Carson Cherepak returned between the pipes for the first time in nearly a month on Friday and was back to his old self.

The 19-year-old made 27 saves to record a shutout as Dauphin dominated OCN from start to finish in a 5-0 win.

It was Cherepak’s first game since January 7.

”No better way to return than that,” said Cherepak. “Team played great in front of me as well, it was a great team effort.”

Kaden Bryant’s stick remained red-hot for Dauphin as he scored his 24th and 25th goals of the season. Also scoring was Nolan Wickham, Nakodan Greyeyes and Owen Wareham also scored for Dauphin in the win.

“We’ve really come together in the past two games and found a way to get the job done,” said Cherepak

Dauphin has outscored their opponents, 8-0 over their past two games. The team is now 27-10-1 and they remain atop the West Division, one point ahead of Waywayseecappo.

Dauphin is back at it on Sunday as they head to OCN to play the Blizzard.

On a night where five to 10 centimetres of snow is expected to fall, the OCN Blizzard is in Dauphin to take on the Kings for the fifth time this season.

Dauphin is 3-1 this season with them winning the past three contests after dropping their opener against the Blizzard at the Roy. H. Johnston Arena. The Kings are coming off their best 60-minute performance of 2022 as they dispatched Swan Valley on Wednesday, 3-0. It was a game in which Dauphin allowed just 22 shots against and Nakodan Greyeyes found the back of the net twice. Logan Calder, who is starting to look more comfortable in a Kings jersey, scored his first with the team and 20th of the season.

Entering Friday's action, Dauphin has a one-point lead over Waywayseecappo for first place in the West Division, the Wolverines do have a game in hand. Dauphin has been dominant on home ice, winning 14 of their 18 games at Credit Union Place and they're a plus 34 on home ice. OCN; meanwhile, is 5-12-0-2 on the road this season and is a minus 50. OCN has just one win in 2022 and February is an extremely busy month for them as they play 12 times.

Friday's game is the first of four straight between the two teams, they will meet once again on Sunday at the Gordon Lathlin Memorial Centre.

Game notes:

  • Colby Jaquet leads the way with eight points against OCN this season while Ben Hackl has six and Jayden Jubenvill has five
  • For OCN; meanwhile, Riley Zimmerman has three against Dauphin
  • Dauphin is a league best 26.7% on the man advantage, OCN is down at 18.2%
  • To note, Dauphin still has three games to make up. One will be played on March 8 against the Virden Oil Capitals, two more are to be scheduled against the Winnipeg Freeze

The basketball season is well underway for the Dauphin Clippers varsity girls and they're ranked as one of the top teams in the province at the AAA level.

Off to a 5-2 start to their season, the Clippers are ranked fifth in the most recent rankings done by Manitoba High School Athletics Association (MHSAA). Steve Hudyma says the team has been working very hard and the ranking is well deserved.

"We're really pumped up that we're ranked that high," said Hudyma. "It just goes to show how hard the girls are working, they give everything they have every practice and every game."

After getting off to a slow start with two straight losses to begin their season, Dauphin has been unstoppable as they're currently riding a five-game winning streak heading into a big weekend. During their streak, the team has downed Grandview twice, Neelin once, Vincent Massey Brandon once and The Pas. Now the team is off to Winnipeg to play their biggest game of the season.

The team will take on the St. James Jimmies, a team that is the top-ranked team in the province. A tough challenge without a doubt, but it's one the Clippers are very excited about.

"They're a very similar team to ours, they're fast-paced and they like to press," offered Hudyma. "It's going to be an exciting game and we're looking forward to playing a team that is similar to us."

The team will also play Sanford and on their way back to town, they'll play a game in Ste. Rose against the Celtics.

The Parkland U15 Rangers are in a tie for fourth place after a solid performance on Wednesday night.

Playing in Shoal Lake, the club dominated from start to finish in a 5-1 win against Yellowhead.

Trace Langan and Luke Myhre both scored two goals apiece while Owen Sigvaldason also potted one. The team is now 15-8-3-1 and they're tied with the Bruins Gold with 36 points.

The Dauphin Kings are back in sole possession of the first place in the West Division.

A tremendous defensive effort paired with some timely goals and a shutout performance from Keaton Woolsey pushed Dauphin to a 3-0 win over Swan Valley.

After no goals were scored in the first, Nakodan Greyeyes found the back of the net twice in the second. That set the stage for Logan Calder, who scored his first goal as a King and 20th of the season late in the third period.

The win gives Dauphin their 26th win of the season and they’re now one point ahead of Waywayseecappo. They also move 13 points ahead of the Stampeders in the division. It was Woolsey’s second shutout of the season, he made 22 saves in the win.

It was Greyeyes’ first multi-goal game since returning to the team.

Next up for the team is a four-game set with OCN, starting Friday in Dauphin.

The Dauphin Kings make another trip up north on Wednesday as they continue their regular season with a game against the Swan Valley Stampeders.

The game kicks off an extremely busy February for the team as Dauphin hits the ice for 10 games this month and keep in mind, the team still has three games to makeup, two against the Winnipeg Freeze and one against the Virden Oil Capitals.

It's the second meeting of 2022 between the two clubs as Swan Valley downed Dauphin last month and January was a mixed bag for the Kings. They opened the month with two straight losses and ended the month with a loss. In between those three games, the Kings won two of their three contests. Swan Valley; meanwhile, is coming off back-to-back weekend splits with Neepawa. Carter Cockburn was named the league's player of the month in January as he recorded 16 points.

