sports and Agriplex many times this season will be the McCreary Mountaineers who will play some home games in Ste. Rose.
"We're getting a lot of compliments and things turned out better than we ever anticipated," ended Brunel.
So the next time you visit the Turtle River Sports and Agriplex, make sure you stay to watch the beautiful ice resurfacer that is now being used.

Trey Sauder's season began with the Swan Valley Stampeders. The Swan River 17-year-old was aiming to make the team and he definitely opened up some eyes throughout training camp and the preseason.
He got into one game against OCN back on September 25 in a 6-3 defeat. Although he didn't make the Stampeders this season, the gifted forward has a goal of making that team next season and with this season's AAA campaign now underway, Sauder is back with the Parkland Rangers program.
He played two seasons with the U-15 team before he went and played high school for the past two seasons.
During his time with the Swan Valley Tigers, Sauder was a man that couldn't be stopped. In the 2018-2019 season, he scored 30 goals and he added 36 assists as he won the league's scoring title with 66 points, one more than Brody Robinson.
The young man was back at it again last season when he scored 40 goals and added 37 assists as he crushed his career-high from the previous season. Just like the previous season, Sauder once again won the league's scoring title with his 77 points.
With the U-18 Rangers now as the team is 4-0, Sauder is back doing what he does best and that's scoring goals. In those four games, he's already tallied five goals and he has eight points.
His five goals are the fourth-most in the league and his eight points are tied with his teammate, Jayden Jubenvill, and are tied for the fifth-most in the league.
"I think playing high school helped me with my confidence level, I got a feeling what it was like to score and it was always a good feeling," said Sauder. "It feels great to be able to help the team win games, that's the most important thing."
Parkland is off to a great start to the season. After opening the season with a 10-1 thrashing of Norman, the team beat Yellowhead three times in a row.
They have scored 29 goals in their four games this season which is the second-most in the league behind Brandon who is 5-0. At 4-0, Parkland is in second place.
"4-0 is certainly a good start. We have a great group of guys that will do anything to help the team win," offered Sauder. "We just have to continue playing every game as hard as we can and that will give us our best chance to win."
Parkland practiced last night, they will practice tomorrow night and once next Tuesday before they're back in action.
They continue with divisional play as they play three straight against the Southwest Cougars, beginning next Wednesday. Although the Cougars have lost three games, all three have come in overtime and they are expected to be one of the top teams in the league.
One of their leaders is Zach Turner who is a Dauphin King prospect.
After the three games against Southwest, Parkland plays Norman three times in a row before continuing in their division to play three straight against Brandon. Playing just a 36 game schedule, Sauder knows how important every game is the rest of the way.
"We have to stay disciplined and we can't take a period off," ended Sauder. "Our coaches are great and they help us succeed. I think everyone is looking forward to the challenge coming up with some really good teams."
Dauphin's next game at Credit Union Place is next Friday when the Cougars are in town. Moving forward this month, the Rangers are on home ice at Credit Union Place on November 14, 15, 17, and 20. Dauphin plays in Swan River on November 13 against Norman.

If you're a Dauphin Kings fan, you're in for a treat this weekend. The team was originally set to play on Friday in OCN before returning on Saturday to Credit Union Place.
Dauphin will still play in town on Saturday; however, they will now play another game on Sunday. Friday's game in OCN has been changed and will now be played at Credit Union Place on Sunday evening. OCN will serve as the home team for the game.
"Ice conditions aren't seeming to work out in OCN right now, so this is what's happening," said Christian Laughland. "It's going to be a road/home game for us so it's exciting."
Season ticket holders will be able to reserve their seat(s) for the game for just $5. The South Ticket Office will open at 12:00 p.m. on Thursday so that season ticket holders can reserve their seats for the game on Sunday.
If season ticket holders do not purchase their seats for Sunday's game by 5:00 p.m on Friday they will be released to the general public on Saturday. Sunday's tickets will go on sale beginning at 12:00 p.m. at regular Dauphin Kings prices.
Darnell Duff will broadcast the game beginning with the pregame show at 7:15.

