22 months, that's how long Cameron Campbell had to wait to get back on the track to compete in chuckwagon and chariot races. Almost two years had passed since he was last on the track until his return which was last weekend.
Campbell, from Kinosota, made his way to the James Smith Cree Nation as he was officially back on the track doing what he loves.
"I was a little nervous when I first started off because it had been so long," said Campbell. "Once the horses took off going fast, it all came back to me and it felt amazing."
Competing with Team Ahmo 279, Campbell led the team as they won the dash for cash event, the team's first win in more than 22 months. Cameron says winning the race meant everything to him and he will never forget that moment that he shared with his family and friends.
"One of my best friends that I used to be a jockey for, he passed away, and I was supposed to be a pallbearer at his funeral but the weather held me back from going," said Campbell. "To win the race really put the icing on the cake, what a huge honour for me."
Campbell's busy stretch of racing continues this weekend as he competes at the Carberry Fair and Family Fun Days. Fresh off a win, Cameron is looking forward to getting back to action with his team. The event will also be the team's first competition in Manitoba since before the pause that lasted nearly two years. And while he leads the team, Cameron knows he's not the only one.
"I always think that there's not only my mind out there, but there is five," said Campbell. "There's me and the four horses. You just hope that everyone is in sync like a fine-tuned motor."
Following this weekend, Team Ahmo 279 is off to Yorkton next weekend for another event.

The curling season is underway in the province and it's off to a fantastic start for Zoey Terrick of McCreary. Playing in the Morris MJCT event, the team rallied off four straight wins to earn a title in their first bonspiel of the season.
Terrick says it was incredible just being back on the ice, after only playing in a couple of events last year. They started off their spiel with a 4-3 win over Team Ogg and they followed that up with a 6-3 win against Team Devers.
To wrap up their round-robin, Team Terrick dispatched Team Wahl, 6-4, which earned them a berth in the final against Team Ogg. Trailing 2-0 after two ends, Team Terrick turned up the heat in the third end by scoring four and they never looked back in a 6-4 victory.
"It felt really good. I wasn't expecting to do this well, we didn't even get to practice before," said Terrick. "We wanted to have fun and it worked out very well for us."
There is one change to the team this season. Makenna Hadway of Dauphin is no longer eligible to play in the U18 age group so Terrick has welcomed Madison Sagert of Minitonas to the team. Although Sagert didn't play this past weekend, Zoey is expecting her to fit in very well with the team when they play their next event.
"We've curled against her a lot and she's a really good player," said Terrick. "We're happy to have her on our team and we're looking forward to the rest of the season."
Around the team, Cassidy Dundas is third and Tessa Terrick plays second.
When it comes to expectations for the rest of the season, Terrick isn't sure what to expect. The team's goal is; however, to advance to the U18 provincials and make some noise against the province's best.

The Parkland Pirates rugby program held a high-performance camp for the last few weeks as the sport continues to make a strong comeback in the region after COVID restrictions halted amateur sports in the province for several months.
For Matthew Zurba, Oliver Dandeneau, Quinnton Shwaluk, William Miner, and Joseph Lopez, the goal of the camp was to prepare to battle against the top U18 rugby players from some parts of the country. The five young men from Dauphin were in Moose Jaw this past weekend taking part in Team Canada's U18 combine after receiving invitations from the coaching staff.
30 players from across the prairies competed for a limited amount of spots in Vancouver where final tryouts will take place in December. Aaron Miner is a coach with the Pirates program and he says it was amazing to see so many local athletes competing in the combine, all of which had the chance to show off their stuff in front of the national coaching staff.
"These five have been leaders on and off the field for years now," said Miner. "You can see how hard they work to stay in shape, even with the COVID break. They've been training hard and they were very deserving of this opportunity."
Aaron, who was in Moose Jaw for the event, says the five Parkland athletes were speechless when they arrived at the facility and despite being under the pressure of playing in front of a national coaching staff and 25 other elite athletes, they performed extremely well.
The five are now back in the Parkland and they will continue training with the Pirates program which as Miner says, is in good hands.
"We've been getting compliments from Rugby Manitoba and Rugby Canada for having one of the biggest youth programs in the province and even across Canada," ended Miner. "It sure felt great to get those. We take a lot of pride in what we do."

Dozens of golfers from the Parkland will be all over the Clear Lake Golf Course this weekend as the Tamarack Tournament gets underway on Saturday morning with qualifying rounds.
The week-long tournament is the longest match play tournament in the province and it attracts golfers from around Manitoba and from around the country. Last year, a golfer from Toronto made the championship final. His hopes of winning the title were dashed by Dustin Dyck of Brandon.
Dustin successfully defended the title he won in 2019 by winning last year's championship and now, he's looking to make it a three-peat as the 2021 event is nearly here.
It's been a busy past week for Dustin as he just got married last week and only got back from his honeymoon a few days ago. During his time away from Brandon, he played the Hecla Island Golf Resort with his wife and posted a 69 in his second round.
He says that was likely his best round of the year as conditions were far from perfect on a golf course that requires precision.
Dyck's first of two qualifying rounds is set for 7:00 a.m. on Saturday off the 10th tee as he aims to make the top 16 that advance to the championship bracket.
"I"m playing pretty well I would say. I was fighting some woes with the driver for a bit, but I feel like I'm starting to clean things up," said Dyck. "I'm hitting it much straighter and I feel good about where my game is right now."
Dustin says he's having a lot more fun on the course this year and his nerves going into this weekend aren't as high. He's not setting any expectations, he just plans on playing as well as he can and the chips will fall where they will. And with less than 24 hours until his first round, the feeling of Christmas is back for the two-time champion.
Dyck says he can't imagine not playing in this tournament.
"For years and years, this has been my favourite week of the year," ended Dyck. "It's almost like a second Christmas, it's just longer. Just being able to be around friends and family and playing a great golf course, I couldn't ask for much more."
As noted above, the Parkland is once again well represented at the event. Here's a list of local players teeing it up.
Men's:
Rob Bouchard, Tyler Carefoot, Steve Desroches, Kody Fawcett, Joran Hedley, Regan Hedley, Dan Keeping, Jerron Kyle, Bart Michaleski, Luke Michaleski, Greg Misener, Darren Ritchie, Jay Thiesen, Jake Wiens, Anthony Wiens, Noah Wiens, Jason Yates, Lawson Yates, and Rylee Zimmer.
