Today is Manitoba Day!
The province of Manitoba was created by The Manitoba Act, which received royal assent on May 12, 1870. On this day in 1966, Manitoba's official flag was dedicated and raised for the first time.
May 12 officially became Manitoba Day in 1968 when the Government of Manitoba recognized the importance of this day.
The Government of Manitoba websites explains how Manitoba was named:
"The name Manitoba originated in the languages of the Aboriginal people who lived on the Prairies and travelled the waters of Lake Manitoba... From Aboriginal name and legend to official title of the province, the evolution of the name Manitoba mirrors the history of the region. At the Lake Manitoba Narrows a strong wind can send waves washing against the limestone rocks of an offshore island. The unique sound from the waves is said to be the Manitou, or Great Spirit (in Ojibway, “Manito-bau”). The legend survives in the Province’s name – Manitoba."
A plaque commemorating its origin is located on the east side of the Lake Manitoba Narrows.
May 12, 2020, marked the 150th anniversary of Manitoba's founding; accordingly, commemorative events, activities, projects, initiatives, and so on were planned to take place throughout 2020 under the banner of Manitoba 150

The Manitoba Government alongside the Vaccine Task Force provided five pharmacies in Manitoba with 100 shots of the Moderna vaccine and the Dauphin Clinic Pharmacy made the list.
They received the shipment of the Moderna vaccine late last week and they wrapped up administering them earlier this week.
Barret Procyshyn says they were pleased to offer the public the Moderna shot and be a part of the five pharmacies that we're able to do so.
"We had a lot of positive feedback from our customers that were coming in to get the vaccine," said Procyshyn. "They couldn't believe how quick and easy it would be. We believe that the pharmacy is a great place to receive your vaccine."
Barret says everyone at DCP is committed to helping in the vaccination push. As of Tuesday afternoon, 45.4% of Manitobans aged 18 and older had received their first dose.
On top of the 100 Moderna shots, the Dauphin Clinic Pharmacy has also administered more than 400 shots of the Astra Zeneca vaccine.
At this point, DCP is waiting for more supply. In the meantime, you can put your name on a waiting list and once they have doses in stock, you will be contacted.
Do keep in mind, this is a pharmacy-only waiting list. A supersite opened earlier this week in Dauphin and you can book an appointment by calling 1-844-626-8222.
Vaccine eligibility currently includes Manitobans aged 24 and older, Indigenous people aged 18 and older, and pregnant women who are 18 and older.

The Dauphin and District Chamber of Commerce held their annual State of the City Address this afternoon.
Executive Director of the Dauphin and District Chamber of Commerce, Stephen Chychota, says the event featured presentations from President and CEO of the Manitoba Chambers of Commerce Chuck Davidson, and Dauphin Mayor Al Dowhan.
“In Al’s presentation, he went through what the city’s been doing for the last little while and what they propose to be doing going forward. He showed some stats on their spending, and the forecast, went into the strategic plan, their climate certification, and the EV charger they recently installed.”
Chychota is looking forward to next month, when they’re holding another virtual address.
“June 8th is our State of the District, something similar to what we did with the cities platform but trying to give the whole region a platform to give a couple highlights from everybody’s perspective. On that we’re going to hear from municipal leaders from across the Parkland, also some partnering organizations with the chamber and other organizations of influence.”

The province is introducing changes to the Employment Standards Code that would allow workers to take a three-hour paid leave to get their COVID-19 vaccinations.
Finance Minister Scott Fielding wants to encourage all Manitobans to get their COVID-19 vaccine as soon as they are eligible.
“Our government is removing barriers so Manitobans can confidently book a COVID-19 vaccination during work hours without fear of losing out on their regular wages.”
The proposed amendments would make it mandatory for employers to let employees have up to three hours of paid leave each time they require a dose of vaccine. The wage rate would be fixed at an employee’s regular wage rate.
The province says employees who need more time to travel to vaccination appointments, or who suffer from vaccine side effects would be allowed to take a longer unpaid leave.

The eligibility to be immunized at a supersite or pop-up clinic has been expanded to include Manitobans aged 24 and older, and indigenous people aged 18 and older.
Eligibility also includes people aged 18 and older who are pregnant, are a client of Community Living disABILITY Services, or work in any healthcare setting including outpatient settings.
Eligibility for the AstraZeneca/Covishield vaccine includes individuals aged 40 or older and people aged 30 to 39 with priority health conditions.

