Loreen Husband has been cooking since she was four years old.

When you find her in a kitchen, you know something gourmet is about to be served up.

"I love the magic of it. You can make things that taste good," said Husband. "You can play with things. Food isn't made just one way; you can make it many different ways. I love putting my heart into it, I enjoy feeding people with love."

One of Loreen's staples is a delectable borscht. She makes a great potato leek soup, and her lasagna will have you going up for thirds every time. In 2022, Loreen completed her first adult cookbook, 'The Best of Simple Fare'. 

In June of 2024, Husband started another cookbook, this time for kids. Titled 'A Cookbook for Kids, ZYX, We FINALLY came FIRST!', Loreen is ready to launch her newest creation on Saturday. The community is invited to join Loreen as she launches the book.

It will start at 11:00 a.m. at the Dauphin Public Library. There will be a hunt for some little piggies, and if your child finds a pig in the library, they will get a free book. The books will also be for sale on Saturday.

If you can't make it on Saturday, but are interested in purchasing one for your child, head to Simple Fare by Loreen. You can also call her at 572-6226.

"It's exciting for me to give this to kids so they have something that can be their own," said Husband. "They can learn how to become a good cook. We have a grand niece who has made several things and is loving it."

Loreen and her son Benji are also in the process of writing a series of children's books. She says being able to inspire the younger generation to spend time in the kitchen cooking is a proud moment for her.

"Oh yeah, for sure. Whoever thought that you could do this sort of stuff," commented Husband. "Even Simple Fare, the cooking part of it, I never thought it could be a reality. Then being able to write cookbooks, get them together, make them interesting, and fun."

She ran Simple Fare by Loreen from 2016 to 2023. She served thousands in Dauphin and the area and always received rave reviews.

It was bittersweet when she retired in 2023, but she has seven years to look back on. Seven years full of laughs, memories, and incredible food.

"It was amazing. I love feeding people. Right now, I'm back at Whitmore School twice a week helping the kids to have a healthy lunch," ended Husband. "To me, feeding people has always been a part of my heart, and probably always will be."

Her current kids' cookbook, A Cookbook for Kids, ZYX, We FINALLY came FIRST, is on sale for $19.99.

The initial list of acts for the 2026 edition of Dauphin's Countryfest has been released.

Headliners include Jelly Roll, Nate Smith, and Tyler Hubbard, with other confirmed acts including Blackhawk, Brett Kissel, the Hunter Brothers and Cameron Whitcomb, just to name a few.

Now, for the other important piece of info.... Promoter Rob Waloschuk shares details on when tickets go on sale. 

"Countryfests members have until the end of the day on October 28th to get their tickets before anyone else.  And then on October 30th at 9 am, tickets will go on saale to the general public.  Countryfest.ca is the best place to purchase them, or you can call 1-800-361-7300. Or if you are in the Dauphin area, you can head down to the office on 2nd Avenue North East on that day."

The 2026 edition of Dauphin's Countryfest goes June 25th to 28th at the Selo Ukraina site, south of Dauphin.

For the first time in 32 years, the Toronto Blue Jays will play in the World Series.

In 1993, Joe Carter's walk-off home run lifted the Jays past the Philadelphia Phillies as Toronto won its second consecutive Fall Classic. That was the last time Toronto has been this far.

That all changes on Friday. George Springer hit a go-ahead three-run homer on Monday night as the Blue Jays came from behind to beat the Seattle Mariners in seven games. On Friday, game one of the World Series between the Jays and the Los Angeles Dodgers hits the field at the Rogers Centre.

The first pitch is set for 7:00 p.m., and if your TV isn't big enough, the Countryfest Community Cinema has you covered. They'll broadcast games one through four on the big screen with the biggest sound. There are 108 spots available on a first-come, first-served basis.

"It's something that the board has talked about for a while, even before I came on," said Shawn Sarkonak. "Whether it's the Winnipeg Jets, the Grey Cup, or the Super Bowl, we've been looking for a way to bring these big events to the theatre. With the authorization of our booking agent, we're able to pull it off."

