At this point, it's unknown if and when a replacement correctional centre will be built in Dauphin.
Minister of justice Heather Stefanson says the new jail -- first put into motion under the previous government -- is progressing through the design stage, but, along with other capital projects, it remains under a "value-for-money review."
She says there's no question there is a significant issue in our justice system, and the government needs to work with stakeholders to create more efficiencies within the system.
"That's why we're meeting with stakeholders, we're touring the facilities, we're talking to front-line workers, so together we can work towards creating a justice system that's again more efficient and effective, in order to ensure our communities are safer for all Manitobans."
MGEU president Michelle Gawronsky is calling for a replacement jail now, saying Dauphin's current correctional centre is over capacity, posing a safety risk for workers and inmates.
Stefanson says it's not just jails causing problems, it's court backlogs and various components throughout the justice system that need to be more efficient.
