The Parkland U18 Rangers failed to gain any ground on Friday night.

In Winnipeg for a critical series against the Thrashers, Parkland lost the opener, 11-6 in a wild game.

Winnipeg opened an 11-4 lead before Parkland scored three straight.

Kyan Grouette scored twice while Marco Bodnarski, Hayden Seib, Rylan Gibbs and Parker Boguski also scored for Parkland.

The two teams play Saturday night at 5:45.

Entering a huge two-game road set against the Winnipeg Thrashers, the Parkland U18 Rangers helped themselves last weekend when they earned four of a possible six points.

They opened the weekend by beating the Wheat Kings which was followed by a loss against the Thrashers but on Sunday, the team rebounded to hammer them, 8-2. Now, the Rangers are just two points back of the fourth playoff spot in the league entering this weekend.

Kyan Grouette was a big reason for the team's success last week as he went off scoring three times and he added four assists. The seven-point total has earned the Dauphinite some recognition as he's been named the CCM Player of the Week. In 34 games this season, Kyan has scored 17 times to go along with 30 assists.

"It's an honour to be named the player of the week but I certainly can't do it all myself," said Grouette. "My linemates Rylan Gibbs and Jayce Legaarden are a big reason why I'm producing the way I am, we're really playing well together."

This season has also been a historic one for the Parkland Ranger. He was called up by the Everett Silvertips and back on December 28, Kyan scored his first Western Hockey League goal and the 'Tips earned a thrilling 6-5 overtime win. He ended up playing four games with Everett before returning to Parkland.

"The WHL experience was amazing, it was an honour just to be called up," said Grouette. "It was a great pass on my first goal, it was special. Everyone was so happy for me and I'm just happy that I was able to help the team win a game."

As mentioned above, Parkland will play in Winnipeg against the Thrashers on Friday night and Saturday night.

"We know how big these games are this weekend and we're prepared," said Grouette. "We really have to dial it in and get the job done, we're motivated."

The Dauphin Kings earned two key points on Thursday night in a thriller against OCN.

Dauphin held a one-goal lead on two different occasions before OCN battled back to force overtime. Ultimately, Dauphin earned the extra point in a 4-3 win.

On the game-winning goal, Klim Georgiev took the puck coast-to-coast and when the puck was left in front, Nick Braun scored his second of the game and it was the game-winner.

“We found a way to stick with it tonight, these were two big points,” said Georgiev after the game. “Sure we made some mistakes but we found a way to get the job done.”

After OCN opened the scoring, Brayden Dube scored his first of the game to tie it and with less than two seconds left, Colby Jaquet gave Dauphin a 2-1 lead heading into the third.

OCN scored two third-period goals compared to Dauphin’s one but they only earned a single point in the end. Dauphin has now won four straight games and will host OCN on Saturday.

For the second time in less than a week, the Dauphin Kings make their way up north to play the OCN Blizzard. Dauphin swept the Blizzard last weekend which included a 3-1 win at the Gordon Lathlin Memorial Centre.

Thursday's contest is the seventh of eight between the two teams with the final meeting coming on Saturday at Credit Union Place. Dauphin has won five of six meetings against OCN this year and have outscored them 8-1 in the past two games meanwhile in all six meetings, Dauphin has scored 26 goals against the Blizzard while giving up just 10.

The game will also be OCN's third in as many days as they played the Oil Capitals on Tuesday and Wednesday, earning just two points. OCN will enter the game 11 points back of a playoff spot and will have to go on a heater if they want to make the big dance.

Eight of OCN's wins this season have come on home ice and the Gordon Lathlin is always one of the most hostile rinks to play in.

"The fans are awesome, honestly the energy they have gives me energy and the rest of the team as well," said Nolan Wickham. "They're passionate about their team and it's great to see."

You can hear the game on 730CKDM with Darnell Duff.

Game notes:

  • Dauphin has won three in a row and five of their last six while OCN has just one win in their last nine games.
  • Colby Jaquet has three goals and six assists against OCN this season while Logan Calder and Ben Hackl both have seven points
  • Riley Zimmerman and Dain Sardelli top OCN's production against Dauphin this season with three points apiece
  • Carson Cherepak was very impressive last weekend picking up wins in both games. He now has a .962 save percentage against OCN this season to go along with a 1.20 goals-against average

The Parkland Vipers will be holding a volleyball camp this Saturday and Sunday at the DRCSS.

It'll take place from 1 to 3 at the DRCSS and is open to girls in grades five and six. If you're interested in playing on the 12U team this year, this camp is just for you. Ted Rea said this camp is a great opportunity to get some reps in before the club season.

"At this age, our main focus is to develop these young girls' skills and help them fall in love with the game," said Rea. "Volleyball is a great game and it can be played with two people or 12 people, so there are options."

If you want to take part, you must call Ted at 648-4433 to confirm your attendance. Only 32 girls will be accepted and 20 have already confirmed their spots. Tammy Sliworsky will once again host the camp, she's a former member of the national women's team.

You will also need to bring proof of vaccination or a negative test within 72 hours.