The Cinema will be using theatre one. A $10 donation is required to watch, and all funds support the CCC. The World Series is coming to Dauphin's big screen, and you can be a part of the action.

It's set to be an epic series. The Dodgers enter as the favourites, but with how the Blue Jays have been playing, and how the country is rallying behind the team, anything can happen. You can cheer on the Boys in Blue in theatre comfort right in your backyard.

"It seems to have blown up," offered Sarkonak. "I posted it on our social media platforms, and by the end of the evening, it had been shared like 70 times and well over 100 likes. The engagement has been incredible.

All games start at 7:00 p.m. Game one is on Friday, game two is on Saturday, game three is on Monday, and game four is on Tuesday.

The Rotary Club of Dauphin has been able to put approximately half a million dollars back into the community through the success of its Race RMNP series. 

Local Rotarian Luke Love describes some of the projects that have benefited from these races. 

"Northgate trails, the Manitoba Summer Games - with assisting with the track at the high school and those upgrades.  The skate park, various playgrounds that can be found around the city.  The new waterslide back when we got that at the pool." 

Rotary's Race RMNP series includes the Manitoba Snowshoe Run, the Riding Mountain Half Marathon, the Epic East gate trail run, and the Moose Knuckle Adventure Race.

43 cats are looking for their forever home.

"In particular, we have three senior cats that have been with us for a long time," said Nicola Donaldson, cat committee member. "We have five cats that have been with us since 2023 and 16 that have been with us since 2024. They've all been living in the shelter and are looking for a new home."

The Parkland Humane Society is full of furry friends. Currently, they're looking for donations of wet and dry cat food. Parkland Humane Society cat committee member, Nicola Donaldson, says they're also on the hunt for cat litter.

If you have the means to donate, take them to the Humane Society between 1:00 and 4:00 p.m., Monday to Saturday. You can also call 638-6966. The Humane Society also accepts monetary donations, and they greatly appreciate your support.

And with 43 cats, including three senior cats, you could gain a new best friend.

"Basically, if anyone is looking for a pet, cats are the perfect option," said Donaldson. "They will love you unconditionally. They love to sit on your lap. So you can sit by the window with the fireplace on and have your best friend on your lap. It's the perfect Christmas present, but not just for Christmas, animals are for life."

Donaldson volunteered for two years at the Humane Society before joining the cat committee. She's passionate about animals. She owns seven cats and a dog.

Over $25,000 has been handed out, as Fusion Credit Union has announced their 2025 Community Infusion Grand Prize Winner.

The winner of $20,000 was Silver Frame Photo & Video Memories from Dauphin.

Congratulations also goes to the second place winner of $5,000, Grit & Glam Salon in Dauphin.

Two other finalists, who each earned a $2,500 prize, were Sumatu Intercontinental Traditional Wears in Brandon, and Friendly's Grocery Co-op in Inglis.

The search for Adam McKay is over.

The 32-year-old was found at a home in Roblin by the Roblin RCMP. An entry warrant was obtained after McKay wouldn't leave the residence, and at 1:15 a.m., officers entered and arrested Adam without further incident.

McKay remains in custody and faces a slew of charges, including robbery, flight from the police, break and enter, and dangerous operation of a motor vehicle.

Rod Carberry was born in Newfoundland and grew up in Lynn Lake.

He's been fishing all his life; it's in his blood. For the Dauphinite, there is no feeling quite like being on the water with a rod in his hand, trying for that next big catch. For the past eight to 10 years, Carberry has taken his passion for the water to the next level. He's committed to the sport and is on the water honing his craft at every opportunity.

For him, Rod always looks forward to a trip to the water after finishing his day job.

"You know, you get out into a boat or for some people, it's the shore. It's an excellent place to go and reset. You can focus on the task at hand and not worry about many things going on in the background," said Carberry. "For me, there is a competitive factor. There's that factor to catch the next personal best fish. There's a bit of a drive, competitiveness, and peace."

