Manitoba Infrastructure has committed to making changes at an intersection in Swan River that has been prone to collisions.

The Government of Manitoba released a new report that shows the perspective of almost 350 Manitobans on safety improvements at the intersection between Highway 10 and 83.

These Manitobans had participated in an online public engagement about ways to improve safety at the intersection.

Two options were presented to residents of Swan River for input: the addition of protected left-turn lanes, and the construction of a new roundabout.

76 percent of respondents preferred the addition of a protected turn lane over the construction of a new roundabout.

Manitoba Infrastructure is implementing the improvements and construction is anticipated to be underway in the 2022 construction season.

On Wednesday afternoon Stephen Chychota and the Dauphin Chamber of Commerce gave out over 1300 sealed envelopes containing gift cards to local businesses, totalling over $25,000.

Chychota says that the Chamber started buying gift cards for the COVID relief event all the way back in December of 2020 when they secured funding from the Manitoba Chamber of Commerce.

"It's been something that's been in the works for a few months now,"

The Chamber put $10,000 into the program, which then was matched by the city of Dauphin, and met with an additional $5,000 from the community fund—totalling the $25,000 available.

This program wasn't just for the city of Dauphin. The Chamber reached out to Gilbert Plains, Winnipegosis, and St Rose to help support businesses that COVID has impacted.

"The idea of this program is that it carries on. Hopefully, people spend more than the face value of the card. Overall the 25,000 investment could mean 50,000 or 80,000 across the whole."

Chychota and the Chamber have plans to continue giving back to the community as additional funding streams have recently opened from the Manitoba chamber, which means federal dollars can be applied for.

Chychota couldn't comment on these plans as the details still need to be ironed out. However, he did say it will be community-based across the region.

The traditional August long weekend Grandview Mud Bog has been cancelled due to health restrictions in the province this year.

Grandview Rec Director Jill Wiebe commented on the cancellation:

“We usually do have a big crowd attend the Mud Bog. But since we have large numbers, we can't have it in the capacity that we wish, so we are going to postpone it and make it bigger and better for next year.”

In the meantime, the Grandview Kinsmen have plans to upgrade Wilson Park, where the Mud Bog is held each year.

The major upgrade of note is to build a permanent stage to host concerts and other such events at Wilson Park.

The stage is set to be constructed this summer and ready for the 2022 Grandview Mud Bog.

Dauphin Regional Comprehensive Secondary School is displaying a new sign by its front doors.

The sign reads: ‘EVERY CHILD MATTERS’ and has the number 215 in the middle to commemorate the 215 children found in the mass grave at the Kamloops residential school.

It was created by welding instructor, Jason Rudkavich, and Educational Assistant, Wendy Wellborn.

Jason says that he wanted to do something as soon as he heard about the Kamloops tragedy, but wasn’t sure what to do at first.

He ended up designing the sign, and he and Wendy painted it. Collision Repair Teacher, Bryan Hannibal clear-coated it so that it can be displayed outside for all to see.

Wendy says the tragedy is history, and that our history shouldn’t be erased, good or bad, because you learn from it.

Grade 12 student, Morgan Sametz is this year’s winner of Dauphin Regional Comprehensive Secondary School’s Car Giveaway.

Morgan says she wasn’t expecting to win.

“On the way here I was thinking is this about my credits, did I win a scholarship or something like that. I kind of had an idea that it was about the car, but I wasn’t expecting it.”

Something unique about the car she won is that it’s a right-hand driving vehicle.

“I don’t fully have my license yet so driving, in general, is a little intimidating, so getting used to the right-hand drive will be a little different, but I think I’ll get used to it pretty fast.”

Patty Goodine, who’s a teacher at the high school, says they started doing this car giveaway six years ago, and initially it was to boost attendance.

“We had this car last year, but we couldn’t give it away because we started out with the attendance incentive but COVID sent us home. So we brainstormed and decided that we just wanted students to say why they deserved the car.”

The cars that the school gets every year are donated by the community. This year's car was donated by Laura Meads and Dale Guttman, and this is their second time donating.
