Connor Shaw kicked off his Manitoba Rural Amateur Championships this afternoon at the Portage Golf Club.

The last tournament Shaw played in was the Manitoba Amateur last month where he missed the cut.

Although there is no cut in this tournament, Shaw put himself in a tough position to win after shooting a first round, 7 over 77.

Shaw bogeyed two of his first three holes, before getting one back with a birdie on five. He finished the back nine with a bogey on seven, to card a front nine, 37.

On the back nine, Shaw was one over through five holes, but he played the 16th through the 18th hole in four over par.

Shaw will enter tomorrow's final round, nine strokes behind Trevor McCartney who plays his golf at the Portage Golf Club.
