The OCN Blizzard have made a coaching change.

Matt Summers has been relieved of his coaching duties.

Jamie Corbett has been named the team’s Interim Head Coach. Most recently, Corbett was the Head Coach of the Interlake Midget AAA Lightning.

Tristin Langan has played with his hometown Swan Valley Stampeders, he's played with the Parkland Midget Rangers and now he's doing special things with the Moose Jaw Warriors'.

In his three previous seasons with the Warriors', Langan played 174 games and racked up 71 points (25G) and he was a +50 combined. This year, Tristin has completely gone off. In 44 games, the 20-year-old has racked up a team-leading 76 points (37G).

The 76 points are 15 more than Justin Almeida who has 61 points and is second place on the team. Tristan's also already a +25.

"It's been a pretty good season so far for sure," said Langan. "Our teams playing really well, especially coming into the season missing some guys. Our lines are really clicking and hopefully, we can keep that going."

"I think I just got older and I have a ton more experience under my belt," he added. "I worked really hard during the summer. I just wanted to come into the season and have some fun and work really hard and it's paid off so far."

Not only is Tristin leading his Moose Jaw Warriors in scoring, but he's also near the top in the entire league. The 76 points are tied for second behind Portland Winterhawks, Joachim Blichfeld. His 37 goals are second in the league, five behind Blichfeld. Just to put things into perspective, Brett Leason is tied for third with 31 goals scored and he played for Team Canada at the World Junior Hockey Championships.

Langan also has an astonishing eight game-winning goals this season. That's tied for top spot with Leason and he's scored first in a game seven times which is second in the league. All in all, the numbers Tristin is putting up in his final junior hockey season are nothing short of incredible.

"It's obviously a lot of fun when you're putting up points as I have been," said Langan. "We have such a great group of guys here and everyone gets along so well. I've loved every minute here with the Warriors'."

With all of the production, Tristin has provided the Warriors' this season; it wouldn't be surprising if scouts at the next level are taking an extra good look at Langan. I mean, after all, this is his final junior hockey season and he hopes his hockey career continues going forward.

Tristin went undrafted in the NHL Entry Draft. Going back, if scouts knew he could do what he's doing now, there is no doubt that he would have been drafted.

"I'm not trying to worry about the future but I think it's always something that's in the back of my mind," he added. "I just want to keep this going and I want to prove that I can make great things happen."

Langan celebrated his 20th birthday on October 15. December 15, 2018, may go down as his favourite memory in his junior hockey career. Playing in the "Teddy Bear Toss" game at Mosaic Place against the Regina Pats, Langan and the Warriors' went down 1-0 just 56 seconds into the game. 14 seconds later, Langan potted home his 22nd of the season to become Moose Jaw's Teddy Bear Man of 2018. He also went on to score two more goals in the game for a hat-trick and he added one assist as well. Moose Jaw went on to win that game 6-3.

"That was definitely a pretty special feeling," he added. "It was a great game and I'm glad I was able to help the team win games."

One of the goals was the game-winning marker, one of Tristan's eight this season.

The Warriors' in general have been having a pretty solid season as well. They're 25-11-6-2 which is good for third in the East division and it has them just four points behind the second place Saskatoon Blades. Langan and the team are in Edmonton as they prepare to play the Oil Kings tomorrow and Medicine Hat on Saturday to wrap up a lengthy road-trip.

Going into the season, Moose Jaw was expected to struggle heavily after graduating some of their top players from an extremely strong team last year. Those struggles just have simply not happened.

"Everyone counted us out and we knew that so we've been working really hard to prove some people wrong," added Langan. "Hopefully we can catch Saskatoon and have a good playoff push here."

You can catch Tristin and the Warriors' in Brandon on March 13.

The Dean Cooley GM Peewee A1 Kings are heading to the Provincial Championships.

Playing in a best of three against Swan River for the spot, the A1 Kings swept the series by winning tonight, 6-5.

It was a complete team effort as six different skaters scored for the A1 Kings.

William Miner, Jayton Kabel, Jesse Hockridge, Shonie Caplan, Norman John Lacquette, and Sully Fox all potted one each.

Dauphin won the first game of the series 8-1 on Saturday.

