Dauphin-Swan River-Neepawa MP Robert Sopuck says Mexico, not Canada, is Donald Trump's main concern when it comes to renegotiating or terminating NAFTA.
But a memo from Trump's transition team obtained by CNN recently suggests president-elect Trump may have his eye on changing NAFTA right from the start of his presidency, and it may have consequences for Canada's lumber and livestock industries.
Robert Sopuck says he does think agreements in those industries are at risk.
"The softwood lumber thing is potentially far more serious -- not so much for Manitoba because we don't have a lot of softwood lumber produced, but this does not minimize the effect on companies like Spruce Products, for example -- but you take softwood lumber in BC, there are hundreds of mills and Quebec's the same. The beef thing, country of origin labeling did not help us at all."
Sopuck says while COOL isn't good by any means, he thinks beef producers will do reasonably well. And he says Canada has a lot of friends in the US when it comes to that issue.
Last week, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said Canada is willing to discuss NAFTA with the United States.
Sopuck says that's not strong negotiating tactics and the Prime Minister showed his cards before the game even began.
