We're heading into Week 14.

There are only seven weeks left in the regular season. Playoff races will intensify. The hits get harder. The injuries start to pile up. There has been just about everything so far in the 2026 Canadian Football League season. Big upsets.

Big upsets. Shocking defeats. The Winnipeg Blue Bombers are not dominating on home field. And the Ottawa Redblacks' winless streak reaching more than a calendar year.

As the Labour Day Weekend approaches, it's Rivalry Week in the league. The Edmonton Elks tangle with the Calgary Stampeders on Monday. The Toronto Argonauts play the Hamilton Tiger-Cats on Monday. The BC Lions travel coast-to-coast to play the Montreal Alouettes.

Most eyes, however, will be in Saskatchewan. The Blue Bombers are in Regina on Sunday evening to play the Roughriders in the first of a home-and-home between these two storied rivals. Saskatchewan is second in the West with seven wins in 11 games.

The Bombers, meanwhile, are 6-5 this year. They're coming off their biggest win of the season. They hammered the Alouettes last week. The Als possess the league's best record.

On Sunday at 6:00 p.m., it's time to go. David Reese of the Bombers said, 'Man, it's almost like a duel; we're going to fight and fight again, and see who comes out on top.' For Bombers coach Mike O'Shea, his team is ready to embrace the raucous crowd in Regina.

"They've played in front of big crowds. It's nothing new," said O'Shea. "I think they're excited. They've embraced the fact that Winnipeggers and Manitobans support our team almost religiously. They love that part of it. At this point, they've probably realized the same sort of thing happens in Saskatchewan. It should be a fun game in that regard."

In last week's convincing 16-point win over Montreal, Zach Collaros was brilliant. He went 26-for-32 for 324 yards and two touchdowns. Brady Oliveira rushed for 106 yards and one touchdown. Ontaria Wilson caught nine passes for 114 yards, while Tim White had 96 yards receiving.

If it wasn't a perfect game from Winnipeg, it was close.

Saskatchewan had to pull off a dramatic comeback last week to beat the Toronto Argonauts. They outscored them 16-2 in the final 30 minutes to win their seventh game. Trevor Harris completed 23 passes for 313 yards. KeeSean Johnson had a monster game for the Green and White.

He caught 10 passes for 146 yards and one touchdown. 

The equation is rather simple for Winnipeg. With a win, they would jump into a tie with Saskatchewan. The Bombers are 3-1 on the road this year. Saskatchewan, meanwhile, has won four of six home games.

At practice this week, the Bombers dubbed in crowd noise to simulate what they expect to hear on Sunday. 

"Yeah, it's always working through it. Especially if you have a few new guys added to the mix," said O'Shea. "It's something to get used to. Teams have similarities when it comes to crowd noise and using it in practice. It's just how you deploy it in practice. Yeah, we're working through it."

It was a solid effort for a pair of golfers from the Clear Lake Golf Course.

Ron Cornell and Rick Twaddle teamed up for Golf Manitoba's four-ball championship on Wednesday. They shot a seven-under 64. That put them on the podium with a third-place finish. They finished three strokes behind this year's champions.

Dale Coulter and Jason Thorpe of Brandon finished at 10 under. 

Brad Clement and Gerry Beaudette of the Clear Lake Golf Course finished in 22nd. They shot seven over.

Last year's champions Carl Lechman and David Powell caught fire on the back nine. They shot eight under on the back. They were even after the front.

This event ended Golf Manitoba's season of champions. The Niakwa Country Club in Winnipeg will host Golf Canada's senior national championships next week.

The scramble of the summer continues to near.

The Dauphin Kings Par 3 Extravaganza will be on Saturday, September 12 at the Dauphin Lake Golf Club. With a 10:00 a.m. shotgun, it's a day full of great golf and plenty of laughs. The prizes are epic as well.

Tournament organizers had mulled over the idea of playing a few holes as par 4s or 5s. Christian Laughland, Director of Business Operations for the Kings, says ultimately, that won't be the case. So get your short irons ready for a chance to strike big.

"We talked to a lot of people who have played the tournament over the years, and they like the opportunity to win cash on every hole," said Laughland. "We want to cater to the golfers who make this tournament a success, so that's what we're going to do. We're going to leave it at 18 par 3 holes for $10,000 on every hole. There will be some other stuff as well."

It's been a tough summer for some courses in the Parkland. The Gilbert Plains Country Club is closed for the rest of the summer. The Dauphin Lake Golf Club has been closed for several days this summer due to heavy rains and standing water.

