The Dauphin Bible Camp is hosting an Outdoor Family Fun Day Sunday afternoon from 1 to 4. Camp Director Andrew Sevigny says they have some great activities planned.

"We have our toboggan hill open, and we have a skating rink here available, as well as, we're gonna do this fun thing for younger kids, where our wranglers are gonna pull them behind their horse on a sled, and just go for a little horse ride in that way."

The day is free to attend, and Sevigny says you just need to bring your skates or toboggan, whatever you plan on using.

"It's just a day aimed towards families to come out and enjoy camp and get people introduced to camp before we start looking towards the summer."

After a memorable 40-year career, Ron Hedley retired as CEO of Fusion Credit Union on June 1, 2020.

Although Ron remains busy with the many groups and organizations he is a part of in Dauphin, Hedley says he is enjoying retirement and the opportunities that he and his wife can now take part in.

While it has been more than two years since Ron left Fusion Credit Union, his legacy lives on as he recently received the Order of Merit from Manitoba Credit Unions. The Manitoba Credit Union Order of Merit recognizes individuals who demonstrate a significant commitment to the credit union system at the local, provincial, national and international levels.

"It's such a great award to receive," said Hedley. "It comes from your peers and it's always nice to be recognized like that."

During Ron’s tenure at Fusion, he was instrumental in promoting environmental sustainability initiatives including loans for solar panel projects and promoting Dauphin’s first ‘net zero’ home. He carried the same philosophy to the wider credit union system by volunteering on several boards and committees at the provincial level. Also during his time, Fusion Credit Union received some impressive accolades including being named one of Manitoba's Top Employers. He also introduced the Full Circle Fund to support community groups and projects.

"It was a fun ride. I had a board of directors, staff, and management that were so awesome, it was great going to work every day," ended Hedley. "I truly enjoyed going to work with the wonderful people that I had the chance to.

Ron also wants to thank his wife and his two sons for their amazing support over the years.

"I really appreciate everything they have always done for me and how much they have supported me," ended Hedley.

There were ten people from the Dauphin constituency awarded the Queen Elizabeth II Platinum Jubilee Medal in Brandon this week.

Dauphin MLA Brad Michaleski was part of the selection process, and he says the most difficult part was narrowing it down to just ten people.

"We literally have thousands of people that do so much good work. You know the medal is to recognize Manitoba's generosity, community and volunteer service, and reconciliation, so when we look at that, there are literally thousands of people across the constituency that qualify for this honour."

Michaleski says he tried to make sure the entire constituency was well represented through the honours.

"I did try to make the selections based on different walks of life, different experiences, you know people that have helped people in different circumstances. Try to get a wide range of people and interests. Our region is just so blessed with fantastic people that it was tough to choose."

The local recipients are:

  • Michelle Mazurkewich
  • Brian Damsgaard
  • Jim Perchaluk
  • Tony Safronetz
  • Al Gray
  • Kay Slobodzian
  • Alex Lytwyn
  • Carole Shankaruk
  • Rodney Juba
  • Bev Harvey

You can watch the full ceremony from earlier this week on the province's YouTube page.

A planned power outage to Grandview is underway as of 10 o'clock this morning in order to get rid of ice from power lines.

Hydro crews will create a controlled short circuit in the lines to melt the ice until it falls off. How long the outage lasts depends on weather conditions and how quickly the ice melts.

The risk of not doing this is the weight of the ice can snap wood poles and bring lines down, which would cause a longer outage to repair the damage.

In an email to CKDM, Manitoba Hydro says, "We know this is frustrating to our customers in Grandview, and our goal is to minimize the interruption and do this work as quickly and safely as possible."

City of Dauphin crews will be working to repair a water main leak on Jackson Street starting tomorrow morning (Thursday, Jan. 19th) at 7 a.m. Jackson will be closed In front of St. Paul's Personal Care home (between Oak Avenue and Pioneer Avenue), and all traffic will need to detour around the area.

The Manitoba RCMP has arrested and charged 46-year-old Melvin Catcheway with Manslaughter, in relation to an ongoing homicide investigation on Skownan First Nation. Catcheway was remanded into custody and appeared in Swan River Court Today.

On Saturday, the Winnipegosis RCMP responded to a report of an assault at a residence on Skownan First Nation. When police arrived on the scene they found the body of a 68-year-old victim deceased.

RCMP Major Crime Services continue to investigate.

28-year-old Thunder Gott, who is from Sapotaweyak Cree Nation and was last seen on boxing day, still has not been found.

Swan River RCMP, as well as concerned family and community members have been searching by vehicle, snowmobile, and foot, but nothing has turned up so far. Therefore, efforts are being ramped up with the use of a helicopter.

Thanks to the support of Manitoba Keewatinowi Okimakanak (MKO), a Sapotaweyak councillor will depart Swan River in a helicopter today to search areas near Birch River.

Birch River, which is roughly 50 kilometers north of Swan River, is an area of focus because searchers had spoken to a couple who had picked up Gott and drove him to the town junction.

Anyone who may have information that could help investigators can contact the Swan River RCMP at 204-734-4686.

A Dauphin family was left in shock after a bullet came through their kitchen window.

Sam Panko says she had just pulled up to her house when she first heard the gunshots but wasn't sure exactly what they were.

"So I pulled up from daycare pickup, and the neighbours were loading something into the garbage, but I thought they were loading something into a flatbed, so I heard the shots, and I just thought, that can't be gunshots, that's ridiculous, they must be loading metal into something at it's making that noise."

Panko said it was a lot higher pitched than what she thought a gunshot would sound like.

"My gut instinct told me to stay in the car for a minute, so I closed the door and just kept the kids in the car."

After some time had passed Panko wrote it off as no big deal and brought the kids inside.

"I started getting the kids unloaded and I noticed there was glass everywhere. It was all the way into the dining room, almost all the way into the living room, and I just assumed the cats knocked something off the counter."

Panko put her kids away from the glass to clean it up while trying to figure out what had caused such a mess.

"I was so confused. And then our dog flash barked at me, so I looked up, and I saw the hole, and my stomach just dropped."

The lord is so so good! Last night was one of the scariest nights of my life, but it could have been so so much worse....

Panko dropped everything she was doing and packed the kids up to bring them to her sisters-in-law.

"I called the police as soon as I got in the car. I dropped the Kids off, came back, and the police were already here. I must have left the door open because they were already in the house when I got home, and they were looking for the bullet and checking things out."

The police were at the house all evening, and Panko says they were so helpful.

"They were great, they brought in everybody they could. They brought in the ballistic specialists to see if they could figure out where the bullet went because they still can't find it. They were phenomenal, really easy to work with."

Panko says it could've been a very different night had they not been behind a slow driver on the drive home.

"I told my husband, I said where the bullet went through the window is where I would've been standing making a snack if we were home five minutes earlier."

Panko says they haven't heard anything from the police yet, and they are still searching around the house for the missing bullet.

Early this afternoon a car slid through the stop sign and into the ditch at the end of Road 151 North, about 8km north of Dauphin near the Valley River Highway(Route 362).

Dauphin Fire Department Chief Cam Abrey was on the scene and says that there were no injuries. He wants to remind people to drive to conditions, as many roads in the area are still very icy due to the recent freezing rain.

Provincial crews are out on the roads putting down sand to help with the ice. For the most up-to-date road conditions, check out the Parkview Auto-Glass road conditions tab.
