Cash McCallum got on a roll playing in the junior sixth flight consolation as the Tamarack Tournament has come to a close for another year.

The Dauphin junior who continues to improve his game won two straight matches to win the flight. His final win was 3&2.

Quinten Fisk, also of Dauphin won the sixth flight on the championship side.

Regan Hedley won on the consolation side in the men's second flight while Jake Wiens won on the consolation side in the men's third flight.

Mel Graves won the senior men's third flight.

John Tomlinson has completed the week of his life.

After making the fifth flight heading into the matches at the Tamarack, he won his fourth straight match tonight to win a title.

He took down Jerron Kyle today, 3&2.

It’s the first time that Tomlinson has ever won a title.

“It’s pretty awesome, I knew it was possible but it’s something that you can’t really expect to happen,” said Tomlinson after the victory.

Mark Odut played a great loss but came up just short in the final of the 1st flight.

Thomas Scott won his 1st consolation junior championship.

Dean Murray won his consolation match with a dominating performance, 6&5.

Mike Pernarowski won the 3rd flight consolation title in the champion’s men’s division.

The odds of an amateur getting a hole in one on the golf course is roughly 12,500 to 1. The odds of an amateur golfer getting an albatross are roughly 6-million to one. Odds that are astronomical to most yet, the Tamarack Golf Course has brought forward both and there is still action left for perhaps some more.

Earlier this week, Joran Hedley aced the 12th hole for his first-ever hole in one. On Friday morning, Mark Odut made a shot that will forever be right near the top in the history books of the Tamarack Tournament and quite frankly, Manitoba golf history.

Playing in a 1st flight semi-final, Odut won his third straight match with a 1up decision against Chris Knoop which has advanced him to Saturday's final where he will challenge Steven Young.

"I've played with him this week and I know he's an excellent player who is consistent," offered Odut. "It's going to be a solid match and I'll have to play well to get the job done."

A back and forth match against Knoop saw both players throw punches, but it was a shot on the fifth hole that had Knoop in awe and Odut in complete celebration mode. For the first time this week, an albatross was recorded as Odut hit in his second shot from about 185 yards out on the par 5, 5th hole.

"That was a surprise, you never really expect anything like that to happen," said Odut.

Other men's action:

In the 2nd consolation flight, Regan Hedley won his match 6&5 to advance to the finals while Jake Wiens won 2&1 in the 3rd consolation flight.

Juniors:

Hayden Delaloye of Neepawa beat Eric Prokopowich, 1up, to advance to the consolation junior championship flight final. In the 1st flight junior consolation flight, Thomas Scott beat Luke Myhre.

Luke Davidson dominated his match with a 5&4 win in the 5th flight while Quinten Fisk also dominated with a 7&5 win in the 6th flight. In the 6th consolation flight, Cash McCallum downed his opponent, 4&3.

John Tomlinson has been a busy man on the golf course this summer. Playing men's night at the Gilbert Plains Country Club on Tuesday nights alongside Laurie Vrooman, the duo has advanced to the semi-finals on the championship side.

Tomlinson also hit the road earlier this summer where he teed it up at the Minnewasta Golf & Country Club for Golf Manitoba's amateur championships where he went 91-81 to narrowly miss the cut. As the golf season slowly comes to a close, the Dauphinite is playing some of the most consistent and best golf of his life.

Every summer he plays in the Tamarack Tournament and when tomorrow's final day takes place, John will be playing for a title. Starting with qualifying last weekend, Tomlinson shot an 84 in his first round which was followed up with a two-birdie performance which resulted in an 81 in his second round. Tomlinson's 165 total would put him in the 5th flight.

"I thought I played pretty well during those first two rounds," said Tomlinson. "I left some shots out there, but overall, I was pretty pleased with my game."

Going into the 5th flight, John was the 88th overall ranked player and he has caught fire and dominated most of his matches. He opened with a 7&6 win over Mark Chubey which was followed with a 2&1 win over Mitch Kaminsky. Only Brock Potter of Brandon was still in Tomlinson's way of advancing to the final and the Dauphin native made it happen on Friday morning in wonderful conditions at the Clear Lake Golf Course.

John drained five birdies to shoot a 74 and it was the second time he had shot 74 this week. Today's solid performance has put John one win away from winning his first-ever flighted title at the Tamarack which is in its 87th year.

"I'm just staying out of trouble and I think that's always the most important thing," offered Tomlinson. "I'm hitting the greens and making putts when needed, it's just sort of all come together at a great time."

118073302 3379648742074563 6353139223117754676 n 1As in any final, two solid opponents will square off and Saturday's final will present Tomlinson with his stiffest test yet this week. It will also be a battle of Dauphin as John will go up against Jerron Kyle who has had a rollercoaster of a week filled with lots of great shots and extra holes.