It's now open and is in brilliant condition. The grounds crew has done a fantastic job of getting the course in pristine condition.

Now Shawn Woods and his crew are set to host this annual event.

"It's an opportunity to support both the Dauphin Kings and the golf course," Laughland added. "It's always a great day on the course, an awesome atmosphere. There are all sorts of prizes to be won. Not only on the golf course but after your round as well. Then a great meal is added."

Before last year, the event was held earlier in the summer. Last year, tournament organizers moved the event to September, which was a great success.

"It was a great move because all of the players are here by then," continued Laughland. "They have the opportunity to get out and meet not only the sponsors, but the fans as well. That's very important to the hockey club."

Registration is open and is going well. If you've played before, you know how much fun it is. If you haven't, now is the perfect time to tee it up. 

It's $600 per team, which is $150 per player.

"Obviously that includes your meal, golf, and we give away a tee gift every year," ended Laughland. "You get a lot of bang for your buck. If you get a hole-in-one, you get really good bang for your buck because every hole is a $10,000 opportunity."

The Parkland Mavericks senior men's rugby team continues to prove they're elite.

In their penultimate regular-season game, the Mavericks went to work in Winnipeg. They scored early; they scored often. They played flawlessly defensively. There was never a doubt. The Mavericks improved their record to 8-2 with a commanding 56-19 victory over the Winnipeg Wasps.

In 10 games, the Mavericks have scored 345 points. That's an impressive average of 34.5 per game. Defensively, they've allowed 228. 

Jordan Campbell says the team is firing on all cylinders.

"Yeah, the boys are satisfied. The games that we lost we felt we had an opportunity in one of them," said Campbell. "We're not really thinking about the wins. We're thinking about how we're playing. This game, we played extremely well. Everyone contributed."

The Mavericks got off to a fantastic start to the season with back-to-back wins. Then, they hit a road bump. Against two premier teams, the Mavericks lost two straight. Since, they've been perfect. That's now six straight wins.

The team has already clinched first place in the Division Two standings. During their six-game run, the Mavericks have scored 219 points. They've given up only 89. 

Eight wins in 10 games. Dominating on the offensive side of the ball. Clinical defensively. 

"The guys are chatting; it's definitely ours to lose," said Campbell. "Combined over the past two seasons, we didn't reach eight. We're pretty happy and satisfied with how we're playing. The guys are getting pretty excited for the playoffs."

Garret Fletcher had a monster game for the Mavericks and was the player of the game. 

"He was sticking some huge tackles. He played so well," added Campbell. "He is by far the best hitter on our team. It doesn't matter who was coming at him; he let them have it. He also scored a try. It was very impressive."

In the victory, Ronin Mouck also stuffed the stat sheet. He had two tries and four converts. Julien Lopez had two tries. Colton Miner, Riley Keith, Nate Yury, and Owen Tyschinski all scored a try. 

The Mavericks now get a little bit of a break. They're off this weekend. On September 12, they head to Winnipeg to play the Wombats. It'll be an opportunity for the team to win seven straight heading into the playoffs. 

Campbell is also thanking all of the team's supporters. The team's Facebook continues to gain traction with 426 followers.

He says the support means everything to the team.

"Even in Winnipeg this past weekend, we had at least 30 fans there cheering us on," said Campbell. "Family members, people in the city coming to watch. For our home games, we've been getting really good turnouts. It's really nice to see. I know it's senior men's, but we have a bunch of athletes out there this year."

The Parkland Mavericks are making noise and continue to have their eyes on the ultimate goal: winning a championship.

The Dauphin Kings opened their preseason perfectly on Monday night.

After three competitive days at training camp over the weekend, the Kings beat the Northern Manitoba Blizzard, 5-2. Dauphin's Jake Myhre scored a goal and one assist. His older brother Luke is expected to be a big-time producer this season.

Max George had one goal and two assists. Ashton Shields, Collin Friedrich, and Nic Collins scored goals for the Kings. Dauphin scored three power-play goals. 

Ander Reyes started between the pipes for Dauphin. He went 11-for-12. Piet Mierau came in relief. He stopped 10 of 11 shots. 

Next up for the Kings is another home preseason game on Friday. They'll welcome the Waywayseecappo Wolverines to town on Friday night.

JJ Love and his Canadian teammates settled for a silver medal at the NORCECA Final Six event.