A 14-year-old boy was not injured after an altercation with another boy on Monday night in Dauphin.
Around 6:15 p.m., Dauphin RCMP received a report that a 14-year-old boy had sprayed another 14-year-old with bear spray at the skate park.
The suspect has been identified, but he has not been arrested as of yet. The victim was taken to the hospital for examination but was not injured.

COVID Enforcement Officials handed out 60 tickets to Manitobans last week.
Fifty of the tickets issued were to individuals for various offenses, nine were issued for not wearing a mask in an indoor public place, and one fine was issued to a Manitoba business.
Officials advise that 47 of the tickets handed to individuals were in relation to holding private gatherings, and three were for failing to self-isolate.
Officials continue to follow up all large gatherings and rallies and advise an additional 32 $1,296 tickets were issued in relation to rallies. This includes two tickets from the Winkler rally on May 1, eight tickets from The Forks rally on May 1, and 22 tickets from the Law Courts rally on May 3.
Fine amounts totalled $72,482 last week.
The province has increased the amount of fines for those that continue to break public health orders:
Fines for individuals who have received two or more tickets for failing to wear a mask have been increased to $486 from $298.
Fines for individuals who have received two or more tickets for other penalties under the orders have been increased to $2,542 from $1,296.
The penalty for failing to pay a ticket in the required timeframe (default conviction) has been doubled to $100 from $50.

A burn ban is in effect for Mossey River Municipality.
The Municipality asks that residents refrain from open fires.
Only crop residue burn permits will be issued.

A man from Ebb and Flow First Nation is facing multiple charges after walking around the community with a firearm on Saturday.
Ste Rose RCMP say they responded around 3:15 p.m. and quickly located a man standing on Northeast Road with what appeared to be a firearm.
The officers contained the scene until the RCMP Emergency Response Team arrived on the scene, and more officers from Ste Rose du Lac.
23-year-old Jacob Levasseur was apprehended and is facing multiple charges.
Nobody was injured, and the investigation is ongoing.

The Parkland Regional Library is hosting its virtual Stargazing Event tomorrow.
This online event is taking place over Zoom at 7:00 p.m.
Director of Parkland Regional Library, Alison Moss says the event is an opportunity to explore the night sky with Alberta author, Joan Marie Galat. Alison says Joan Marie Galat is going to weave storytelling into space exploration.
“Not only is it the tips and tricks of how to locate different stars, but she’s going to take us down the path a little further and provide a road map or rather a star map to help us find some of the more complicated constellations in the sky.”
Alison says the event is being offered across all 23 branches in the Parkland.
“I hope we have a good group of people who can take part in this. That’s the one thing that COVID-19 has brought us, we do these programming events and geography doesn’t matter as much as it used to.”

The real estate market in the Parkland was much more active in the first four months of 2021, compared to the first four months of 2020.
In 2020, the total house sales in Dauphin was 26 from January to the end of April. In the first four months of this year, the number of homes sold has risen to 38, an increase of 12.
Including the entire Parkland in the first four months of last year, 44 residential properties were sold.
On the rise:
From January 1 to April 30, 2021, 55 properties were sold, an increase of 11 from the previous year in the same time frame. Colette Carefoot, Managing Broker and Owner of RE/MAX Parkland realty, says it appears that families are more comfortable purchasing homes now.
"It was scary for everyone at the start with COVID and all of the restrictions that were put in place," said Carefoot. "Now that we've lived in it for more than a year combined with the strict regulations that have been set up for us, we're certainly seeing more action this spring."
And if you're looking to get into a home of your own in the Parkland, now could be a perfect time. Kathy Stokotelny, Broker with Action Realty Ltd., says with the interest rate in a great spot, getting into your forever home or even just a starter home could come at a much better price.
"We just want to tell people not to be worried when they want to look at a property," said Stokotelny. "With the interest rate where it is, this is a great time to be a buyer, it's the time to be in the market."
Both Kathy and Colette agreed that they expect home sales in the region to continue trending in an upward direction after a great start to 2021.
"Anyone who is in a position to buy, I feel like they're trying to take advantage of interest rates," ended Carefoot. "