Kyle handily won his round of 16 match, 4&3. The two following matches have gone down to the wire and both required more than 18 holes. Jerron beat Dan Cristall in 20 holes on Thursday and on Friday morning, he dispatched of Gerry Gourlay. Tomlinson and Kyle have played together for the past three days so John has been front and centre to watch the wild ride that Jerron has been on.

"He's a nice player and a great guy. I'm happy that he's found a way to get it done," said Tomlinson.

Keeping the ball in the fairway, hitting greens, and making putts have worked so far for Tomlinson and he says the key to success on Saturday is the same thing.

"It's going to be a tough match, there's no doubt about that," ended Tomlinson. "I'm just looking forward to getting out there, playing my best and we'll see what happens."

Manitoba Public Health has put the Prairie Mountain Health Region into the "orange" risk category which means starting on Monday, group sizes will be reduced to 10 individuals for both indoor and outdoor settings.

Masks will also be mandatory for indoor public places, as well as any public gatherings.

The Rosebowl men's match play tournament is back at the Neepawa Golf and Country Club on September 5-6-7. This year's event will be the 58th annual and it's a tournament that features golfers from across the province.

"This is a very fun event, everyone who plays continues to come back year after year," said Landon Cameron, General Manager. "We're looking forward to hosting it once again coming up in a few week's time."

The best part about the tournament is you can be a golfer of any skill level. You will be put in a flight alongside golfers who are the same calibre as you which makes it a fair challenge for all. It's just $115 which guarantees you two matches and a steak supper. The first round is on Saturday followed by one on Sunday and if you win that match, you'll get an additional match on Monday.

So whether you're a scratch golfer or someone who barely plays, the Rosebowl tournament is for you.

"I just took an entry for a guy that's a +2 handicap and I took another guy who shoots like 115," ended Cameron. "You get in a group of eight guys that shoot around the same scores. It's just who gets hot on that specific day."

The Manitoba Junior Hockey League announced on Wednesday night that the 2020-2021 regular season would begin on Friday, October 9.

This news puts an end to months of uncertainty. Other leagues across the country have announced significant delays. The BCHL plan to begin play on December 1, the AJHL has announced a delay as have leagues in Ontario.

The SJHL has plans to begin on October 9 as well, however; they have not received provincial health approval as of today.

Barry Wolff, head coach, and general manager of the Swan Valley Stampeders had this to say on the news.

"We're definitely excited here, it's great news," he said. "It’s not only us but the community as well. I know the news just came out, but everyone is so excited, our office is busy with people coming in to get their tickets for the season."

The league has said that teams can hold training camps beginning on Friday, September 18. That means in less than one month, 34 hopeful athletes will hit the ice with the goal of making the Stampeders roster for the upcoming season.

"We're going to have to trim out some guys that were planning on coming, but they won't get that chance because we're only allowed 34," added Wolff. "We're expecting things to be extremely competitive. I think everyone has to keep in mind that no one really makes a team until January 10."

The Stampeders Hockey School begins on Monday inside of the Centennial Arena. That will run through next Friday and there will also be a conditioning camp.

"It really is business as usual right now and will be moving forward," ended Wolff. "We'll continue to talk to guys and recruit guys."

The Dauphin Kings and Swan Valley Stampeders will officially hit the ice to begin the 2020/2021 Manitoba Junior Hockey League season on Friday, October 9.

Since early June, the league has worked with Hockey Canada, Hockey Manitoba, Sport Manitoba, and Manitoba Public Health Authorities to develop comprehensive Return-to-Play Guidelines to assure all players, fans, staff, and communities can return to play and watch the game we love in today's new normal.

Kevin Saurette, Commissioner of the MJHL had this to say.

“On behalf of the MJHL Board of Governors and with the support of Sport Manitoba and approval by the Hockey Manitoba Board of Directors, we are excited to share that MJHL Hockey will be returning to the province in October” shared Commissioner, Kevin Saurette. “We believe our thoroughly provincially vetted MJHL Return to Play – Phase II Guidelines will provide the MJHL, all member teams, players, staff, officials, volunteers, stakeholders, fans and communities with the best position to return to and enjoy hockey in a safe, structured and responsible manner in accordance with all necessary public health and facility guidelines."

A comprehensive look at the MJHL's Return-to-Play Guidelines can be seen here.

MJHL training camps can begin on September 18 with no more than 34 players taking part and teams are able to play up to three exhibition games. Games involving out-of-province teams are not permitted.

"It is a very exciting and with it, this allows direction for everyone involved in the MJHL community," ended Saurette. "So many people have been waiting for so long for this announcement and it's great that we were able to finalize a day.

This season's schedule will be modified to stop the risk of spread or potential contact between multiple teams. A full schedule will be released in the coming weeks.

Players, staff, and officials are required to wear face masks while entering/exiting and within the arena for MJHL sanctioned activities while not on the ice. In addition, players and staff must wear face masks while travelling to and from games. This includes while teams are on the bus, entering/exiting restaurants, and hotels.

Fans are strongly encouraged to wear face masks while in any MJHL facility.
