Premier Brian Pallister says we can't ignore climate change, but he says Manitobans are taxed to the max already.
Within yesterday's throne speech, was mention of a made-in-Manitoba carbon pricing and climate change strategy. The federal government says it will impose a national levy for any province that doesn't have its own system in place by 2018.
The premier spoke to rural media by teleconference this afternoon. He says Manitobans don't want to pay more taxes while getting less for it, but climate change is an issue that is going to matter to all of us.
He says the impact of any additional tax burden imposed by the federal government has to be offset by revenues going back into building Manitoba.
"I'm very concerned that the federal government imposing this tax on our province not impact unduly on any sector of our economy because our economy needs to be rebuilt."
Pallister says agriculture is a key part of rebuilding Manitoba's economy.
