When the Dauphin Kings open up their main camp later this month, a newly acquired forward will be there.

The team traded for Shon-Olivier Roy in exchange for Future Considerations. Roy comes from Longueuil Collège-Français of the Quebec AAA Junior Hockey League.

"Talking to a few people he's got a decent skill set, good speed and we're hoping he's a kid that can finish for us," said Doug Hedley, Head Coach, and General Manager. "He played on a veteran team last year so he was kind of in the bottom nine."

"Since Noah Basarab decided to head to the NAHL, we're hoping he can fit in nicely," he added.

Roy had 18 regular-season points last year in 44 games. (9G). He also added four points (1G) in 13 playoff games.

"The opportunity for him to be an impact player here is there for him," added Hedley.

Main camp is set to start on Thursday, August 29. It rolls on right through the weekend, ending with the JoFo Cup. The preseason starts on September 2 against the Swan Valley Stampeders.

Two seasons ago, Dauphin went 14-44-1-1 which gave them 30 points. Under Hedley last year, the team dramatically improved. They ended up with 64 points off of 29 regular-season wins. They also clinched a playoff spot. With the 2019-20 regular season just over a month away, Hedley is ready to take the next step in his second year back with the organization.

"There's no question that we want to get better and we need to get better," added Hedley. "We have some young guys that now have a year under their belt in the league. We're going to be a very competitive team."

"I think the league is going to be very tough this year," he concluded. "Every team is going to be improved. We just need to make sure we work hard and step up. Our goal is definitely getting a Top 3 spot in the first 60 games."

You can catch the Kings preseason opener on September 2 as it comes at Credit Union Place. The puck drops at 7:30.

The best ball hockey players in the world are heading to Brandon in 2021.

The Wheat City will host the 2021 World Ball Hockey Championships. All games will be played at Westoba Place, which is the home of the WHL's Brandon Wheat Kings.

The event is set to welcome 30 to 40 of the best women's and men's ball hockey teams from around the world. Teams representing Canada, Finland, Russia, the Czech Republic and much more will be in attendance.

It's set for June 11 through the 19, 2021. This is the third time Canada will host the event and the first time Brandon will.

"It's really exciting that this event is coming to Brandon," said Jeff Dzikowicz, Chair of the Host Committee. "It's going to be a super fun event. When it comes down to it, it's hockey without skates. Brandon is a hockey community and I know everyone there is going to fall in love with it."

The World Ball Hockey Championships are held every two years. At this past event back in June, Slovakia won in their home country on the men's side. On the women's side, the Canadian women finished on top.

As Slovakia looks to repeat in two years time on the men's side and the Canadian women look to do the same, a quality field is guaranteed.

"Just recently at our B, C, D Championships in Montreal, a team from Winnipeg was able to recruit Michael Ferland who of course plays in the NHL and is a former Brandon Wheat King," continued Dzikowicz. "He was super surprised at the level of talent at the "B" level and that's not even the top."

"I think that just speaks to how much talent will be coming to Brandon," he added. "Especially because that was only players from Canada, this event is the whole world."

With the tournament being on home soil, Jeff knows both the Canadian men and women will have some extra pressure on them.

"With the women coming off a gold medal, the pressure will for sure be on them from the inside," he concluded. "There is always pressure on Canadians because everyone looks at us as a hockey country. The men are always ranked high, but haven't got it done but are always close. Maybe being on home soil is what this team needs to push over the top."

Ticket prices and volunteer opportunities information will be provided shortly.

The curling season has yet to start for most, but it has for Dauphin's Lane Prokopowich.

Lane and the rest of Team Serena Gray-Withers spent a few days last week in Alberta. The foursome was at the Kevin Martin Curling Academy inside the Saville Centre.

The three-day trek for the team included some work in the classroom, a fitness session and plenty of time on the ice.

"Taking part in this really gave us a good head start to the season. We should be ready come the fall," said Prokopowich.

The camp included several instructors. Most notably, it was Kevin Martin who has won an Olympic gold medal, world, and four Canadian Championships.

Also at the camp was Kelsey Rocque who's a rising star. Playing all of their curling in Manitoba, getting used to the style in Alberta was something the foursome had to learn.

"They definitely have some different ways of seeing the game," added Prokopowich. "We took our slides, broke it down and basically started from scratch. We went through every aspect to build things up into something that will work for us in Manitoba."

Is the team better now than they were prior to the camp? That's a no-brainer.