The A1 Provincial Championships are in Altona from March 1-3.

Ethan Slobodzian earned his first shutout with the Dauphin Kings and the club picked up a hard-fought 3-0 win tonight against the OCN Blizzard at Credit Union Place.

Early on, it was a pretty even game as the shots were tied at four. That's when the Kings turned it on as they recorded 13 of the games next 16 shots. One of them went in when Leeam Tivers picked up a rebound off a shot from Dauphin's Andrew Liwiski and he did the rest to put Dauphin up 1-0.

It stayed that way and it looked like Dauphin would still be up 1-0 after 40 minutes of play but they wanted more. As the time expired in the second period, Ian Tookenay somehow got a puck past Dorian Laganiere on a play that started out in the neutral zone with just eight seconds left.

After a slow start to the third, the Blizzard turned it on and got a couple glorious chances including a breakaway, but Slobodzian was top notch in turning away every chance OCN generated. With just 22 seconds left, Eamonn Miller iced the contest with his eighth of the season. Cole DeKoninck and Riley Buller notched the assists on the game clincher.

Slobodzian ended up making 26 saves. The shutout was also his first ever Jr. A shutout.

"It's definitely a pretty great feeling, the guys played great in front of me and it feels really nice," said Slobodzian.

It was a massive rebound game for Ethan who was pulled in his last two games, one of which was against the Blizzard.

"It was big for me to rebound tonight. I felt like I let the team down the last couple of games," he added. "It was nice for the boys to come out hot tonight and I really think I controlled the shots I faced. This win really boosts my confidence."

With the win, Dauphin is now 22-19-2-2 for 48 points. That has them just five points behind the Selkirk Steelers and Virden Oil Capitals.

Dauphin now begins a home and home with the Portage Terriers on Friday night at Stride Place. The Parkland Source for Sports pregame show with Darnell Duff begins at 7:15.

Dauphin's Stacy Sime had one chance to make a solid first impression this morning in Gimli. She's joining team Lisa Hale at the Manitoba Scotties Tournament of Hearts and it was a big day for the 20-year-old. She made her debut in this morning's game as she replaced Lisa Bartley who will miss the first few games of the tournament.

"I was so excited to be given the chance to play," said Sime. "I was super nervous but I was so excited to play."

The lights were bright and the pressure was at an extreme high, but that wasn't a problem for Sime and the rest of the foursome. Things couldn't have gone much better as the team got hot late and scored eight points in a two-end span en-route to an 11-6 win over team Spencer.

"It felt really awesome to win that game in my debut," said Sime. "I thought we all played pretty good. It went really well."

"I was playing lead instead of skip so that was a weird change but I enjoyed it," she added. "I think I played pretty well out there."

Sime, Hale and the rest of the foursome will now get a few hours off before taking to the ice again at 4:00 p.m. against team Peterson who also won their first game.

"I think we're feeling pretty good going forward," she added. "We've never curled together before but I think I'm fitting in pretty nicely."

"There's still going to be pressure on me out there," added Sime. "I feel pressure on myself before every game. I do feel better now though based on how things went this morning."

You can find out the team's full schedule over at Team Hale's Schedule.

Only one junior women's curling team in Manitoba can call themselves Provincial Champions. Only eight junior women's curling teams in Canada can say they advanced to the Championship bracket at the New Holland Canadian Junior Championships. Dauphin's Lauryn Kuzyk and her curling team can say they've achieved both of those.

The foursome finished 5-1 in round-robin play which wrapped up yesterday and that record has them atop Pool B.

"It feels pretty good for sure," said Kuzyk. "Entering the Championship round means it's only going to get harder from here. We're excited about the challenge and we're definitely ready to get going."

"It's honestly an honour to get the chance to play against the best teams in Canada," she added.

For the first time this tournament, Kuzyk and the foursome will be looking to rebound from a loss. They fell to New Brunswick last night, 6-5.

"I think that loss kind of put us in our place," she added. "Obviously losing is never fun, but I think it helped us put everything into perspective. These teams are really good."

