This has been a particularly drier season than normal and with that comes some concern for forest fires in parks.

Just this past week, Riding Mountain National Park had a high fire risk rating.

RMNP Acting Fire Management Officer, Reade Tereck talks about the most notable forest fire in the park’s history

“The 1980 fire was on May of 1980 and its origin is unknown as to what started it,” explained Tereck. “It is presumed it was lightning, but it started at the far south end of the park and burned for most of the month of May and was eventually put out by weather. It eventually did rain.”

The two factors that cause wildfires in parks are lightning and human error.