"They're creeping up in the standings so we need to get the job done," said Luke Morris. "We'll be prepared and ready to go when the puck drops on Wednesday."

Dauphin enters the contest one point behind Waywayseecappo for first in the West Division, Swan Valley is in third.

Game notes:

  • Luke Morris and Nick Braun both have five points against Swan Valley this season
  • Brad Fortin, Carter Cockburn and Jacob Paler-Chow all have three points against Dauphin
  • Dauphin is 4-1 against the Stampeders this season
  • The last meeting at the Centennial was a 5-2 win for Swan Valley

Brenden Birch-Hayden is a member of the Parkland U18 Rangers this season and next year, the Ranger is heading up north.

The 17-year-old has signed his letter of intent with the OCN Blizzard as the AAA season enters its final month of the regular season. Birch-Hayden is having a solid season with Parkland and he's looking forward to joining one of the most storied franchises in the MJHL.

"It's super exciting, it's been pretty overwhelming all of the support I've received," said Birch-Hayden. "It's been a super cool experience and I can't wait to join them. It's a great organization and will be a perfect spot for me."

Birch-Hayden has racked up 11 wins this season. He also has a solid .905 save percentage and gives the Rangers a chance to win every time he's between the pipes.

"I've been working hard at practice and I'm trying to do all of the little things," said Birch-Hayden. "We have a great coaching staff as well that pushes me every single day and that helps me."

At 13-13-15, the Rangers are in sixth place; however, they're just two points behind the Winnipeg Thrashers for fourth place and they also have three games in hand. A busy weekend is coming up for the team with them being in Brandon on Friday before playing their biggest pair of games of the season so far. After their tilt with Brandon, the team returns to Dauphin for a pair of games against the Thrashers, the team they are two points behind.

Parkland has competed well against every team in the league, they've beaten the top teams and Birch-Hayden has a ton of faith in the club.

"I truly do, we have a ton of young talent on our team," said Birch-Hayden. "As long as we go from puck drop to the final buzzer, we're going to have lots of success. We're confident in ourselves, it's just about being consistent at all times."

The Dauphin Kings recorded 43 shots on Sunday; however, they ran into a hot goalie and came up short.

Wrapping up a weekend home-and-home, Dauphin pushed late but fell short in a 3-2 loss against Virden.

“I believe we played a pretty good game tonight, we just didn’t get the bounces,” said Morris after the game. “We battled hard, sometimes it just doesn’t work out.”

After Virden opened the scoring, Luke Morris scored two straight as Dauphin opened a 2-1 lead.

Virden ultimately went 2-for-5 on the man advantage and that turned out to be the difference on the night. Morris now has 15 goals this year in his rookie season. Happy with his success, he knows he couldn’t do it by himself.

“Not at all, I have some amazing line mates and teammates that push me everyday,” said Morris.

Dauphin will make their way to Swan River on Wednesday to play the Stampeders. The Stamps’ came out on top last time the two teams met.

“Big game for us, they’re climbing in the standings so we need to put a solid effort in,” ended Morris.

Connor Dewar was off to a great start with the American Hockey League's Iowa Wild and it didn't take him long to get an opportunity to make his National Hockey League debut this season. The former Parkland Ranger was called up on October 28 and he made his debut that evening as the club took on the Seattle Kraken.

"It was exciting, a lot of people had a hand in me getting there and I'm really grateful for all of the support," said Dewar. "I think the rookie lap was the most nervous I had been. I had some jitters but I just went out and was myself and I think I played pretty well."

Dewar's first stint with the Wild was quite short-lived as he was sent down on November 7. But less than two months later, Dewar was recalled by the Wild on December 30 and less than a month later, the former Ranger had found the back of the net for his first career NHL goal.

On the ice on January 24 against the Montreal Canadiens, Connor achieved some personal history as he walked over the blue-line, skated down to the high slot and potted his first goal with the Wild.

Connor also had one assist in the game and he now has three points this season.

"All those hours on the outdoor rink, all of the morning workouts, they paid off," said Dewar. "I also couldn't have done it without my family, extended family and friends that were always by my side and supported it. It was an extremely special moment and one that I will never forget."

The former Ranger also wants to give some credit to his old team. In the 2014-15 season, Dewar scored 15 times and added 22 assists with the U18 Rangers and he says despite the thought of some thinking they need to head off to academies to play at the next level, that's not the case.

"Playing with Parkland was great for me, it allowed me to gain some experience and to feel good about where my game was," said Dewar. "I got a ton of ice time and it was a great place to be, I still talk to some of my teammates from that team quite often."

In his action with the Iowa Wild this season, Dewar found the back of the net six times and added five assists in 12 games.

In a special treat for Kings fans, the team will play two games at Credit Union Place this weekend.

On Friday, the team will welcome the OCN Blizzard to town and the two teams will once again play in Dauphin on Sunday evening, both games are slated for 7:30 p.m.

Tickets go on sale to the general public at noon on Friday.

An excellent third period pushed the Parkland U15 Rangers to victory on Saturday.

Playing in Portage, Parkland scored four times in the third period in a 6-2 win.

Luke Myhre led the team with two goals while Ronin Mouck, Tyrell Leaske, Quinten Fisk and Sam Swanton scored in the game.

Owen Martyniuk went 35-of-37 in net.
