Beginning today boat inspections for aquatic invasive species are going on.
The government of Manitoba has set up locations around the province to help boaters be in compliance with the law. Aquatic invasive species are a concern in the Parkland and the government is trying to stop the spread to local lakes. Candace Parks the aquatic species specialist with the province of Manitoba talks about why it is a good idea to stop by one of the inspection sites this weekend.
“Any water user, including watercraft craft, who remove their watercraft from the water must by law clean, drain, dry, and dispose of their bait. If people are coming out of provinciality designated control zones, for example, the Red River and Lake Winnipeg, by law they need to clean, drain, dry, plus decontaminate their watercraft before it goes into another water body. So essentially our program is on the landscape to help people to be aware of the steps they need to take and get them in compliance with the law."
Swan River, Ericksdale, and the Pas are some of the locations holding inspections from Thursday until Monday. To find the times go to gov.mb.ca/stopthespread.
