The Dauphin Kings pushed late, but they couldn’t find the equalizier in a 4-2 loss against Waywayseecappo tonight.

The fourth goal was an empty net marker.

After a scoreless opening 20, the Wolverines got on the board nearly midway into the second. That’s when Anthony Bilka scored his first of the season 8:28 in.

The Kings shortly after found themselves on the penalty kill. That was okay for them as Avery Smith showed off his speed. He beat the Wolverines defender to the puck and tucked it past Thomson Phinney. The goal to tie it at the 16:36 mark wasn’t the final of the period.

Just more than 30 seconds later, Matthew Kasowski made it 2-1 on the power play to give Wayway a 2-1 lead after 40.

In the third, Austin Cardinal struck early to give Wayway a 3-1 lead.

Trailing by two, the Kings pushed things offensively. On a big shot from the point, Cole Dekoninck scored his first of the season on the power play at the 5:13 mark.

With just a few minutes left, Grady Hobbs put one past Phinney but it was waved off as the net came off. Phinney later robbed Cole Dekoninck on a back door chance.

Matthew Swanson scored his first of the season with 56 seconds left to give Wayway the win.

They’re now 3-0 while Dauphin dropped to 1-2.

The Kings return to action on Monday when they play Swan Valley at the Showcase in Winnipeg.

Since the day he started playing AAA hockey, Dauphin's Kevin Chrisp has been with the Parkland Rangers program. It started in the 2015-16 season with the Bantam team. Four years later, Kevin is set to begin his final season with the U18 team this weekend when the club welcomes the Winnipeg Thrashers in their home opener.

The Chrisp's have certainly made their mark felt on the program. Kevin's brother, Darrin played 75 games with the U18 team. Kevin has played 80 so far with the U18 team and he suited up in 36 games with the Bantams. With 48 regular-season games ahead, Kevin will hit the century mark near the mid-point of the season.

"I'm really looking forward to the opening game. Playing with the Rangers' is just a great environment," said Chrisp. "It's a bunch of guys that just love playing hockey. It's good vibes all around."

Kevin had six points (2G) last year as he played in all but one game for the team. Being a 17-year-old and three-year veteran of the league, the Dauphinite is looking for more improved personal success.

"Yeah, definitely. I want to double or triple my points from last year," he added.

The team in general will also be looking for an improved performance. They finished at the bottom of the standings last year with 18 points. Ahead of two home games to open their season, Chrisp has a good feeling that the team will change things around.

"There's a lot of young guys but we have a ton of skill here," he added. "We just have to get used to the speed and I don't think we'll have an issue competing with the top teams and guys."

Friday's game is set for 7:30 against the Winnipeg Thrashers at Credit Union Place. That game will be Kevin's last home opener as a part of the Rangers' program.

"I think I'll be a little emotional just knowing it's my last first here," he said.

On Saturday, the club will welcome the Interlake Lightning to town to wrap up their "Opening Weekend". That game is also set for 7:30.

Andrew Harris missed two straight games against Saskatchewan. When he came back to play against the Montreal Alouettes, he sure didn't look out of sort.

The Winnipeg native has been named one of the CFL's Top Performers for Week 15.

Despite the team's horrific loss, Harris still racked up 188 yards from scrimmage. He ran the ball 12 times for 76 yards. Through the air, he picked up 112 yards. It was his fifth career game with 100+ receiving yards and his second as a Blue Bomber.

74 of his 112 yards through the air came on a trick play when he earned a 74-yard reception from on a pass from Darvin Adams.

Harris continues to lead the league with 984 rushing yards, while also tallying 449 receiving yards. This is his third weekly honour after having previously been recognized in Weeks 1 and 5.

The Parkland Bantam Women's Rangers kicked off their season over the weekend and it looks like a solid season is ahead.

In their four games, the team went 3-1. Two of their wins came against Interlake when they shut them out twice, 2-0.

Their biggest win came against the Yellowhead Chiefs when they took them down 3-2. Their one defeat was against Westman, 3-1.

Coaches Phil Fafard, Cary Fillion, and Craig Zamzow teamed up to say this after the weekend.

