The Lakeshore Regional Wellness Centre in Ashern opened their doors on September 27th of last year, after a lot of work was put in to make the place more welcoming. Fast forward to last Friday, where they welcomed their 10,000th visitor.
Tim Cameron, Lakeshore Regional Wellness Commission Past President, said it's a lot more visitors than they expected in just over a year, but it's a very welcome surprise.
"We were very very surprised, it was the former Ashern Curling Rink, and we converted it into a wellness centre when the curling rink closed it's doors...took us about 8 years to get this into operation, and we opened a year ago last September, and so to get 10,000 in our first year, we were quite surprised, we knew it was going to be popular," said Cameron.
The Lakeshore Regional Wellness Centre has come a long way from just being a curling rink. They offer a wide variety of programs for all ages and groups, including pickleball, court shuffleboard, and special events like trivia. Cameron said this success isn't going to slow them down - if anything, it'll push them to keep finding more ways to serve the community.
Running some quick math, the Lakeshore Regional Wellness Centre averaged around 25 visitors per day since they opened.
"You got a lot of days that are really busy and some that aren't busy, so it averages out to good numbers of people, that's for sure...we are always looking at different programs, whether it be board games or maybe even bingos, we do music trivia, and we do trivia nights and puzzle making, we're always looking for something different, we have play groups for the little ones in the mornings," said Cameron.
The Lakeshore Regional Wellness Centre is almost entirely volunteer run. For information on how you can get involved, you can email This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it..
