Manitoba is preparing to join other provinces and increase the tax on vaping products next year as a way to discourage their use, especially among young people.
Premier Wab Kinew Views it as a way to discourage especially young people from picking up a vape.
This excise tax could also bring in an estimated 11 million dollars, which would go towards antismoking and anti-vaping programs.
on top of the federal tax, The combined tax would see manufacturers and importers paying $2 per two milliliters of vaping liquids for the first 10 milliliters, then $2 per 10 milliliters for volumes above that.
The vape tax is one of a handful of tax changes slated for Manitoba in 2024, as the gas tax and Income tax cuts will also be taking place on January first.

New court dates have been set for three people, arrested following a violent incident at a Minitonas home and a search of the same home.
On August 2nd, Swan River Mounties say an armed robbery occurred at a home, in which a man was held against his will by five people, and robbed with a firearm, sustaining minor injuries.
Police searched the same home on August 7th, arresting three people, and seizing quantities of crystal meth, cocaine, heroin, MDMA, drug paraphernalia, ammunition, and stolen property from the earlier robbery.
27-year-old Nikko Guiboche of Minitonas, 27-year-old Dawson Kozminski-Ursel, of Teulon, and 37-year-old Tanelle Mohr of Minitonas, will return to Swan River Court on January 3rd.

As we are in the midst of the giving season, the Dauphin Neighbourhood Renewal Corporation is hoping local businesses, groups, or individuals will help them extend the life of their hot meal program.
Jason Gilmore is a Community liaison with the DNRC, and he hopes to continue feeding the people in Dauphin who need it.
"It's funded through the Red Cross, and it was a one-time opportunity to receive that funding and we can't reapply. with the funding depleted somewhat the Hot meal program as it stands right now won't be running beyond the end of January."
Gilmore says they have served around 13,000 meals this year between their breakfast and supper hot meal programs.
An arrangement with the Dauphin First United Church allows that organization to accept donations and issue tax receipts on behalf of the DNRC.
If you are writing a cheque, you are asked to put "DNRC Hot Meal Program" in the memo line.

The Manitoba government is returning some stolen funds to seniors after 14 people were targeted by scams.
Investigations into this scam found that 2 Ontario residents had stolen nearly 150 thousnad dollars in whats known as "the grandparent scam" were criminals pose as a grandchild who is in legal trouble and needs money for legal action.
In the RCMP's veiwing of surveillance footage, the two suspects were identified and arrested, and roughly 75 thousand dollars of the stolen funds were seized..
justice minister Matt Weibe announced recently that through the criminal forfeiture act, this recovered money will be going back to the victims immediately.
Minister Weibe also shares a warning, noting "scams like these can happen to anyone,The people committing crimes like these can be quite convincing and will play on the emotions of the victim, which makes this even more upsetting."

The NDP government has floated the idea of a new bill that would look to ban the replacement of workers on strikes or lockouts.
This new bill aims to promote fair collective bargaining and minimize labor disputes, but not everyone is in favor of this.
The Manitoba Chamber of Commerce is calling the idea unfair, saying it will force businesses to close during strikes or lockouts.
Chuck Davidson, President of the Chamber says the province already has a fair process in place that allows both employers and unions to seek binding arbitrations in the event of a strike or a lockout.
The bill is currently in its early stages of drafting, so there are no firm details on if it will go through out not yet.

Christmas Eve is right around the corner, and the North American Aerospace Defence Command (NORAD) is gearing up for an annual tradition.
since 1955, NORAD has dedicated its services each Christmas Eve to keep tabs on the big man in the red suit after a child called an unlisted number trying to reach the North Pole.
For the past 68 years, NORAD has run this program to keep the mystery of Christmas abound, and in recent years has even made a web page to track Santa Christmas as well.

Captain Scott Swagler is posted in Alaska this holiday season, and he's part of the team making this magic happen. he has some recommendations for all the kids and parents who're excited for Santa to come.
"We don't know Santa's path every year, but we do track him. What we do know, is that historically is that Santa tends to visit houses between 9pm and midnight. so if it's getting close to 9pm, kids need to be getting to bed"

Two people were injured as a result of a single-vehicle crash near Fork River Thursday night.
Winnipegosis RCMP were called to the scene about 4 km North of Fork River on Highway 20 just before 4 pm on Thursday.
Mounties say the vehicle was headed northbound when it hit the ditch and rolled.
The 69-year-old male driver and 68-year-old female passenger suffered minor injuries as a result of the crash.
Police say alcohol was not a factor.

The city has announced its holiday garbage and recycling collection schedule for the next two weeks.
There will be no garbage or recycling collection on both Christmas Day and Boxing Day, with regular service resuming on Wednesday for day one residents.
Days two and three of garbage and recycling collection will be next Thursday and Friday, with day four collection not taking place until January 2nd, as there will be no service on New Year's Day.
The city of Dauphin says regular collection days will resume as of January 9th.

Mossey River Municipality will hold its annual Christmas Tree Lighting event tonight (Friday) in Winnipegosis.
Santa Claus will be in attendance for the event, which will also include free hot dogs, hot chocolate, and caroling.
It is set to take place from 6 to 8 pm on the Boulevard in Winnipegosis.

A project in Shoal Lake is one of three to receive funding from a new grant program through Sunrise Credit Union.
The Shoal Lake Aeration Project hopes to revitalize the lake by adding an aeration system to help alleviate excessive algae growth over the past few years.
Organized by the For the Love of Shoal Lake organization, the project not only aims to protect its ecosystems in the lake but also return Shoal Lake as a popular destination for anglers.
The project will receive $15,000 from Sunrise through its Building Communities Grant Program, which was first announced last month.
Community betterment is the goal of the grant program, which will have two application intake periods per year.
Other projects being funded in this initial intake are the Holland Outdoor Arena and the Elkhorn Ice Plant project.