Haydn Delorme played 68 games as a member of the Coquitlam Express in the British Columbia Hockey League. He followed that up with 35 games with the Portland Winterhawks of the Western Hockey League and then he had a brief stint of 15 games with the Prince George Spruce Kings.
All of those places are without great places to play; however, it's Delorme's most recent stop that has him enjoying things the most. The 20-year-old from Port Moody was acquired by the Swan Valley Stampeders in the off-season. He had four goals in just 14 games with Spruce George last season so Barry Wolff knew he was bringing him in to put up points.
"I love it here, it's super awesome," said Delorme. "I know we can't have a full arena because of covid-19, but the fans that come out are super passionate and they support us really well."
Delorme is now six games into his final season as a junior hockey player and first as a Stampeder and it's certainly off to a tremendous start. In those six contests, Delorme has scored four goals and he's added nine assists for a 13 point total.
To put how dominating of a start to the season this has been into perspective, Delorme is just one point shy of breaking his all-time high in junior points. Back in the 2017-2018 season with Coquitlam, he scored six times and had eight assists.
That total came in 53 games. If Delorme remains healthy, he will play in 34 more regular-season games leading up to the playoffs in March. His 13 points have him tied with Ethan Hersant of the Winnipeg Blues for the most in the Manitoba Junior Hockey League.
This past weekend in the first two of four straight games against Waywayseecappo, Haydn scored three times and had one assist, and thanks to his hot weekend, he's been named the Northwest Division Star of the Week.
"I know I was brought in here to produce offensively and I'm glad that I've been able to do that so far," offered Delorme. "The team is also winning games so that's really the most important thing, I just want to help this team win."
Heading into another two-game set with Waywayseecappo this weekend, Swan Valley leads the Northwest Division at 5-1. Their 10 points are four more than both Wayway and Dauphin who both have three wins going into this weekend. The team's five wins are tied with the Blues and Virden as the most in the league.
"We've been playing really well and everyone is buying in right now," ended Delorme. "Everyone knows their role and when everyone does that, it makes things that much easier."
Going back to 2015, Haydn was drafted by the Vancouver Giants, 179th overall in the WHL U-15 draft. Dauphin fans can watch the skilled forward for the first time on November 20 when the Kings and Stampeders open up an eight-game season series.

Tuesday has been a big day for the Dauphin Kings. The team started the day by making a trade to acquire Layne Toder from the Portage Terriers.
Dauphin has now added Tyson Kozak to their roster moving forward. He comes from the Portland Winterhawks of the Western Hockey League. He scored 13 goals last season and had 16 assists and he was also named to the NHL Central Scouting "Players to Watch" List for the 2021 NHL Draft.
From Souris, Dauphin drafted him 13th overall in the 2017 MJHL Draft.
"We knew he was an exceptional player when we drafted him," said Doug Hedley, Head Coach, and General Manager. "We're very excited to get him in here and we can't wait to work with him."
Kozak will officially hit the ice for his first practice with Dauphin on Wednesday afternoon. Tyson stands at five-foot-eleven and 161 pounds. In his final year with the Manitoba AAA U18 Hockey League's Southwest Cougars, he put up 72 points (26G, 46A) in 40 contests.
"He's a player that works extremely hard at both ends of the ice. He has exceptional speed and he should fit into our lineup very well," ended Hedley.

Layne Toder is the newest member of the Dauphin Kings. The 20-year-old from Elkhorn was acquired in a trade on Tuesday from the Portage Terriers.
The biggest piece going back to Portage is Cole DeKoninck. Joining DeKoninck going Portage's way is Dylan Winsor and Noah Wagner.
Toder broke on to the junior scene in the 2016-2017 season with Portage where he scored 11 times and added 17 assists in 44 regular-season games. He would then score one more goal and he added eight more assists in 18 playoff games that season.
Following that year, Layne made his way to the Western Hockey League where he played 173 games (including playoffs). He tallied five goals during that time and chipped in with 25 assists. He was an 85th overall selection by the Hitmen in the 2015 WHL U-15 Draft.
Dauphin also receives a 2021 2nd round pick and future considerations.
So far this season in six games, Layne had two assists for a Portage team that is currently 2-3-0-1 and is at the bottom of the Interior Division.
Heading into this weekend, Dauphin plays a home-and-home against the OCN Blizzard and Darnell Duff has Friday's broadcast beginning at 6:45 with the Parkland Source for Sports pregame show.