Manitoba will now play four more games as they vie for a berth in the semifinals. Game #1 is this afternoon at 2:00 p.m. against BC. Manitoba has given BC problems already this season. They haven't played in this tournament, but back in October, Kuzyk, Caitlyn Labossiere, Emily Zacharias, and Mackenzie Zacharias beat the BC rink twice at the Ottawa Superspiel.

"We're all pretty excited to play against BC once again, we know how they play," said Kuzyk. "It should be fun."

This is the rest of their schedule:

Thursday, January 23 - 2:00 p.m. vs Alberta (only undefeated team in the tournament) & 7:00 p.m. vs Nova Scotia (4-2).

Friday, January 24 - 9:00 a.m. vs Northern Ontario (3-3). The top team in the Championship bracket after the four games will earn a bye to the final. The second and third place teams will play in the semifinals.

The Goose Lake Angels High School varsity girls basketball team have been good this year, and they've been recognized for all of their success.

To kick off the season, the Angels won their home tournament by beating Gilbert Plains and Dauphin. Next up was a tough test for the team as they played in the Elmwood AAAA varsity tournament in Winnipeg. Why would it be a tough test? Because Roblin is a AA school.

The Angels said that's no problem and cruised through the tournament. They started with a 20 point win against the Transcona Titans and followed that up with a 12 point win against Tec Voc. In the finals, the Angels beat the St. John's Tigers by 18 to win their second title in as many weeks.

Next up was the Christmas break for the squad. On January 11-12, the Angels hit the road again as they played in the Neepawa tournament. After rolling in their first two games, Roblin suffered their first loss of the season and it was a heartbreaker. They lost 55-53 to Swan River in the Championship game.

With two of their starters sitting out the next week, the Angels lost their first two games at the Vincent Massey tournament but rebounded by beating Sagkeeng in a big way.

Add it all up and the Angels are 8-3 so far this season.

"The girls have definitely had a great start to the season," said Brant Neufeld, Head Coach.

Thanks to all of their success, the Angels are ranked as the second-best AA team in the province.

"Rankings don't mean a whole lot at this time of the year," said Neufeld. "But, it for sure gives us some confidence. We know what we can do out there and we're in a good spot right now."

"We have high expectations for our team," he added.

The Angels won't play again until February but it's going to be a very busy month. On February 1-2 they're in Portage. The next weekend they head to Gilbert Plains before making the trip to Major Pratt on February 15-16. The AA Zone 8 Championships are on February 20 and Goose Lake hosts their own tournament on February 22-23.

The AA Provincial Championships qualifiers are on March 2 and the provincials are March 14-16.

It's the biggest event of the season so far for Dauphin's Lisa Hale and her foursome. They're off to Gimli for the 2019 Manitoba Scotties Tournament of Hearts Provincial Curling Championships.

Hale, Ashley Surminski, Laurie Macdonnell, Lisa Bartley, and Stacy Sime will play in the Asham Group. It all kicks off tomorrow morning at 8:30.

Here is the team's full schedule:

Wednesday, January 23 - 8:30 a.m. vs Team Spencer and 4:00 p.m. vs Team Peterson.

Thursday, January 24 - 8:30 a.m. vs Team Einarson and 4:00 p.m. vs Team Flaxey.

Friday, January 25 - 12:15 p.m. vs Team Lamb and 7:45 p.m. vs Team Ackland.

Saturday, January 26 - 12:15 p.m. vs Team Brown.

The top two teams from each pool advance to the Page Playoff which takes place on January 26 with the 3/4 game at 7:45 p.m. The semifinals and Championship final are set for Saturday, January 27 and they will be broadcasted live on Sportsnet.

Keep it locked here to 730CKDM all week-long to see how the foursome fair.

Justin Valentino's road to becoming an elite hockey player began in the 2009-10 season with the Norman Northstars Midget AAA team. He played two full seasons with that team and had 110 points in 97 games. His next step was joining the Swan Valley Stampeders.

That's where Justin played 2.5 seasons. He made the playoffs with the Stamps in each of his seasons there and even made the post-season when he was called up during his last Midget season. In all, Valentino played 169 games with Swan Valley and he recorded 143 points.

Midway through the 2013-14 season, Justin was traded but he didn't have to go far. He was picked up by a stacked Dauphin Kings' team. He ended up playing 43 games through the MJHL playoffs with Dauphin and he had 26 points.