As the team's floor general, the Dauphin setter helped guide Canada to the final. In the championship match, the Canadians ran out of gas. They lost in three sets to the United States.

In pool play, Canada won three of its five games. They beat Mexico in three sets in the semifinals. Love and his teammates won two medals this month. They previously earned a bronze medal at the Pan American Cup.

JJ now has little time to rest.. He's now off to France to continue his professional career. He's playing in the country's top league.

He will play with Nice Volley-Ball of France's Ligue A.

Landyn Garton of Dauphin scored a pair of goals as Team Fee beat Team Trotz in the JoFo Cup on Saturday afternoon at Credit Union Place.

Returning players Kale Pratte and Kurtis Kinoshita also scored for Team Fee in the 7-3 victory. Cooper Johannsen, Jake Griffiths, and Liam Spencer scored singles. Gavin Smith scored a pair of goals for Team Trotz in the defeat. Max George also netted one. 

Dauphin now begins a five-game preseason slate. They welcome the Northern Manitoba Blizzard to town on Monday night. Puck drop is set for 7:00 p.m.

Jason Hrynkiw grew up in Dauphin with a love for all sports.

He gravitated to hockey in the winter. In the summer, when he was 15, golf was the go-to. From the first time he picked up a club, it was clear Jason had a knack for the game. He wanted to improve.

Stan Homenuik told him that if he wanted to, he needed to start playing in golf tournaments. Jason took that to heart. He began playing in Manitoba junior events. At 16, Hrynkiw became a household name in Manitoba golf.

He won Golf Manitoba's rural junior championship at the Teulon Golf and Country Club.

"It was almost a dream come true. I haven't been back to Teulon since that day," said Hrynkiw. "The feeling when you win something is an accomplishment. You can say, ' Hey, I did that. Especially in golf, you're there by yourself. It's all you; you did it all."

Jason continued playing hockey through high school. He loved being in Dauphin, but decided he needed a change. 

He wanted to take his golf talents to the next level, and that's exactly what he did. He received a golf scholarship at a school in Alabama in 1991. He stayed there till 1993. He then went to Northwood University and graduated in 1995.

During his collegiate career, Jason was always one of the top players on his team and won multiple tournaments. When his collegiate career ended, Jason didn't have the pathway to mini tour golf or the finances to chase the dream. He chose the work route and began working at a golf club in Florida right out of college.

He was working at Lost Tree Club in North Palm Beach. When he worked there, the legend Jack Nicklaus was a member. Over the years, Jason and Jack became close friends.

"Initially, it was a little intimidating," added Hrynkiw. "You're with the best player in the world on your driving range. He's hitting balls and would ask me what I thought. I said, ' What do you want me to tell you, pal? You're the best in the world."

While working at Lost Tree in the spring of 2003, an opportunity of a lifetime was presented to Jason. A member told him he had the gift to play golf. The member provided Jason with financial stability to play for five years. 

Hrynkiw qualified for the Canadian Tour and remained exempt on the circuit for seven years. Embracing the professional golf grind, Jason enjoyed some success and was proud of his efforts. 

"There are so many great players and guys that play in Canada," said Hrynkiw. "We all stay very friendly to this day. The experience out there is like none other. I know it's changed a little bit because the PGA Tour bought it. Back in the day, when it was on its own and the Canadian Tour, it was pretty cool. I'm going to cities around the country and being treated like gold. It was pretty fun."

Eight years after qualifying for the Canadian Tour, Jason had the opportunity to play at the highest level. He played in the PGA Tour's Puerto Rico Open in 2011. The field included Stephen Ames, David Hearn, Keegan Bradley, John Daly, and Henrik Stenson.

He finished 36 holes at even par and played the waiting game. He was in the scorer's area, and Matt Every made birdie on the 18th hole. Every's birdie pushed Jason out of weekend contention. He made some noise and missed making the cut in his PGA Tour debut by one stroke.

"So every time I see Matt, I say, ' Hey man, you cost me my first official PGA start and cut," said Hrynkiw. "He goes, ' Oh man, I wish I would have made par. That's a funny story that Matt and I share every time I see him."

Jason played his first two rounds with Bobby Gates, who finished the tournament in sixth, and Martin Piller.

"Both great players," he said. "It was a very, very cool experience. Any time you have a start at the highest level is pretty impressive."

13 years after his PGA Tour debut, Jason got another start playing with the best in the game. This time, at the senior level. He played in the 2024 Senior PGA Championship.

