Mike Glover's final season as a competitive hockey player was in the 2008-09 season where he scored 10 times in 12 games and had nine assists with the Oak Lake Icemen of the North Central Hockey League.

Nine years prior to that, he played 37 games with the OCN Blizzard, scoring seven times and adding 11 assists. The following season, Mike joined the Dauphin Kings. In 63 games with Dauphin, Glover had 14 goals to go along with 28 assists and 72 penalty minutes. Glover ended that season as Dauphin's fourth leading scorer.

Now 22 years removed from playing in Dauphin, Mike will be making many trips to the city this year as his son Cayden has joined the Kings. Cayden was reassigned by the Prince George Cougars of the Western Hockey League earlier this week and he's thrilled to be in Dauphin.

"I'm glad to be here, it's been an easy transition so far," said Glover. "I knew a few guys which always makes it easy when joining a new team. The hockey is great, I'm ready to get down to business."

With a couple of practices under his belt, Glover is impressed with the team's work ethic.

"Every single person on the team gives it their all every practice," offered Glover. "It's also a very tight-knit group, everyone is good buddies. I'm really looking forward to seeing what we can do here."

Originally from Brandon, Cayden played 116 regular season games in the WHL and seven more playoff games. He started with the Medicine Hat Tigers after he was drafted 25th overall in the 2019 WHL U15 Draft. Cayden was in math class when he was selected by the Tigers so he left the classroom to talk with his friends about the big news. Leading up to draft day, Glover highly impressed scouts as he scored 47 times and had 19 assists in the 2018-19 season with the U15 Wheat Kings.

"I was super excited, it was an incredible moment for me," said Glover. "My friends were all super happy for me, it was pretty cool."

Later that season, Glover represented Manitoba at the WHL Cup and while they had to settle for bronze after losing to Saskatchewan in the final, Cayden says that was his most enjoyable season to date. Glover would go on to play 30 games with Medicine Hat before he was dealt to Prince George, where he played 82 regular season games and the seven playoff games.

"The WHL was a huge transition from U18 hockey, it took me quite a while to get used to it," said Glover. "The experiences were great and playing with Medicine Hat and Prince George was great. I was happy then and I'm happy now to be in Dauphin."

Coming in at 6'1", Cayden pairs his solid size with a great shot and speed and it will be on display for the first time for Kings fans on Saturday when Dauphin hosts the Neepawa Titans. The Kings downed Neepawa, 6-2, last week and they are now looking for their sixth win of the season.

"It's going to be super cool skating on the ice for the first time wearing a Dauphin jersey," offered Glover. "I've heard the fans here are incredible and I can't wait to be a part of it."

Some of the top soccer players in the province are set to invade Dauphin this weekend.

The Dauphin Clippers program are set to host the A-AA-AAA provincial championships at Vermillion Sportsplex beginning on Friday morning. 10 teams on the boys side and 10 teams on the girls side will all battle for a provincial title to be awarded Saturday.

Cory Armstrong is with the program and he's looking forward to welcoming everyone to our community.

"It's very exciting, especially because we are playing as zone representatives on both the girls and boys side," said Armstrong. "We're not the host, so everyone is feeling very good heading into the event."

The girls team is ranked seventh heading in as they will play the Hapnot Kopper Queens in their first game. If they can get past Hapnot, Dauphin will advance to play the Niverville Panthers, a team that is ranked second. Other teams include the Swan Valley Tigers, Stonewall Rams, W.C. Miller Aces, Morden Thunder, Neepawa Tigers, Minnedosa Chancellors, and the Garden Valley Zodiacs.

Cory knows the team will be in tough, but they are confident.

"I would see this girls making the semi-finals with a chance to play for a gold medal," said Armstrong. "It is a very capable team, so you never know what could happen."

The boys; meanwhile, enter the event ranked ninth. They will play a very solid Frontier team in their first game and if they win, they go up against the top-ranked Northlands Parkway team. If they come up short in their first game, the team will move to the consolation side.

"We're going to give it a go, we know it's going to be very tough on us," offered Armstrong. "We'll see how we make out in that first game."

Armstrong closed by saying Dauphin is the perfect community host an event like this.

"Our fields are exceptional and our facilities as a whole," ended Armstrong. "We have four very nice fields, it just adds great value to an event like this."

The Parkland U15 Rangers are back home after their first showcase of the weekend.

Despite showing signs of some great play throughout the weekend, Parkland dropped all three games they played.

Game 1:

Parkland was just 45 seconds away from earning a point in their first game against the Winnipeg Bruins Brown; however, Gavin Fay scored with just that time remaining as they stole a 6-5 win. Brayden Budolowski led the way with a pair of goals for Parkland in the game while Dayson Martin, Noah Smigelsky, and Joshua Weir also scored for Parkland in the defeat.

Game 2:

Kyle Pelletier finished with 29 saves as Parkland lost, 7-3, to Winnipeg Wild Red. Brayden Budolowski found the back of the net for the second straight game while Fynn Huberdeau also scored. Reese Scott scored the team's third goal.

