Two Parkland athletes have opportunities to represent Canada.

Team Parkland has named its final Male and Female teams which will compete in this summer’s Power Smart Manitoba Games in Steinbach.

The process began over a year ago with the initial tryouts. Practices continued throughout the summer of 2015, with time being split between Swan River and Dauphin. The teams competed last summer in a soccer festival in Carman, then continued to work through the winter with indoor practices and fitness testing. In April the teams participated in a Regional Indoor Festival at the Subway Soccer Complex at the University of Manitoba.

Training resumed in May and the final tryout occurred during a Regional Festival in Selkirk. Both teams played well with the Girls defeating Kenora 1-0 in their final game of the weekend. The Boys final game of the festival ended in a 1-1 tie, also against a team from Kenora.

Following the Selkirk festival both teams made their final cuts down to the 16 player roster for the Manitoba Games.

Both teams had between twenty and twenty-five players trying out at various points over the year. Some dropped out themselves while others stayed on to the end, giving the coaches some tough choices to make. With the U13 category being predominantly for players born 2003 & 2004, the older players had some advantage in the final selection. However, a few 2005 players will be part of the team representing the region this summer.

The team will continue to train over the next seven weeks and will take part in one final Regional Festival on July 23 & 24 in Portage la Prairie.