Richard Bland won the tournament. The field included Ernie Els, Steve Stricker, Stewart Cink, Mike Weir, and Padraig Harrington.

Battling a hip injury, Jason shot an 81 in his first round. That put him well back of the pack.

In his second round, Jason played some solid golf. He improved his score by seven strokes and shot a 74. He had birdies on holes 1, 5, 9, and 16. His birdie on the 16th came on the third-hardest hole on the course.

"I played with all heart that day. No pun intended, but I limped around the golf course because my hip was killing me," offered Hrynkiw. "Again, it was a great experience at a great club in Michigan."

Currently working as the head golf professional at Harmony Landing Country Club in Louisville, Kentucky, Hrynkiw doesn't often get the chance to work on his game.

He was hired to make a difference. The Club is looking to enhance golf operations, and Jason was the perfect fit.

"You know, we still have a lot of work ahead of us. Every day, we strive to exceed the expectations here at Harmony Landing," said Hrynkiw. "We've had a great summer. The season ends in about six weeks. This area is great. Hopefully, we stay here for a long time."

While he doesn't get as much practice in as he would like, Jason makes sure he remains sharp for when he does have to tee it up. Through qualifying, he earned his spot to compete in the 75th Annual Kentucky PGA of America Championship. 

Playing at the Heritage Hill Golf Club, the former Dauphinite opened his first round with bogies on seven and eight. He caught fire from there. He ended the front nine with a birdie on the ninth. He made back-to-back birdies on 10 and 11.

He then went back-to-back-to-back with three straight birdies on holes 15, 16, and 17. A four-under 68 gave Jason a one-stroke lead heading into the second round.

His final round came with some stress. On the 18th hole, he held a one-stroke lead. The equation was simple: make a par and win the tournament. Water left and bunkers on the right required a precise tee shot. He then had to maneuver the water before the green. He achieved that. 35 feet for birdie. Jason ran it five feet past. He made the putt coming back, and the celebration was on.

36 holes in the books, and Jason Hrynkiw was a Kentucky PGA of America champion.

"The rest is history. To win a section championship is huge," said Hrynkiw. "There are 41 sections in the country, and they only crown one champion every year. It's a huge honour. To win the Kentucky section championship is a huge feather in my cap. I'm very honoured to have won."

With dozens of texts and calls waiting for a reply, Jason hit the road and travelled back home with his championship trophy.

That trophy is now sitting in the clubhouse at his club: the Harmony Landing Country Club.

"It's great to represent the club. It's a feather in the cap for Harmony Landing when their golf professional excels and wins," said Hrynkiw. "It's very gratifying knowing I'm supported by the members. All the emails and texts I got."

If you're a golfer, are passionate about the game, and want to make a name for yourself, Jason says don't give up. He says stick with the process.

Jason Hrynkiw has never given up, and now, he's a Kentucky champion.

"Each and every day, I get up, and I try to make the club and myself better," Hrynkiw said. "I try to mentor my team members, assistant golf professionals, and everyone around me to be better at what they do each and every day."

What a journey it's been on the links for Jason Hrynkiw, who got his start in Dauphin and says he wouldn't be where he is today without all of the great people and mentors he spent time with in the City of Sunshine.

Landyn Cochrane played 213 games in the Manitoba Junior Hockey League.

He played 138 more games with the Minot State Beavers of the American Collegiate Hockey Association. He helped the Beavers win a national championship in 2023.

In the 2023-24 season, he was back where it all started. Landyn started his junior hockey career with the Waywayseecappo Wolverines in the 2014-15 season. Almost a decade later, he was the team's assistant coach. He joined Taylor Harnett's staff.

Four years later, Landyn is going into his fourth season behind the bench. He's entering his third season as the team's head coach and general manager.

"I have definitely learnt a lot. I'm still going to be learning this year," said Cochrane. "Just holding guys accountable and making sure they're getting better every day. Guys have a smile on their face coming to the rink. I take a lot of pride in helping my players get better every day. It's been working out pretty well for us."

The time of the year all fans in Waywayseecappo have been waiting for is here. Main camp gets underway at 4:00 p.m. on Friday. 

The Joe Brandon Cup intrasquad game happens on Sunday.

Cochrane says the group has arrived in town and it should be an extremely competitive camp.

"Very excited. I talked to a lot of our returning guys all summer," said Cochrane. "They're ready to get right back at it. We'll have about 14 or 15 returning players. The camp will be about 50 guys, and we'll get right into the preseason."

