More Cases Of West Nile Virus In PMHR

There have been two new confirmed cases of West Nile Virus in the Prairie Mountain Health Region.

Three more new cases are from the Interlake region.

The total number of West Nile cases has now increased to seven in Manitoba.

The potential risk for human exposure to West Nile virus is high right now and could stay like that for a couple weeks.

Blue-green algae blooms show up during the late parts of summer and can be quite harmful to people.

Blue-green algae bloom typically looks blue green but in some cases will be olive green or even red.

If you find algae bloom, avoid making any contact with it.

Blue-green algae bloom is actually bacteria that can be harmful to people but lethal to pets and other animals.

Being exposed to blue-green algae bloom can lead to a number of different symptoms.

Reactions to the algae bloom can range in severity. Some toxins can attack the liver or the nervous system. Others might just irritate the skin and eyes. If water containing blue-green algae bloom is consumed, it can cause headaches, fever, diarrhea, abdominal pain, nausea and vomiting.

Some blue-green algae bloom has no toxins in it, it’s best to just not come in contact with it.

One Dauphin family can feel the love with Lennox and Steiner Plumbing and Heating by receiving a new furnace, just in time for winter.

It’s part if the 'Feel The Love' program that takes place on October 6th across North America.
On that day all participating Lennox dealer are installing new gas furnaces for the selected candidates at no cost. The dealers and their employees donate their labour and installation material.

Carla Wolfenden, the owner of Steiner Plumbing & Heating, is excited to be bringing this program to Dauphin.

“It started in Wisconsin by a Lennox dealer there where he wanted to give back to his community and help a family in need by providing them with a free furnace. It became so popular it spread across Wisconsin for a few years and they have installed a lot of them there. It spread across the United States and now into Canada the last couple of years. Now it’s in 22 states and provinces and they’ve installed hundreds of furnaces since the program started.”

“We first heard about the program when we were at an industry conference a couple of years ago,” Wolfenden continued. “It wasn’t in Canada yet, but we did express interest if it did ever come to Canada we would like to participate. It’s something Dauphin would really get behind, and I know we would really like to help out a family here. So we signed up and we hope that we get a lot of nominations before the deadline.”

Some of the criteria Lennox Industries look at include financial challenges, job loss, military service, and community service. As well as physical, mental, or social disabilities.

Wolfenden says all nominations are submitted online to Lennox where they choose a short list of three to five finalists. With that list, the local dealership gets to decide the family.

A 42-year-old man is missing from Swan River.

On August 20, 2018, at 8:50 am, the Swan River RCMP received a report of the missing man. Christopher Todd Dufresne was last seen leaving his residence, located on 3^rd Avenue NW in Swan River, at approximately 8:00 am on August 19.

Dufresne is described as 6’2”, 170 pounds, brown eyes, and grey hair. He was last seen wearing blue jeans and a black t-shirt.

It was proclaimed "Barry Trotz Day" and the buzz around Dauphin this past Wednesday was electric as Trotz brought Lord Stanley to the Parkland.

The day kicked off with a parade at 12:30 that began at Henderson School and finished up at Credit Union Place as thousands of people from the region were in attendance.

"All we can say is WOW," said Karen Rauliuk who was a part of the organizing committee. "Thank you to Dauphin and the entire Parkland. We didn't expect that many people. It was just absolutely fantastic, and Barry was blown away."

Despite the thousands of people packing the streets of Dauphin and Credit Union Place parking lot, Karen and the rest of the committee were able to pull everything off without a hitch.

"We really were blown out of the water," said Rauliuk. "We didn't know what to expect."

"Unfortunately not everyone was able to get inside the rink for a picture with Barry because there was just so many people," she added. "But, Barry was able to take the Cup outside and walk through the crowd and the public could take pictures. So, hopefully, that helped in any way for the people that didn't get in the rink."

Ste. Rose, McCreary and Alonsa are under a special air quality statement after smoke from forest fires in northern Manitoba drifted over to the region this morning.

Environment Canada says a cold front that came in last night also brought the smoke from fires going on between Red Lake and Bissett.

Individuals might experience symptoms such as increased coughing, throat irritation, headaches or shortness of breath

There is no air quality statement for the Dauphin area.

The Dauphin Fire Department is reminding everyone never to leave what you’re cooking unattended.

Around 7:30 this morning the DFD was called to fire alarms going off at Happy Haven.

Smoke was in the hallway and one of the suites and required a positive pressure fan to remove the smoke from the building.

The DFD warns that small fires can grow out of control rapidly.

Changes to the boundaries of all 57 electoral divisions in Manitoba will be up for public discussion next month.

The changes would see Dauphin and Swan River combine into one electoral district, as well, Ste. Rose Du Lac would become part of the Aggasiz electoral district. The changes, once the final report is made, won't take effect until the provincial general election in October of 2020.

A spokesperson from the Dauphin RCMP says the fires that have been happening are still being investigated.

The house fires on 3^rd avenue south west and 8^th avenue North East, and two dumpster fires are suspicious, however the car fire is not suspicious.

It is believed that all five fires are unrelated despite four being suspicious.

Parkland businesses that produce new and exciting food products are encouraged to enter into the Great Manitoba Food Fight.

It’s an annual event that supports small and medium-sized businesses in Manitoba and fast-tracks their rate of commercialization and growth in the food sector.

Shauna McKinnon, a Business Development Specialist with Manitoba Agriculture, says this is a great way to get you and your business out there.

“The industry folks that they will meet at the competition, you know, who have retail locations across Manitoba. So, we’re not simply focusing on the people who are processing in Winnipeg. We would like to see these Made In Manitoba sold right across the province and indeed right across Canada.”

“The event is really about connecting the food industry chefs, the restaurant association, distributors and retailers to people who are looking to get into that business.” McKinnon continues, “ So if they have a very interesting and innovative food product we try and hook them up with the movers and shakers in the food industry to see if they can begin selling, begin producing in larger quantities, and that sort of thing.”

Ten applicants will be judged in the food portion of the competition, and three will be selected for the alcoholic beverage competition.

Judges will select gold, silver and bronze winners in the food category and a single winner in the alcoholic beverage competition.

The competition will be held on September 19 in Winnipeg at De Luca’s 950 Portage Ave. location. The entry fee is $50, and a valid processing permit is required.