Game 3:

The Bruins Black proved to be too much for Parkland as they downed the Rangers handily, 9-3.

Budolowski scored for the third straigthg ame to finish the weekend with three goals. Ben Poole and Sam Lacasse also scored for the Rangers.

Parkland will now play the 2-1 Thrashers White on Saturday afternoon at Credit Union Place at 4:00 p.m.

Already off to a red-hot start to their season in the Manitoba AAA U18 Hockey League, the Brandon Wheat Kings have received a big boost.

As the Western Hockey League's Wheat Kings embark on their annual west coast trip, the organization has reassigned forwards Easton Odut and Jaxon Jacobson to the AAA club.

Both young prospects cracked the opening day WHL roster, but will now work on their games at the AAA level. Odut played six games with Brandon this year, compiling 10 penalty minutes while Jacobson did not suit up in a regular season game, he's only 14-years-old. The U18 club has dominated their opponents this year, going 4-0 scoring 23 goals and giving up just seven.

Late on Monday night, the WHL Wheat Kings received a boost as Nate Danielson was reassigned by the Detroit Red Wings back to Brandon. The Wheat Kings open their seven-game road trip on Wednesday against Tyson Zimmer of Russell and the rest of the Lethbridge Hurricanes. On the nearly two-week trip, Brandon also plays Tri-City, Spokane, Seattle, Portland, Everett, and Wenatchee.

As another week of regular season play is set to commence in the Manitoba Junior Hockey League, a pair of teams in the league are among the best in Canada.

As per the most recent Canadian Junior Hockey League's Top 20 rankings, the Winkler Flyers are ranked as the third best team in the country. The Dauphin Kings are ranked 14th. The top team in Canada is the Smith Falls Bears of the Central Canada Hockey League (CCHL) and the Humboldt Broncos of the Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League (SJHL).

The Bears of the CCHL have won their first nine games of the season, scoring 35 goals and giving up just 15. Humboldt; meanwhile, have won all four of their games in dominating fashion by scoring 24 goals and giving up just six.

In the MJHL, the Flyers remain the only perfect team in the league with six wins in their first six games. Their 26 goals for are the most in the league while the team has been nothing short of tremendous defensively giving up just nine goals, which is a league-low. Winkler is paced by an extremely strong balanced attack as seven players have posted at least five points and another five have at least three.

Jayce Legaarden, a former Parkland Ranger all-star, is off to a solid start with one goal and four assists in six games. The Grandview native is well on his way to recording an all-star year.

Winkler's next two games are on home ice as they continue a three-game homestand which begun with a 4-2 double up of Selkirk. They play Waywayseecappo on Sunday and don't play again until the following Saturday against OCN. Winkler plays Dauphin on October 24 at the showcase in Winnipeg.

The Dauphin Kings; meanwhile, are also off to a great start with wins in five of their six games. Dauphin has notched 23 goals while the team's 10 goals against are the second-best in the league, only behind Winkler. Just like Winkler, Dauphin has used a very well balanced approach to find success early. Nine players have at least three points, led by rookie Gabriel Bugeaud who has six points in as many games. To note, another three players have a pair of points.

While the team has plenty of offensive talent, it's their defence that puts them a step above most teams. Dauphin's strength on the back end is very well balanced as their scoring attack is, and they have been very tough to get past this season. With the likes of Aidan Brook, Nolan Wickham, Anthony Bax, and Naaman Hofer leading the top two pairings defensively, Trey Gnetz and Karson Raymond have been an excellent third pairing.

Hofer recently scored the game-winning goal in a comeback affair against the Portage Terriers. Cole Sheffield has been brilliant in net so far with five wins in as many starts and he has a .931 save percentage to go along with a 1.60 goals-against average. Austin Seibel put together a strong performance in his lone game of the season, a 2-1 loss to Selkirk.

Who has the edge?

Statisically speaking, the Flyers do as they're 6-0. Like Sheffield, Winker's goaltending duo has been outstanding.  Liam Ernst of White City is 3-0 with a sparkling .958 save percentage to go along with a phenomanal 1.00 goals-against average. Malachi Klassen has a .912 save percentage to go along with a 1.95 goals-against average and he has also won three games.

There really isn't much to seperate the Kings and Flyers at this point. A marquee matchup between the two and first of the season is coming up in exactly two weeks (as of posting) at the Seven Oaks Sportsplex at 1:00 p.m.

Category by Category, who gets the edge:

Offensive - Dauphin

Defensive - Dauphin

Goaltending - Winkler

Home-ice advantage - Winkler

The Parkland U18 Rangers earned their first point of the season this weekend.

Opening up their first two-game homestand of the season against Eastman, the Rangers stuck right with the Selects and nearly earned the full two points. The Rangers led Saturday's game with less than three minutes left before the Selects tied it.

The Selects ultimately won the game 4-3 in overtime as Parkland earned a single point. Cade Legaarden, Cash Clarkson and Quinten Fisk scored in the game for Parkland. Chase Glover made 45 saves in the overtime defeat.