Last week on Friday, Rod found himself on Clearwater Lake by The Pas. History was made. He started on the water at sunrise, and hours later, he was still on the water. Catching many fish along the way, Rod recorded a new personal best. A forty-two and a quarter inch Lake Trout. His biggest Lake Trout catch ever, surpassing his previous high of forty-one and a quarter inches.

"Yeah, it was amazing. I've spent so much time," Carberry. "I've told everyone in my angling circle that 42 inches has always been my goal. I held my previous forty-one and a quarter personal best for 15 years. This has been a lot of work and effort. It's an incredible feeling."

And to add a cherry on top of his new personal best Lake Trout catch, Rod made the big catch alongside his son, Troy. Rod has had Troy in the boat or ice shack since he was born. For years, they've shared many memories on the water, and this is another one.

For Rod, sharing the waters with his son is the ultimate experience.

"Oh, it's amazing. He's a pretty accomplished angler himself. He's a full-time guide at Elk Island Lodge on Gods Lake," offered Carberry. "I know that his competitiveness is to beat me. For me, it's not to let that happen. It's special that it's father/son time and you've got a person you respect so much."

When it comes to what is next for Rod, the chase for the next big catch will keep him determined and locked in.

"Yeah, I realize it's going to be a tough one to beat, but that won't stop me from trying," ended Carberry. "It's going to involve looking into different lakes and areas that would have a higher population of those bigger ones. We'll see, I won't stop trying."

A new personal best with his son by his side resulted in a dream trip up north for Rod Carberry.

The 2024 Manitoba Summer Games Host Committee announced the recipients of Dauphin's Manitoba Games legacy funding on Wednesday at Credit Union Place. 

Taking place August 11 to 17, 2024, the Games are Manitoba's largest multi-sport event. The massive success of the event, along with grants and an incredible sponsorship campaign, resulted in a surplus of $196,419, in addition to improvements to venues around the region.

Northgate Trails Inc. received $100,000 for capital infrastructure improvements, $60,000 went to Dauphin Recreation Services for Maamawi Park, wave pool, and competition compliance upgrades. Mountain View School Division received $16,000 for maintenance of the Myles Haverluck Athletics Facility.

$10,000 was given to the Dauphin & District Community Foundation to establish sport scholarships for graduating students, $5,000 to the Rural Municipality of Lakeshore for the summer sailing program at Manipogo Provincial Park, and the Gilbert Plains Country Club received $5,000 for golf course and amenity improvements. 

Carla Wolfenden was co-chair for the event.

"You know, it's the icing on the cake of eight years of a lot of work and dedication of our volunteers," said Wolfenden. "We are so proud of what we were able to do for our community. The Games were a massive success."

The Games featured over 3,000 athletes, coaches, and volunteers. 

"Dauphin has always put on an amazing show. I'm still running into people in gyms and rinks around the province, and people say they were at the Games and they were great," ended Wolfenden. "The show that we put on was not just for the fans, but the athletes as well; they all had a great time."

Capital projects before the Games, totalling over $2.5 million, include the Myles Haverluck Athletics Facility and outdoor basketball court at the Dauphin Regional Comprehensive Secondary School (DRCSS), two sports courts, the initiation of the Northgate Trail System, as well as improvements at Vermillion Sportsplex and Kin Aquatic Centre.

Great job, Dauphin and the area, you helped make the 2024 Manitoba Summer Games a smashing hit and an event that will never be forgotten.

The Swan Valley Outdoor Association will hold their annual banquet and auction evening this Saturday night. 

The event is a fundraiser for the Association, who provides grants to a number of outdoor groups and activities in the Swan River Valley.

Association member Gary Wowchuk says since they formed in 2018, the SVOA has provided around 190,000 dollars in grants. 

"That includes over 60 grants to various organizations.  And a lot of that has gone to the youth.  To school groups for various functions that they are doing.  To areas like the dock at Wellman Lake, to the snowmobile club, trail riders, and an archery club in the area."

Tickets for the event, which will take place at the Veterans Community Hall in Swan River, are $75 each. 

They are available at the Swan River Star and Times, Spruce Products, Cook and Cooke Insurance, or from any member of the Swan Valley Outdoor Association.