"We're very impressed with the girl's team speed, defensive play, goaltending, and our overall effort through the four games," they said.

The team will take part in their first Showcase from October 4-6 in Winnipeg.

After a tremendous weekend, Dauphin Kings Nakodan Greyeyes has been named the second star in last week’s MJHL Top 3.

After scoring just eight goals last year, Nakodan already has three and it took him just two games to do it.

He also had one assist for a four-point performance in two games.

The third star of the week is Swan Valley’s Josh Maucieri.

The first star is Waywayseecappo’s Thomas Phinney.

The Prince Albert Raiders opened their season this past weekend against the Saskatoon Blades. A player that they're welcoming back is Roblin's Jakob Brook. However, Jakob didn't play over the weekend as he continues to rehab from an injury he sustained earlier this summer.

When trying out for the U18 Team Canada roster, Jakob tweaked something and that was enough to keep him out of "Opening Weekend" across the WHL. That injury also prevented Jakob from taking part in the Hlinka Gretzky Cup for Team Canada.

"I feel like I'm getting pretty close to where I want to be," said Brook. "I'm getting on the ice more everyday and I'm working hard to get ready. I'm hoping to be back as soon as possible."

"It was a pretty big downer when I got injured and I was trying to make Team Canada, it sucked," said Brook. "With that being said, it's just a little bump in the road for what my expectations are for this season."

The Roblin native played in 61 regular-season games last year with Prince Albert and he had 12 points (6G). He had another two assists in 23 playoff games as the team won the league title.

Brook expects to be in the lineup with the next couple of weeks. After being a rookie last year, Jakob is ready to be in the spotlight on a personal level more often.

"I'll be playing in a bigger role and I'll be playing more minutes and that sort of thing," he added. "I want to be a go to guy on this team. I'll do whatever I have to so I can be."

This year is one of Jakob's biggest in his young hockey career to date. That's because he's eligible to be picked in the 2020 NHL Entry Draft. His brother Josh is currently in the Montreal Canadiens organization and Jakob wants to have a great season so he gets picked early in June.

"That's kind of in the back of my mind but I can't let it consume me," he added. "I have to show scouts what I can offer to their organization. It's all about playing my game and not changing how I play."

"My goal is to up my points and I believe I have to because it's a very important year for me," Brook said.

After experiencing what it took to win a championship last year, Brook will have some confidence when he hits the ice.

"We're champions. I think I need to have that kind of swagger, but not the cockiness that it affects how I play," concluded Brook. "Going through that experience last year and having that playoff experience, I think that's really going to help me going into my sophmore season."

The best U19 rugby players in both Manitoba and Saskatchewan will be coming to Dauphin next month.

The Parkland Rugby Association will be hosting the Manitoba/Saskatchewan Championships. Along the Parkland teams, clubs from Minnedosa, Interlake will join several other teams from around the province.

Several teams also from Saskatchewan will be taking part n the event. It's both girls and guys. There will be both U11 and U13 divisions. There will also be U15, U17, and U19 boys and girls divisions. Roughly 25 teams will be taking part in the event.

"We're really excited about this. We've worked really hard to develop rugby in the area," said Rod Carberry. "One of the stipulations for hosting this event is you need more than one schedule and we're currently getting a second one ready. We did a rough schedule and it shows about a 64-game schedule over two fields. It's going to be a fantastic event and we're really excited to host it and get another field as well."

Within the past few years, rugby has taken a definite step up in the Parkland. Both the Parkland Pirates program and the Dauphin Clippers program has done well locally and on a provincial level. With the best of the best set to embark on Dauphin, Carberry is confident the team can have success.

"Our teams should have good success. We have some really good athletes. Our girls 7's program for the Clippers is the strongest it's ever been. For the first time ever, we'll have a junior varsity and varsity team," continued Carberry. "Our teams have done well in these types of events before and we expect the same come next month."

The schedule has yet to be released, but when it is we'll have you covered. If you've never had the chance to watch a game of rugby before, Carberry is inviting everyone down to the field.

"It's such a fast paced game. It's sort of like a 4-on-4 hockey game, things happen quick and anything can happen," Carberry concluded. "If you're unsure about the game, it's a great idea to come down to the games and see for yourself, I think you'll highly enjoy it."

