If you look up at the night sky this weekend you can catch the Eta Aquarid meteor shower.

Visible until Monday, this shower can produce around 10-30 meteors per hour with the peak period to view this shower tomorrow.

If you are able to see them in the sky, they will move past going around 30 to 70 km per second.

This year’s Boxes of Love collection drive was a success, but they are still looking for donations.

Volunteer for Boxes of Love, Nicole Yunker, tells 730 CKDM what they are still looking for.

“We are short 20 pairs of running shoes. They need to be brand new. We did collect 80 pairs and we are thrilled. We have 20 pairs to go; if anybody has any to drop off they can be dropped off at Parkland Crossing Monday to Friday 9-4. If anyone has any questions give me a call at (204) – 638-4477.”

They are also hoping to find a hotel that will donate their small conditioner and lotions bottles.

With the very dry conditions in the Parkland, precautionary measures are being declared to avoid future problems.

Starting immediately the Municipality of Ethelbert has issued a burn ban.

Dauphin is set to welcome 15 students from a school in New Brunswick in a couple of weeks.

This is part of the DRCSS’ Aboriginal Student Exchange Program.

Wade Houle, teacher at the DRCSS, notes when the students arrive.

“We’ll have 15 students from Rexton coming here and they will match up with our 15 students. They arrive Friday, May 18, pretty late, so they’ll come to the DRCSS in the evening and our families will meet them and take them home.  The following Saturday, we have activities planned all the way up to the following Thursday, which I believe is May 24.  Then they’ll head out to Winnipeg and fly out early in the morning on Friday, May 25.”

Local activities are planned out for the week for the students to participate in.

Between today and next Friday Parks Canada is planning a prescribed fire from Lake Audy to Whitewater Lake in Riding Mountain National Park.

This prescribed burn is being conducted in order to improve the ecological condition of fire-dependent forest and grassland communities and to reduce the risk of a severe fire occurring in the park.

The entire burn area, including the Long Lake Trail, Grasshopper Trail and portions of the Central Trail, may be closed periodically to the public during the burn.

Long Lake, Minnedosa River, and Whitewater Lake campsites will also be closed.

There will also be temporary road closures on Lake Audy Road.

These closures will be lifted as soon as it is safe to do so to minimize the disruption to park visitors.

There are reports of a grass fire east of Dauphin on highway 20 past Road 108.

Emergency crews are responding.

There are also reports of a grass fire around Sifton.

Sifton Fire Department has asked the Dauphin Fire Department for assistance.

McHappy Day at Dauphin’s local McDonald’s was a big success.

Brady Johnson, the owner of the restaurant, is excited about how well they did this year.

“It went incredible. It was our best results ever. Busiest Day in the store and best fundraising we’ve had as well."

In total 10,400 dollars was raised in Dauphin and will be split between the Ronald McDonald House in Winnipeg and Dauphin Minor Baseball.

The City of Dauphin has hired a new By-Law Enforcement Officer.

Colin Lesiuk, started working for the City of Dauphin on April 3.

He’s currently working on derelict properties and overall cleanliness of the city.

“For the most part, right now, I’m tackling cleanliness issues. For commercial and residential spaces, as soon as the snow is gone there’s a lot of garbage around.  Businesses are starting to start their summer projects, so I’m working on business licences.  Pretty soon we’re starting on our Property Task Force Committee and we work together too with residents and business owners to help clean up their properties finish their renovations and stuff like that’s been outstanding for three or four years, maybe longer.”

If you have any questions about a by-law or any concerns in regards to a violation, you can contact him at 622-3225.

The Sifton and Dauphin Fire Department were dispatched to a fire involving grass, brush and several structures two miles south of Sifton this morning at around 2:30.

A barn and at least five other small outbuildings were lost, and the fire covered approximately 20 acres of grass, field, and brush.

The fire was lit in the ditch north of the property along Road 160N, and it spread rapidly to the yard side and buildings involved.

The owner had some agricultural equipment in some of the outbuildings, which was lost to the fire.

Crews from both departments remained on scene until shortly after 6:00 a.m. to ensure there was no risk of reignition.

If anyone has any information related to the incident, please call the RCMP-Dauphin Detachment.

Next Tuesday, Dauphin residents are able to find out how the city is operating.

The Annual State of the City Address features presentations by the mayor, city administration, as well as the chamber of commerce.

Chamber Executive Director, Stephen Chychota, tells 730 what those attending should expect for this year’s address.

“We’re looking at a fun, interactive session with Mayor Allan Dowhan. He’s going to be giving us some insight into what happened the last few months and what Dauphin has going on in the future.”

Tickets are on sale until tomorrow and can be purchased by contacting the chamber office or by going to their website.

The RM of Dauphin is performing seasonal maintenance on their Phase 1 Rural Water Line.

Taking place this month crews are flushing lines and exercising valves among other tasks.

Chief Administrative Officer Robin Wiebe wants to make sure those using the line are aware of the work being done.

“Because the line is quite new our residents might not be aware that regular maintenance is required. It’s good practice, and just simply there is not a problem with the line, people may be concerned with water supply, it might be gurgling in their tap, or that kind of thing.”

It’s expected to take till the end of the month to complete all the maintenance.

If you have long disruptions such as air bubbles or reduced water pressure that does not rectify itself the same day you are asked to call the RM office.
