Flooding At Brandon Regional Health Centre

Thunderstorms with heavy rain on Sunday have resulted in flooding at the basement level at Brandon Regional Health Centre (General Centre).

Several departments were impacted, including the pharmacy, materials management, medical device reprocessing (MDR) and nutrition services.

Scheduled surgeries and endoscopy procedures are cancelled for today, as a result of water damage in the medical device reprocessing area.

In a release from Prairie Mountain Health, we learned that staff worked through the night to clean up the water and minimize the damage. Those clean up efforts will continue today.

On Sunday afternoon, Manitoba Infrastructure’s Hydrologic Forecast Centre issued an advisory, saying the next 3 to 4 days could bring up to 75 to 100 millimetres of rain — adding that areas in southwest Manitoba — including Virden and Brandon — could see up to 175 millimetres of rain during this time.

Yesterday’s thunderstorms and heavy rain have caused the RM of Oakview, west of Minnedosa, to declare a state of emergency.

The RM, which includes Oak River, Cardale, and Rapid City, saw somewhere in the region of 150 mm of rain get dumped into the area.

Environment Canada is even trying to confirm if a tornado touched down in the Rapid City area.

A home in Rapid City saw the force of the storm; extensive damage was done to the inside and outside of the home, and dozens of trees have been uprooted.

According to Scott Kehler with Weatherlogics, the amount of rain received in Brandon Sunday evening is equivalent to the total amount of precipitation that Brandon received from January 17 to June 27 this year.

Highway 10, south of the Highway 45 junction is closed because of flooding.

In Dauphin, water pooled up in several streets and ditches.

The Vermillion Park Campground in Dauphin officially reopens today, but Dauphin Recreation Services say the campground will be operating at a limited capacity for now.

Rec Services ask that only self-sufficient campers book reservations for the time being, as they are only keeping washroom and shower facilities open from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m.

An economic development meeting happened on Friday afternoon in Dauphin, after being delayed for months because of the COVID situation.

Local organizations met with Economic Development Minister Ralph Eichler, alongside ‘Team Manitoba’ partners — namely Manitoba’s new Rural Economic Development Corporation, North Forge Technology Exchange, World Trade Centre Winnipeg and Travel Manitoba.

Dauphin Chamber Executive Director, Stephen Chychota was also there for the Parkland regional economic development meeting. He tells CKDM that things went well.

“It was excellent to have that opportunity with so many different departments across the province, and getting to meet with ‘Team Manitoba’.”

Chychota says the meeting focused on the economic strengths of the Parkland, and what the region has to offer the province.

He says local organizations highlighted some areas with good potential, such as tourism, and also animal & plant protein production.

What can we expect to come out of this meeting in the near future? Well, Chychota says there’s now some behind the scenes work that will take place to try and make some concrete plans going forward.

“It will be interesting to see the action items that come out of this meeting, and try to keep those dialogues with the province open, and make some really big things happen for the Parkland and for Dauphin.”

7:00 p.m. Update: According to witnesses, a tornado touched down 2 or 3 times this afternoon after 4, southwest of Minnedosa in the Rapid City area.

At 3:38 p.m., Environment Canada issued a tornado warning for the following areas:

R.M. of Minto-Odanah incl. Minnedosa and Moore Park
R.M. of Oakview incl. Oak River and Rapid City

Meteorologists are tracking a severe thunderstorm that is possibly producing a tornado.

Doppler radar continues to indicate very strong rotation on a thunderstorm 10 km south of Rapid City. This thunderstorm is moving northeast at 40 km/h.

They advise the public to take cover if threatening weather approaches.

A flood watch and high water advisory have been issued for the southwestern, western and central regions of the province.

Manitoba Infrastructure’s Hydrologic Forecast Centre issued the advisory Sunday afternoon, saying the next 3 to 4 days could bring up to 75 to 100 millimetres of rain.

The advisory from the Forecast Centre also says areas in southwest Manitoba — including Virden and Brandon — could see up to 175 millimetres of rain during this time.

There is potential for overland flooding in low-lying areas, and small streams and creeks.

Most major rivers, including the Assiniboine and Souris rivers, are expected to remain within their banks at most locations.

The total number of confirmed and probable cases remains at 322.

The total number of confirmed and probable cases is now 322.

9:00 p.m. update: The severe thunderstorm warning has ended in Wasagaming and Riding Mountain.

7:25 p.m. update: The severe thunderstorm warning has now ended for Dauphin and Gilbert Plains. There is currently a severe thunderstorm warning for the R.M. of Lakeshore and Wasagaming.

6:12 p.m. update: The severe thunderstorm watch has now been upgraded to a warning in some areas.

At 6:07 p.m., Environment Canada said the thunderstorm was near Ashville and moving northeast.

The warning is in effect for:

R.M. of Dauphin incl. Sifton and Valley River

Gilbert Plains Mun. incl. Ashville

The warning has ended for Grandview, Ethelbert, Roblin, and Riding Mountain.

Today's warm weather has brought a severe thunderstorm watch to the Parkland.

The conditions are favourable for severe thunderstorm development that could produce strong wind gusts, large hail, and heavy rain.

There's also a potential for tornadoes in severe thunderstorms.

Environment Canada says lighting kills and injures Canadians every year and advises, when thunder roars, go indoors.
