11 years ago, Lindsay Lepla saw her niece and nephew walking around town on Halloween night in Ste. Rose asking for non-perishable food items to donate to the local food bank.
She thought it was the most beautiful thing in the world to do. 11 years later, the giving back in Ste. Rose is stronger than ever.
On Friday, students in Ste. Rose will be canvassing the town, starting at 1:00 p.m., picking up donations that'll then be donated to the food bank.
If you have any non-perishable food items, leave them on your doorstep.
"I think it's a beautiful way to have children learn to give back to their community, rather than taking," said Lepla.
This will be the 11th year that Lindsay has spearheaded 'Scare Away Hunger'. She says the event continues to gain steam and is looking forward to Friday.
"It's very successful. The longer it's been running, the more we get," ended Lepla. "Usually, I'm delivering two truck-beds full of food to the food bank every year."
Lepla says the food bank in Ste. Rose is highly utilized, and there are always families waiting for food.
So on Friday, you can help make a difference and feed a family by leaving non-perishable food items on your doorstep.

The Parkland U18 Rangers return to Credit Union Place on Friday night for the first time in nearly a month.
The Southwest Cougars come to town for a 7:30 puck drop. Since a season-opening loss against Southwest, the Rangers have earned points in eight straight games.
On Friday, they'll be hosting their fifth annual Hockey Fights Cancer game. It's a game that has drawn large crowds in past years.
Erin Sigvaldason is a part of the committee organizing Friday's festivities.
"All proceeds from the game are divided between the three local cancer care units in Dauphin, Swan River, and Russell," said Sigvaldason. "We're having a puck toss, ribbon tree, and a raffle table. The admission is $10 and free for all healthcare workers."
The Rangers have raised tens of thousands of dollars in the first four years for the three local cancer wards. On Friday, they'll look to add to that total in a big way.
"Last year, we raised approximately $5,500, and it continues to grow every year," added Sigvaldason.
Before Friday's game, the Rangers will honour Miguel Van Den Driessche and his family. Miguel recently lost his mom after her battle with cancer. The Rangers will wear their pink jerseys for the last time. After Friday's game, those jerseys will be auctioned off.
There will be many great prizes up for grabs, including Winnipeg Blue Bombers tickets, simulator time at Caddie's Golf Simulator & Lounge, a one-night stay at Best Western, and many more.
It's an important game for Parkland. They're seven points behind the Thrashers for first place in the league. The Rangers have been rolling and will look to keep doing so. But Friday's game is more than just hockey.
"We're honouring a teammate, this is much more than hockey," ended Sigvaldason. "It's about everyone's fight with cancer."

Two people were charged with trafficking in Swan River after the RCMP seized a large amount of meth.
On Wednesday, the RCMP, just after midnight, stopped a vehicle on Main Street in the community with three females inside. Open liquor was spotted inside, and the 34-year-old driver was arrested under the Liquor, Gaming and Cannabis Control Act.
Two other females, aged 35 and 48, exited the vehicle.
During a search, a Ziploc bag with more than 250 grams of meth was found. The street value of those drugs is estimated between $15,000 and $25,000. The driver was charged with several offences, including Trafficking. The 48-year-old was also charged with Trafficking.

Final touches are being put on the Yorkton Exhibition Grounds for the 35th edition of Grain Miller's Harvest Showdown.
The annual festival goes November 5th to 8th, and promises something for every member of the family, according to Yorkton Exhibition General Manager Cheyenne Quam.
"On Wednesday and Thursday, we have multiple events during the day, including heavy horse pulls, chore teams, mutton busting, mini chuckwagons, and ag education tours for students in grades 4-7. So it will be quite busy. And also our multi-day trade show."
Headlining this year's festival is once again the Mazer Group PBR, which will take place November 7th and 8th in Westland Insurance Arena.
Outside of the PBR and the post-PBR dances, which are both ticketed events, everything else during Harvest Showdown is free to attend.

Jelly Roll, Nate Smith, and Tyler Hubbard will headline the party of the summer.
Dauphin's Countryfest is set to be an epic weekend next summer. Add in Brett Kissel, Cameron Whitcomb, the Hunter Brothers, and Owen Riegling, to name a few, and it's going to be a weekend to remember.
Members of Countryfest have been purchasing their tickets, and Duane McMaster with Countryfest reports that general admission tickets are selling very well, while VIP tickets are about two-thirds sold.
He says the reaction from the public has been overwhelming.
The Countryfest office stayed open late earlier this week to accommodate all those members wanting to lock in their tickets.
"We've had a lot of new members who were willing to join so they could get access to tickets early," said McMaster. "There is a lot of buzz out there that we will sell out, and we would love that."
If you aren't a Countryfest member, your wait to get tickets ends very soon. On Thursday morning at 9:00, tickets go on sale to the general public.
You can purchase them at Countryfest, call 1-800-361-7300, or even as McMaster says, you can purchase them in person at 28 - 2nd Avenue NE in Dauphin.
"We're expecting tickets to move very fast. All indications that we've had with Jelly Roll, he sells out shows all across North America," continued McMaster. "We have a really solid lineup with our headliners, second to closers, and supporting acts as well."
Ticket options include a four-day general admission weekend pass for $309 plus fees and taxes, a four-day VIP bar weekend pass for $529 plus taxes and fees, a four-day VIP bar seated weekend pass for $599 plus taxes and fees, and a four-day VIP deluxe weekend pass for $829 plus taxes and fees.
There's also camping passes available.
Many country music lovers in Dauphin and the area are saying this is the best lineup in years.
For McMaster, it's a proud moment for him and the entire crew behind the scenes that they were able to secure such a great lineup.
"We're thrilled. We all put so much time and energy into this; we have a programming committee that works with Rob, our promoter," ended McMaster. "It's incredible to see this lineup come together. We're all excited about the possibilities that this lineup has brought to us. The positive feeling that everyone has towards Countryfest right now makes us feel like it's all worthwhile."
Countryfest 2026 goes down June 25 to 28.

