Today is the open house for the Net Zero energy home starting at 10 in the morning. 

The address of the home is 135 Edgar Avenue.

At the open house, you can get a good look at the energy efficient home from the inside and out.

Steven Sobering, community energy manager for Dauphin, says the Net Zero House has a lot of exciting features.

“This home is designed so that over its lifetime, there are zero energy bills. So basically, what little energy the home uses will be generated by the solar PV that’s on the roof and that’s a huge feature. The home is very well designed, so every aspect of the build was scrutinized because we needed to achieve a high-performance build.

The ACC played a large role in the project with carpentry students building the house at the Dauphin Co-op Building Centre’s ready-to-move site.

Once moved to its final address, local contractors completed the work.

The cost to build the house is about 40 or 50 thousand dollars more than a normal house.

The house will go on the market tomorrow with a price of 350 thousand dollars.

Sobering says if you took the energy savings from the home and applied it to the mortgage you would save 38 thousand dollars in interest and pay off the home 4 years sooner.

The Dauphin Kids of Mud program will have a barbeque all day at the open house until 6 pm.

Bryan Byers wins every time he sells a car, but that's not the only way he's a winner.

With help from Marketing Manager at Dean Cooley GM, Alyson Sametz, the duo won the rural Manitoba districts walk around contest on the redesigned GMC Sierra. Bryan and Alyson teamed up to beat every single GM dealership in our province. 

The video called "An Intimate Moment with GMC Sierra Denali" features some of the neat features that the vehicle offers.

"I sort of stole my inspiration from those late night 90's call in commercials," said Byers. "It's a little bit different compared to other walk around videos. We didn't take it too seriously, but we did have a lot of fun."

"Well it was pretty exciting when we found out we won this," said Sametz. "There was a little bit of editing that went into it so it was nice that the hard work paid off. Bryan's an excellent team member to be the star of our videos. It worked out quite well."

Bryan wasn't even sure if he was going to enter a video in the contest when he was first asked to. He ended up doing so and the rest is history.

"I didn't know if we were going to win or not," added Byers. "With that being said, I did think we had a little bit of a better chance because I felt our idea was unique enough and it turns out it was."

Early last week, the Taxation Special Investigations Unit division of Manitoba Finance executed a search warrant at a Brandon residence and seized 68,150 contraband cigarettes and $3,760 in cash.

A 37-year-old female was found to be in possession of illegal tobacco products that were not marked for Manitoba tax purposes. She now faces charges under The Manitoba Tobacco Tax Act, The Tax Administration, and Miscellaneous Taxes Act and The Criminal Code of Canada.

If the woman had sold the cigarettes, the province would have lost $20,104.25 in tax revenue. The woman, who is a first time offender, faces between $1,000 and $10,000 and/or up to six months in prison. If convicted, she would have to pay a triple tax penalty of $60,312.75.

Manitoba Hydro Contractors will be performing safety inspection surveys on natural gas lines in Dauphin and the surrounding area until Friday.

Pure HM is the company conducting the inspections in our area.

Residents may notice the contractors on or near private property.

All contractors carry approved ID and must clearly display it, they’ll also have Manitoba Hydro business cards explaining what they are doing.

The Public Utilities Board mandates yearly safety inspection surveys.

The contractors will walk along buried natural gas lines and check natural gas metres to make sure there aren’t any leaks.

If a leak is found, Manitoba Hydro will be made aware and will make repairs as soon as possible.

The Prairie View Municipality has put a burn ban into effect as of today.

All outdoor fires are banned with the exclusion of BBQs and designated campfire pits.

The burn ban will remain in effect until further notice.

If you’re walking through Vermillion Park towards the Sports Complex you might notice something a little different about the bridge.

It is now called the Eric Irwin Bridge after Dauphin’s late mayor.

City Manager Sharla Griffiths says that the bridge is named in Irwin’s honour because it was a project that he was passionate about and one that he championed. The process of naming the bridge was something that City Council voted on a while ago.

Griffiths stated that there weren’t any plans for a formal ceremony as of yet. There was a ceremony in Irwin’s honour at the unveiling of the cooperation statue in Vermillion Park

The RM of Mossey River has issued a burn ban effective immediately.

The RM asks people to refrain from open fires.

The Dauphin Fire Department had to fight smoke coming out of a house on Davidson Avenue E in Dauphin.

The fire department responded just before 12:40 along with the RCMP and an ambulance.

Upon arrival, firefighters were told by neighbours that there may be someone in the basement. 

Firefighters entered the home and located the fire in the basement, after an initial knockdown, they searched both the basement and the main floor but found no occupants.

The fire was brought under control quickly but crews remained on scene for approximately 2.5 hours to ensure there was no chance of re-ignition.

The cause of the fire is currently under investigation by the Manitoba Office of the Fire Commissioner with assistance from DFD and the RCMP. 

There are no estimates on damages at this time.

The Thompson RCMP are asking for help in locating a missing man.

RCMP are looking for 25-year-old Cody Kyle Merasty, who was last seen in Thompson on May 19, 2019.

Police are concerned for Cody’s well being and think he may be injured. He is described as being 5’10”, 190 lbs and was last seen wearing black pants and a white t-shirt.

There’s just a couple weeks left to get tickets for the 2019 Conservation Districts Tour.

Sean Goertzen, executive director for the Manitoba Conservation Districts Association, says they tour a district every year to showcase success stories.

This year’s Conservation Districts Tour is in the Whitemud Watershed District which is in the Neepawa area.

The tour will involve small bands, shelterbelts, waterway infrastructure work, and will cover most of the Whitemud Watershed District.

Goertzen says this is a chance to get on the landscape and see success stories and real physical projects.

It’ll be a way to see how sustainability is being improved.

The tour will be on June 26th from 10 til 4. You have to be registered by June 5th and it costs 5 dollars.

Early yesterday morning (May 20th) around 4:35 Portage RCMP responded to a shooting at a residence on 1st St. NW in Portage. 

A 22-year-old male had been shot inside the residence. 

He was taken to hospital with life threatening injuries. 

The RCMP are still investigating and haven’t announced any arrests related to the incident.
