Firefighters across the province will be reminding residents the importance of fire safety through a provincial campaign.
Running from October 9th - 15th, Fire Prevention Week will be focusing on smoke alarms and knowing the age of them says Growth, Enterprise and Trade Minister Cliff Cullen who is responsible for the Office of the Fire Commissioner.
Cullen made the announcement yesterday saying, "We want people to understand that smoke alarms save lives and remind them the alarms have a lifespan of 10 years."
The Province of Manitoba says, according to the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), most homes have at least one working smoke alarm, but many people are unaware how old their smoke alarms are or how often they need to be replaced.
President of the Manitoba Association of Fire Chiefs and Dauphin Fire Chief, Cam Abrey says, "Smoke alarms need to be replaced at least every 10 years, but the public is generally unaware of this requirement."
This year's Fire Prevention Week campaign will also include safety tips such as installing smoke alarms on every level of the home and how to replace any alarm manufactured more than ten years ago.
