Students at schools in Gilbert Plains can learn about internet safety today.
The event titled Tech Talk: Using Social Media Safely will be hosted by independent consultant Val Caldwell at both Gilbert Plains Elementary and Gilbert Plains Collegiate Institute about the risks associated with social media and the internet.
For Caldwell, parents should be calm in discussing the risk associated with the internet and social media to their children.
"The reactive parenting style certainly doesn't work and we need parents to be just more proactive with it... I know a lot of times it's fear based, we don't understand -- you know we get overwhelmed with Instagram and Snapchat -- so sometimes the tendency from fear is to just become aggressive and take things away."
Caldwell also says her initiative about internet safety began roughly a decade ago.