The event takes place on October 12-13.

It was a solid weekend of volleyball for both the Dauphin Clippers varsity girls and boys teams.

In Brandon, the varsity boys finished fourth in a tournament that featured 24 teams.

In the playoffs, the team beat Carnduff, 25-27, 25-22, 15-8 to advance to the semifinals. They next came up just short against Major Pratt, 21-25, 24-26.

In the third place match, the team lost in straight sets to Fort Richmond to finish in fourth.

JJ Love was named a tournament all-star.

Varsity girls:

The team also finished in fourth at the Sanford tournament. In their first game, they beat the host Sanford team, 25-23, 26-24.

They overall ended up finishing tops in their pool.

In the semifinals, they lost to Calvin Christian and that was followed by a tight loss in the bronze medal game against Sanford.

The Parkland Bantam Rangers wrapped up their Souris tournament earlier today with another close defeat.

In a game against Eastman, the Rangers were down 4-1 before they battled back, but they ended up falling 5-4.

“It was our best game of the weekend,” said coach Tom White.

Will Munro, Skyler Carriere, Kyan Grouette, and Carter Zalischuk scored for Parkland in the game.

Parkland outshot Eastman, 42-18.

Kyler Swanton and Murray Cook played in net.

Luka Burzan notched two goals and the Brandon Wheat Kings won their first game of the 2019-20 season on Saturday night against the Winnipeg ICE.

One night after they went down 3-0 in a 3-2 loss, Brandon started things differently on Saturday.

It took Ben McCartney just 3:31 to light the lamp in front of a jam packed crowd at the Wayne Fleming Arena as Brandon went up 1-0.

Braden Schneider and Chad Nychuk got the assists.

The Winnipeg ICE didn’t seem phased one bit, however. They scored two straight goals to end the first.

At the 6:22 mark, Michal Teply continued his solid start to the season as he tied things up. It was his second of the season on the power play. Brad Ginnell and Marco Creta had the two assists.

After an assist, Brad Ginnell kept it going. He scored his first of the season as Creta earned his second assist and Connor McClennon got his first.

Teply’s first goal was at the 6:22 mark and Ginnell’s was at the 9:56 mark. Despite holding a 2-1 lead after 20, Winnipeg couldn’t keep it going after that.

Burzan scored his first goal of the game just 49 seconds into the second to tie it up.

The Burzan show continued shortly after. He scored the game-winning goal on the power play at the 4:33 mark. Ben McCartney added the lone assist.

With a 3-2 lead going into the third, Brandon finished things off in the final frame.

Jonny Hooker set up Lynden McCallum who scored the insurance marker with 2:54 left in the third.

The Brandon win evens up the “Manitoba Battle” at one. Eight more meetings are ahead.

The next one is set for Monday, November 11 at 2:30 at Westoba Place.

Winnipeg heads to Saskatoon, Prince Albert, and Regina for a three-in-three next weekend.

Brandon, meanwhile, has a home-and-home with Moose Jaw. Friday’s game is at Westoba Place at 7:30 p.m.

Baron Thompson and Brendan Arnold scored two goals each as the Dauphin Kings erupted offensively in their first win of the season.

In the back end of a home-and-home against Swan Valley, Dauphin put up six goals in a 6-4 win.

Unlike Friday night, the Stamps opened the scoring when Nathan Carl scored 11:50 into the first.

From there, Dauphin caught fire. Just 4:59 later, Baron Thompson scored his first MJHL regular season goal to tie it up as the game was tied after 20.

In the second, Dauphin was great on the powerplay. Carter Sawchuk scored early and Thompson scored his second of the game, late in the frame to give them a 3-1 lead after 40.

The third brought more goals for Dauphin. Within the first 10:18 of the period, Nakodan Greyeyes and Brendan Arnold made it 5-1.

Tommy Cardinal scored his first of the game while Carl added his second on the powerplay after that to trim the deficit to 5-3.

Already leading by two, Arnold added an empty netter late to solidify a 6-4 win for Dauphin.

They’re back at it on Tuesday in Waywayseecappo.