Thursday is the deadline for nominations for this year's Manitoba Outstanding Young Farmer Program.
If you know a hard working farmer between the ages of eighteen and thirty-nine, that earn at least two-thirds of their income from farming, you are encouraged to nominate them for this annual award.
The winner will be announced in March of next year during a special ceremony at the Elkhorn Resort, and then represent our province at the National recognition event.

Dauphin RCMP arrested two men in Dauphin after they damaged a home.
On October 23 at 10:49 a.m., officers responded to a break and enter in progress at a vacant home under renovation on 3rd Avenue SE. The men didn't leave the home when officers asked them to. The officers saw a man trying to crawl out of a side window. He was arrested.
Another male was seen crawling out of the bottom of the back door carrying a backpack, and he was arrested without incident. The men, aged 36 and 47, from Dauphin, caused extensive damage in the basement. Officers also seized two hockey bags full of copper wire and piping.
The two have been charged with breaking and entering.

A total of five people will seek the lone vacancy on the Mountain View School Division board of trustees.
The list of candidates was released on Wednesday, and includes Carter Taylor-Luke, Sonja Blank, Michelle Smigelski, Rigby Devos, and Valerie McInnes.
Voting will take place on December 2nd from 8 am to 8 pm at the Dauphin Friendship Centre.
If you can not vote on election day, advanced voting will take place on November 26th, also at the Friendship Centre.
Only City of Dauphin residents can vote in this by-election, which will fill a vacancy left after the passing of trustee John Taylor.

RCMP in Shoal Lake are looking to identify suspects in a recent break-in at the Strathclair Fire Hall.
The incident occurred at around 7:15 am on October 22nd, and led to the theft of a truck, trailer and UTV, as well as significant damage to the inside of the hall.
The trailer was eventually found about a half mile outside of Russell, while the truck was recovered in a parking lot in Russell.
Mounties have released photos of the two suspects, who are believed to be travelling in a white motorhome.

The overall experience for VIA Rail passengers in Dauphin is about to improve.
Starting on Saturday and running through April 30, 2026, all passengers boarding a train in Dauphin, or arriving in Dauphin, will have access to washrooms and a warm waiting space inside the Dauphin Rail Museum.
The Rail Museum will open its doors approximately 30 minutes before each scheduled train arrival and remain open until departure. It's a pilot project between the City of Dauphin and the Dauphin Rail Museum.
Jason Gilmore, the president of the Dauphin Rail Museum, says this project has been in the works for many years.
"Kind of more so came to fruition late last year, early this year. Seeing ridership has been up since COVID," said Gilmore. "With the tourism branding of Tourism Dauphin, we wanted to be more welcoming of VIA Rail passengers, especially in cold weather. We are very excited to partner with the City of Dauphin for this pilot project."
Gilmore also says it's a great way to explore Dauphin's rail heritage inside. The Dauphin Rail Museum underwent a $1.4 million restoration that was completed in 2001.
It was designated a Manitoba Heritage Building and a Heritage Railway Station of Canada. The museum preserves over 125 years of regional railway history through its collection of artifacts, photographs, and archival materials.
There is free Wi-Fi, interactive QR code experiences, and hands-on exhibits designed for younger visitors.
"Always, yeah. This will expand our hours a bit," said Gilmore. "Now, we'll definitely be open during the hours that people are waiting for the train, or just arriving in town."
Hours of operation will be updated daily on their Facebook page, beginning November 1.
Gilmore says there are many reasons why taking the train for your next adventure is a good idea. The first reason is the price. A one-way trip to Winnipeg on Saturday starts at $30.
"If you're not in an absolute time crunch, that's one thing some people have an issue with," ended Gilmore. "It's a great way to travel. You can walk around on the train; there's an observation car, and you can have a beverage or a snack. I find it's a very neat way to travel."

The R.M. of Dauphin wants to remind its residents of a pair of deadlines coming up this Friday.
Your 2025 property taxes and the July-September utility bills are both due on that date.
Payments must be received by the R.M. office by 4:30 PM on Friday in order to avoid any late penalties.

Cheques can also be placed in their secure drop box, or in-person at the R.M. office for payments by cash, cheque, debit, or money order.
The R.M. office will be open over the lunch hour all this week in order to accept payments.