That was also the year that Dauphin played in the Western Canada Cup and of course the Royal Bank Cup in Vernon, BC. On home ice in the WCC, Justin and the team beat Spruce Grove, 4-3 to earn the final berth to the big dance in Vernon. Justin and the Kings' came up short as they lost 5-3 to the Carleton Place Canadians in the semi-final.

Valentino's successful junior hockey career came to an end after that loss to CP, and it was a loss that he still thinks about more than five years later.

"It was honestly such a fantastic year to be able to live out that experience," said Valentino. "Losing in the league final was tough to swallow, but playing in the WCC as the host team was incredible. We once again came up short against Yorkton which was tough as well, but we bounced back against Spruce Grove."

"Advancing to the National Championships meant we were still playing hockey in May and that was pretty incredible," he added. "They hosted a first-class event. We obviously didn't get the result we wanted out there but it was a well-rounded experience. I was very fortunate that I was given the opportunity to play for Dauphin and I'll always remember my time with the Kings'."

Just because his junior hockey days came to an end, that doesn't mean Justin's hockey career was over. Right after playing in Dauphin, the now 25-year-old committed to play for the University of Lethbridge Pronghorns men's hockey team. Justin was an instant everyday player for the Pronghorns as he suited up in all 28 of the team's games in his first season there.

"Going to university after taking a few years off to play junior hockey was definitely a tough transition," said Valentino. "It's never easy to balance school with competitive hockey and everything else that comes with it, but I made it happen and it's been great for me."

Four years later and Justin is now playing his final season of university hockey. He's played each and every game for the team since joining the roster five years ago. The playoff success he had been used to in previous years has not been the same in Lethbridge, however. The team hasn't qualified for Canada West playoff action in the past four seasons but that could change this season.

Heading into this weekend, Justin and the rest of the team are six points clear of the final playoff spot with 16 points. The top five teams in the conference have already locked up their playoff spot led by the Saskatchewan Huskies who are 19-3.

"We've been just a few points shy the past few seasons so it's been tough to swallow that pill," said Valentino. "We're pretty excited with the position we are in right now and we're looking forward to making a push and obviously qualifying for the playoffs. Every game is massive for us."

Speaking of massive, Justin had one of those nights not too long ago. On January 5, he scored twice and had two assists for his first ever four-point night in a big 6-1 win against the Regina Cougars. Justin has 23 points this year in 22 games.

"That was a really huge weekend for us as a team because Regina was chasing us and it was really big for us to get two wins," said Valentino. "We were able to create some space. All of our lines were just clicking and I couldn't have done it without my linemates, they're great. It was pretty special that I was able to share it with them."

Justin is now coming back to Manitoba this weekend. He and the Pronghorns will play two critical games against the Manitoba Bisons. The Bisons are six points behind Lethbridge for that final playoff spot so a couple wins this weekend could lock up that playoff berth for the 25-year-old and the rest of the team.

Ironically enough, Justin was able to play in the National Championships in his final year of junior hockey and now he will get that same chance in his final year of university hockey. The Pronghorns will host the USports National Championships from March 14-17.

"It's not too often that you get to play in two National Championships in your career, so it's really exciting," said Valentino. "We have some guys that have played in the RBC Cup before so we will have some experience going in."

"With the one-game elimination format, you have to be playing your best hockey," he added. "It's all or nothing and we're definitely pumped up to host this event and we want to make something special happen in front of our own fans."

Dauphin's Stanley Cup Champion, Barry Trotz is on his way back to Dauphin!

The now New York Islander will be a part of Dauphin Kings Ukrainian Night on Saturday night at Credit Union Place. He will drop the puck as a part of the opening ceremonies.

Barry was here in August 2018 where the community came out in droves to support the Stanley Cup Champion. Now, he's led the New York Islanders to a fantastic season as they're 29-15-4 and they are 8-2 in their last 10 games. That includes being winners of five straight.

Tickets for the game are on sale now and are going fast. It's $7 for adults, $5 for students and $2 for kids 12 and under.

Head on down to Ruffs Furniture at 215 Buchanon Ave or give them a call at 638-6225 to get your tickets before they sell out.