"They really stressed what we need to work on," she added. "We also now know more about our roles and stuff like that."

The team now gets a few weeks off. They'll play in the Morris Fall Manitoba Junior Curling Tour event.

"We're definitely really excited, especially after our camp in Alberta," she added. "This couple of weeks will be a little tough on us, but it allows us to absolutely be ready for next month."

Prokopowich will also get the chance to play at home early next year. The team will play in the Canola Growers Junior Provincial Championships, which start on January 1. They're being played at Credit Union Place and the Dauphin Curling Club.

"I've been waiting for this for so long ever since I started curling," she concluded. "When I was in Dauphin we always went to Winnipeg for provincials. Now that I'm in Winnipeg, it's going to be so great to go back home and play in that big event. Playing in front of my family and friends truly will be a very special moment."

Janarion Grant had a tough task in his CFL debut for the Winnipeg Blue Bombers. It came against the Calgary Stampeders, but that sure didn't stop the former Rutgers player.

Grant is one of the CFL Top Performers of Week 9. He had an outstanding performance last week with 222 punt return yards. That includes two touchdowns.

He also had 84 kickoff return yards, for a total of 306 all-purpose yards to begin his CFL career.

Brandon Banks and CJ Gable are the other Top Performers.

They beat Treaty 2/Kiniw, 12-8.

Bradyn Smelski led the way for Aspen Insurance with three goals.

The main camp roster continues to shape up for the Swan Valley Stampeders. They've added 1999 born Tommy Cardinal.

Cardinal, from Quebec, played 53 games last year with the Whitecourt Wolverines, where he had seven goals and nine assists.

Swan Valley picked Tommy up in exchange for Vincent Duplessis.

"We were always planning on flipping Vincent for some scoring and that's what we did," said Geoff Grimwood, Head Coach & General Manager. "We're really excited about Tommy coming to Swan Valley."

Prior to joining Whitecourt last year, Tommy played 111 games in the QMJHL, most of which came with Shawinigan.

"Everything we've heard about Tommy is great. He's got a great character and he's going to be a leader," continued Grimwood. "We think he's going to be a guy that's going to get on the scoresheet for us."

Swan Valley opens up main camp on August 30. With less than three weeks to go, Grimwood is ready for his first camp as the head coach and general manager of Swan Valley.

"I think we're going to have a very competitive camp. For me being new here, there's a lot of new faces to get to know and I'm looking forward to that," he concluded. "Our scouting staff has done a real nice job. I think we're going to have a really good time this year."

Swan Valley opens up their preseason on September 2 in Dauphin against the Kings at 7:30.

Once a year, the Mackenzie Tour makes a stop in Manitoba for an event. That event is this weekend as the golf season continues to wind down.

The Southwood Golf & Country Club will play host to the Players Cup. The tournaments offers up a purse of $200,000 and it's the 10th of 12 events on the schedule. It also so happens that this year is the 100th Anniversary of the event.

That means admission to this year's tournament is totally free to celebrate.

"Last year turned out great for everyone, the golfers and spectators really enjoyed the Southwood Golf & Country Club," said Adam Boge, Executive Director. "For anyone that hasn't seen this event before, we highly recommend you doing so this week. It's going to be a fantastic week with some amazing shots."

Past players on the Mackenzie Tour include Tyler McCumber and Kramer Hickok. McCumber won last year's event and he's now ranked #21 on the Korn Ferry Tour's Order of Merit. The top 25 earn their PGA Card for the next season. Kramer Hickok won the Players Cup in 2017. This year on the PGA Tour, he made just shy of $500,000.

Tony Finau and Corey Conners also highlight past players, both of which are successful on the PGA Tour.

Kyle Connor of the Winnipeg Jets will also be playing in the event. He's on a Sponsors Exemption.

"You're definitely in for a treat," concluded Boge. "This is really high-level golf and I think a lot of people will be surprised at how good the talent actually is."

With it being the 100th Anniversary, there will be special concessions as well as a Long Drive and Putting contest throughout the weekend.

The Mackenzie Tour is just two steps away from playing on the PGA Tour. For instance, Paul Barjon leads this year's Mackenzie Tour Order of Merit. Should he remain in the Top 5, he will earn his spot on the Korn Ferry Tour for next season. If Paul is in the Top 25 of the Korn Ferry Tour, he will advance to the PGA Tour, two seasons from now.