Following camp, the team's preseason immediately begins. They host Swan Valley at 7:30 p.m. on Monday. They head to Swan River for a rematch the next night. In all, the Wolverines will play six preseason games.

Two of them are against the Melville Millionaires of the Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League.

The other home-and-home set is against the Dauphin Kings. Waywayseecappo bounced Dauphin from the Turnbull Cup playoffs in four games last year. It was the second straight year the two teams have met in the first round of the playoffs.

Last year's series win was the Wolverines' first in team history.

With 14 to 15 returning players, Cochrane says the team is ready to grind. It's not necessarily about unfinished business or payback; it's about moving forward.

"It's taking that next step. Each year, we have to take a step towards our ultimate goal of making the championship series," said Cochrane. "A lot of these guys that I've been with for the past three years have seen growth in themselves and myself as a coach. I'm a better coach than I was two years ago. I keep improving, and the same thing with my players."

Ahead of the season, the Wolverines have named their captain. Treycen Wuttunee will wear the 'C' on his chest this year. Wuttunee played 57 regular-season games with the Wolverines last year. He scored six goals and had 22 points. In nine playoff games, he recorded four points.

Treycen opened his junior career in the Western Hockey League with the Edmonton Oil Kings. He played 41 games with them, notching four points. He then played 63 games in the Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League with the Battlefords North Stars.

That led him to Waywayseecappo and, he immediately became a fan favourite at the Arena Complex. Wuttunee wears his heart on his sleeve.

"He will do anything for the team. Any player, coach, or the community. He's a salt-of-the-earth human," said Cochrane. "He will be in a role to succeed this year. He has a lot of skill. We had him in a more energy and checking role last year. This year, we expect him to come to camp flying and make plays from the get-go."

There's a buzz in Waywayseecappo and the 2026-27 Wolverines are ready to live up to the hype.

On July 10, the Dauphin Kings announced Bryan Kromm as the organization's new head coach and general manager.

Kromm spent the past two seasons with the Trail Smoke Easters of the British Columbia Hockey League. Last year, he was the team's associate coach and assistant general manager. 

Bryan arrived in town earlier this month and immediately got to work. He moved into his new office at Credit Union Place and began exploring the community. The 31-year-old is now just days away from opening his first training camp with the team.

He's had the chance to meet many people in Dauphin so far and thanks everyone for the warm welcome.

"Very supportive of me and taking the job," said Kromm. "That's fantastic for me. The facilities are first-class. I don't think many Junior A programs have what we have here in Dauphin. Very fortunate that way as well."

Two weeks following his hiring, the team's coaching staff was set. Kirklan Lycar will serve as an assistant coach this season. Lycar is no stranger to the Dauphin Kings organization. He played for the club from 2014 to 2016. He had 46 goals and 39 assists for 85 points in 116 regular-season games.

He also had five playoff points in four games.

"For me, having someone familiar with Dauphin was huge," said Kromm. "The second thing is his age. He's green and fresh. He's excited to be a coach and work hard. It's been a good relationship so far. He's been answering the call whenever I ask; things have gone well."

Next on the menu is training camp. Ahead of the 2026-27 regular season, Dauphin holds camp this weekend at Credit Union Place. The first practice is on Friday morning at 11:30. Another one hits the ice at 12:30.

The first game is on Friday night at 6:00. Saturday's schedule includes a game from 10:00 to 11:30. The annual JoFo Cup starts at 4:00 on Saturday afternoon. That's followed by another team practice on Sunday morning.

The camp roster is smaller than it has been in the past.

"I'm hoping that with smaller numbers, guys realize that there is a fair shake for them," added Kromm. "They'll have to bring their best to the table. It should be a very competitive camp. I'm really excited about what we have coming in."

Immediately following camp, the Kings' preseason begins. On Monday night at 7:00, they host the Northern Manitoba Blizzard. It's the first of five exhibition contests for the Kings.

They host Waywayseecappo next Friday. Then head to the Arena Complex the following night to play the Wolverines. Neepawa and Dauphin then have a home-and-home to wrap up the preseason. On September 9, the Kings head to Souris to play the Titans.

Two days later, Dauphin hosts Neepawa on September 11. 

Kromm expects a high-paced and high-tempo team.

"I think we're going to work hard. We're going to compete. Guys are going to play physical and heavy," offered Kromm. "A brand of hockey that everyone is familiar with. The teams that have success are the ones that play aggressively every night. Not scared to take risks. An exciting style of play to watch."
