Minnedosa Thanksgiving Display Burnt

Monday was not a happy Thanksgiving for those involved with Minnedosa Tourism.

Investigators are looking into a Monday morning fire that destroyed a Thanksgiving display set up by the organization to encourage people to take photos.

Minnedosa Fire Crews were called to Tanner's Crossing Park at around 9:25 am Monday morning to find the display and picnic tables all on fire.

The fire was put out before it could spread to nearby trees and potentially to nearby homes.

The display was set up just last Friday by volunteers and tourism board members, with hopes that families could use the display as a background for photos that Minnedosa Tourism asked to be shared to their Facebook page.

The fire is believed to have been deliberately set, and Minnedosa Fire Department has asked that anyone who has information on the fire to contact the Minnedosa RCMP at 204-867-2916, or to remain anonymous, call Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477 (TIPS).

A Neepawa man accused of repeatedly harassing his ex-wife and their children has been denied bail in a Brandon court.

The 42-year-old man, who is not being identified in order to protect the identity of the victims, is facing charges for harassing phone calls, mischief, criminal harassment, and 11 counts of failing to comply with court orders.

The judge denied the bail request because they thought the accused could not be trusted to leave the woman alone.

The charges have yet to be proven in court.

The R.M. of Dauphin is advising motorists of a road and bridge closure for Tuesday, October 15th.

They say maintenance repairs will be done to the Aberson Bridge, which is located on Road 142 North, which is also known as Russell Trail, between Road 113W and 114W.

Motorists are advised they will need to take different routes around the construction area for Tuesday only.

Here is a list of what businesses and services are open in Dauphin on this Thanksgiving Monday.

The Dauphin Marketplace Mall is open until 5 today, with both Walmart and Safeway staying open until 8 pm tonight.

The Dauphin Co-op food store is open until 8 tonight while the Co-op Gas bars on Main Street and Mountain Road are open untiol 9:30 tonight.

Extra Foods is open until 9 pm tonight.

Liquor Mart in Dauphin is open until 6 pm.

The Kin Aquatic Centre at the Parkland Rec Complex is open today, with public swimming taking place from 1;30 to 4:30.

Pine Creek First Nations Chief Derek Nepinak has provided a video update on Facebook regarding the construction of the Petro Canada-Burger King station that will be located just off Main Street South in Dauphin.

"The tank pit is roughed in. It is a double-walled tank that is going into the site to make sure that there are no leaks into the underground once they are put in. The pumps are roughed in, as well as the foundation for our Petro Canada/Burger King site. We are very excited about this development here, it has been years in the making."

The project is a joint venture between Pine Creek and Ebb & Flow First Nations.

Nepinak adds this is the first step of work to be done on that site.

"Behind (that site) we have a few acres of reserve land that is available for development and another 65 -70 acres behind that which is set aside for further development from our community. We are very excited about what we can do here. This is about urban economic growth and bringing returns back to the well-being of our community."

No timeline was provided for the completion of the project.

Nepinak says the multi-million dollar investment will return many millions of dollars to the communities over the next few decades.

The provnce is now accepting nominations for its Excellence in Education awards for the 2024-25 school year.

The awards recognize exceptional achievements in education in several categories, including teaching excellence, outstanding new teacher, outstanding team collaboration, outstanding school leader, and the Premier's award for excellence in education.

Nominees must be educators who hold a valid, permanent Manitoba teaching certificate and work directly with kindergarten to Grade 12 students in a school setting daily.

December 5th is the nomination deadline, after which they will be reviewed by a selection committee that includes representatives from across the education sector and Manitoba Education and Early Childhood Learning.

The winners will be announced and recognized during a ceremony next spring.

The Dauphin Neighbourhood Renewal Corporation's garage sale is fast approaching.

It is set for October 22nd to 26th inside their Community Centre on 3rd Avenue Northwest,

Donations of items are now being accepted, and DNRC Executive Director Amanda Novak says the response so far has been great.

"We are accepting lightly and gently used items. No clothing, but gently used items from your garage or your home - utensils, kitchen stuff, items like that. And we are accepting donations until October 16th. So if you are in your garage or your shed or you are cleaning your kitchen and if you have items that you would like to donate, because all of the proceeds (from the garage sale) will be going to the Dauphin Food Bank."

Novak says having a facility like that is a huge benefit for their organization.

"At one time we did hold the meal program there and we were able to serve a lot of meals to those in need. Now, we are focused on building capacity in other organizations that are doing that. So that is why we are helping the food bank. Their numbers are skyrocketing and we want to support them and their cause as much as possible."

Donations can be dropped off at the DNRC office.

One of three people charged in relation to a trio of armed robberies in Dauphin this past March has admitted her guilt in court.

24-year-old Mallory Catcheway of Brandon pled guilty in Dauphin court this week to charges of forcible entry and assault.

She was sentenced to time already served in custody and 18 months of probation.

Dauphin's Culture Days continue with a duo of activities this Saturday.

Jean-Louis Guillas, Culture Days coordinator, is excited for the Art and Pottery show that will be at the Waston tomorrow from 10-4.

"Dauphin's becoming really a hotbed for crafters and makers of all kinds including some really talented and fantastic potters. they do everything from everyday pieces, cups mugs and plates, and even creative pieces"

Guillas also mentions that both the Dauphin Art Group and the Dauphin Pottery and Ceramics Club are open to new members if you are looking to learn a new skill,

This showcase of talented sculptors and artists will be followed later in the night with a musical duo show.

Russel's 51st annual Beef and Barley Festival has been partying all week long, but the weekend is about to get wild.

Beef and Barley Chair Tyler Kilkenny says it's been a great week so far, as festivities started on Tuesday.

He's looking forward to the weekend events, which include cribbage and dodgeball tournaments, socials, and the Charity Buckin' Rodeo.

The rodeo features costumed riders battling a mechanical bull, with their sponsors going towards charity.

"There's so many generations that come to the charity and the social and all the events. it's very community-minded, where you run into people you don't get to see all the time. The actual Bucking Rodeo has become just amazing. It's so much fun to watch the costumes and the fun that everyone has. You get people from 18 years old to 80 years old out to enjoy it."

Sunday also features the Russel Lions car Rally.