On Sunday, it wasn't the same result for Parkland as they lost 10-1 to wrap up the weekend. Quinten Fisk scored Parkland's goal in the game.

The Dauphin Clippers football team is starting to build some momentum.

After a huge win against Parkwest, the Clippers came out just as strong against Neepawa in a commanding 27-12 victory.

Will Miner had a monster game for the Clippers with 168 yards on the ground while Cody Zurba completed seven of his 11 passes.

Declan Waggoner led the way defensively with six tackles while Riley Lobert had three tackles and three interceptions. Lars Gudbjartson had three tackles, two assists and two fumble recoveries.

The Dauphin Kings erupted in the third period on Friday night as they skated to their fifth win of the season in convincing fashion.

Dauphin broke a 1-1 tie heading into the third with five goals in the final frame while Neepawa could score just once as the Kings downed the Titans, 6-2.

Rylan Gibbs of Dauphin and Havyril Simchuk both scored their first goals of the season for Dauphin in what turned out to be a convincing win.

Logan Walker, Blake Boudreau, Anthony Bax, and Jordan Bax also scored for Dauphin in the game.

The Kings won't play again until next Saturday when they welcome Neepawa again to town.

The Dauphin Clippers girls and boys soccer teams will get the chance to defend their home turf at the provincial championships.

Competing in zones this week, the Clipper boys looked very impressive as they won a pair of games to win the event. First up, they throttled Alonsa, 12-1. Then in an ultra tight game against Swan Valley, the Clippers beat the Tigers, 4-3.

On the girls side, the Clippers played a perfect second half by scoring two goals in a 2-0 win against the Tigers. Dauphin will now host the provincial championships for the boys and girls next weekend, October 13 and 14.

The Dauphin Clippers varsity girls 7's rugby team has done it.

For the first time ever, the team has won a provincial championship at the 7's level. They did so by winning both of their games at the provincials on Friday.

In their first game against Steinbach, Dauphin led from start to finish as they won 49-5. Then in the finals against Crocus Plains, a team Dauphin has beaten in the past, the Clippers came out and once again performed well in downing the Plainsmen, 28-20.

Their provincial banner is the team's seccond they won this week as they recently also won the Westman High School Rugby League crown. They won 10 of their 12 games.

"It feels absolutely amazing," said Shawn Sarkonak. "The girls worked really hard and the game went right down to the wire, I'm so proud of them."

It is very early in the Manitoba Junior Hockey League season but there is no rookie scorer that has been more efficient than Gabriel Bugeaud of the Dauphin Kings.

In fact, there are only three rookies in the entire league that has been as efficient. With three goals and two assists to start the campaign, Gabriel is tied for the rookie scoring lead. Bugeaud, of Terrebonne, QC, had quite the debut with Dauphin as he scored the game-winner in the team's first win of the season, a convincing 7-1 romp over the Swan Valley Stampeders on opening night.

Gabriel has blistering speed which he pairs with a great shot, but not even he expected this production to begin his junior career.

"I didn't expect as much as this, with that said, I am very confident in my abilities," said Bugeaud. "I believe I can make an impact at this level, it's just now about being consistent and keeping up with my day-to-day habits."

Consistency is a word that is used a lot in the sports world. Teams have to be consistent to win and for Gabriel, his journey to being a consistent player starts away from the rink.

"It starts by having good habits at home, eating well and going to bed at a reasonable time," offered Bugeaud. "When it comes to at the rink, it's about being early and being ready to go the second we step on the ice. I strive to be as consistent as I can and it's an exciting process."

Gabriel came over from the Notre Dame Hounds program, where he played the past two seasons. In 40 games last year, Bugeaud scored 11 times while adding 22 assists and he also had 24 penalty minutes. Bugeaud will look to keep it going on Friday night when the Kings welcome the Neepawa Titans to Credit Union Place at 7:30. Gabriel has enjoyed playing in Credit Union Place and he's once again looking forward to seeing Kings fans on Friday night.

Dauphin has the chance to win their fifth game of the campaign.

"We have some amazing fans, it's always more enjoyable playing in front of big crowds because they bring a lot of energy," said Bugeaud.

Get to know Gabriel:

Do you have any siblings? I have two younger brothers, we grew up fairly close. We played a bunch of sports together growing up.

What kind of music do you like and who is your favourite artist? I like a little bit of country and hip-hop, I'm listening to Drake's new album right now and it's really good. I also really like Morgan Wallen and Zach Bryan, they're putting out some great tunes.

If you could travel anywhere with anyone, where would it be and why? I would want to go on a golf trip with my dad and brother. Somewhere hot.

Are you a good golfer? I used to play a lot of tournaments growing up, but I sort of got it away from it over the past couple of years.

He's off to a great start with his new team and Gabriel Bugeaud is primed for an all-star season. You can hear Gabriel's full conversation with Darnell Duff during the Dauphin Kings Power Play Show on Friday afternoon just after 4:00 p.m.
