Lots of Snow Falling in Manitoba's North

Parts of the Prairies continue to be hit with a winter storm.

Snowfall warnings are in effect for some of northern Manitoba and parts of Saskatchewan.

The Flin Flon and Thompson areas are supposed to get more snow today, according to Environment Canada, with two-day accumulations ranging from 30-50 centimetres.

Environment Canada says the storm is weakening and heavy snow will taper off to light tonight.

Fixing Finances is Front-and-Centre for Fall Legislative Session Says Dauphin's MLA

MLAs are back at work in Winnipeg, with the fall legislative session starting this week.

Dauphin's MLA Brad Michaleski says right now the essence of what the government is doing has to do with fixing the province's finances.

"There's nothing flashy about this. We were given a mess, and ten years of debt and decline, and (we have) a pretty strong mandate from the province of Manitoba and our constituency to turn things around, and a lot of the stuff we're going to be working on is about turning that ship."

Recently released numbers showed Manitoba's deficit isn't as high the Progressive Conservatives had projected before the election. Finance Minister Cameron Friesen said late last month the deficit is at $846-million dollars -- less than the $1-billion the PCs expected but almost double what the NDP projected in its last budget.

Chili Cook-Off

Dauphin's firefighters are the chili champions of Dauphin.

Robbie Tomkins, Tyler Szabo, and Kevin Giesbrecht were handing out chili at the Dauphin Friendship Centre last night, among six other teams, as part of the Parkland Mental Health Promotion's seventh annual chili cook-off.

Tomkins made the chili and says he keeps it simple and packs the chili with lots of meat.

"You know what it is, really? It's a combination of sweetness and heat, but not overbearing heat or overbearing sweetness."

Second place went to Red Hot Chili Steppers and third was awarded to the Collaborative Cooks.
