The Town of Swan River joins Dauphin as a community that has gained people over the last five years.

Mayor Glenn McKenzie says he's glad to see population's gone up by 104 since 2011, but they're not quite up to old standards.

"In 2001, our population was 4,032, now we're 4,014, so we really haven't even gone back to what the population was 15-16 years ago."

McKenzie says he thinks it ebbs and flows.

"Maybe with downturns in the agricultural industry, and the upturn probably to incentives for economic development: Louisiana Pacific, Spruce Products, other businesses in town -- small businesses hiring one or two people, those are all good kinds of things."

Swan River's population increased 2.7 per cent between 2011 and 2016, according to the census. Swan Valley West went down 3.2.
