Heavily Armed Man Arrested In Missouri

The Springfield Police Department in Springfield, Missouri have arrested one man after they responded to a report of a man having weapons and ammunition at a Walmart in the community.

The man who appeared to be in his twenties was wearing body armour. He’s also reported to have had loaded weapons and over 100 rounds of ammunition.

Prior to police arriving, a store manager pulled a fire alarm. The male with the weapons and ammunition tried to leave through an emergency exit, but a firefighter held him at gunpoint until the police arrived.

Police are now investigating and we’ll have more as additional information becomes available.

An Ontario farmer who had been found guilty of criminal negligence in the accidental death of his four-year-old son has been given a suspended sentence with three years probation.

Justice Julia Morneau of the Ontario Court of Justice sentenced Emanuel Bauman in a precedent-setting case.

Bauman from Grey Highlands was charged last August with criminal negligence causing death after his son died after falling out of a skid steer bucket. He was found guilty of the charge in May of this year.

The Crown had recommended a sentence of two years less a day, three years probation and a driving prohibition of 10 years. Bauman’s lawyer had argued for a suspended sentence with two or three years probation, along with the condition of speaking to others in the community about farm safety.

On August 30th of 2018, Bauman was building a laneway on his property. Using a skid steer, he pulled a trailer full of wood chips, with the chips landing in the laneway as he moved. His two children, 7-year-old Luke, and 4-year-old Steven were standing in the skid steer’s bucket.

Something diverted Bauman’s attention, causing him to look back. At that point, Steven fell out of the bucket. Bauman found the child on the ground with his head trapped under the bucket.

Steven then died from head injuries and his father was charged. Although he pleaded not guilty, Bauman accepted moral responsibility for the accident.

It's believed to be the only case in Canada where a child's accidental death on a farm led to a criminal charge.

Canada’s job vacancy rate stayed at a record high of 3.2 percent for the fourth quarter in a row.

429,000 private sector jobs - which is 23,000 more than 2018’s high - went unfilled for at least four months in 2019.

In Manitoba, the private sector job vacancy rate rose to 2.6 percent equalling 11,500 unfilled jobs, the fifth-highest percentage in the country.

Quebec and BC have the highest vacancy rates at 3.9 percent and Alberta has the lowest vacancy rate at 1.9 percent.

Employers with at least one vacancy are expected to push average wage levels up by 2.3 percent versus 1.5 percent by businesses without any openings.

The biggest shortages are in the personal services industry (mechanics, lawyers, landscapers, and funeral and daycare services) with a vacancy rate of 4.9 percent. With the information sector (banking, insurance, and computer programming) having the lowest rate at 2.1 percent.

Dry conditions in Riding Mountain National Park has caused the fire danger level to be extreme.

There won’t be a fire ban implemented but the park asks that everyone uses extra caution with campfires and other potential fire sources.

To lower the risk of a fire starting, keep campfires small and in designated pits, completely extinguish campfires by soaking it with water, stirring it, and soaking again, and dispose of cigarettes in proper ways.

Any suspected wildfires should be reported to Parks Canada Dispatch at 1-877-852-3100.

Today all blizzard proceeds go to the children’s hospital foundation.

Matt Zubec, the business consultant for the Manitoba district, says net proceeds from all blizzard sales go to the children’s hospital in Winnipeg.

“Last year, we raised 160 thousand dollars in Manitoba alone and that stays here and will go to the Children’s Hospital Foundation of Manitoba, to help them offset costs that are not in the budget that comes down from the government. Then they can buy some specialized equipment for the children.”

This year, DQ has added 4 stores in Manitoba including the one here in Dauphin and Zubec is hoping to beat last year’s total.

Zubec says this is the 17^th anniversary of Miracle Treat Day.

DQ has been raising money for hospitals for 35 years, helping out 170 hospitals and raising 145 million dollars.

Today marks the start of the Roblin Ag Society Fair and Rodeo.

The festivities kick off tonight with the King Farmer/Queen event and a Calcutta with fireworks to follow.

Tomorrow there will be a kickoff barbecue in front of the Co-op Grocery Store from 11-2 and CKDM will be there, then tomorrow night is the Rumble in Roblin car show.

Saturday and Sunday will be full of rodeo action featuring the Lil’ Britches Rodeo, High School Rodeo, the MRCA/CCA Rodeo with contestants who competed at The Calgary Stampede.

Other events and attractions include a magician, the exotic bird and small animal auction and the parade.

This past weekend was the 54th anniversary of Canada's National Ukrainian Festival.

CNUF board member, Cory LaFontaine thinks the Sunday night grandstand show was the highlight of the weekend.

"The finale on Sunday night was fantastic. So many people were very excited about it, it was an opportunity for these two dance groups, Volya from Edmonton and Pavlychenko from Saskatoon, to showcase what they can do. The finale featured 48 dancers, last time we had anywhere near that amount of dancers was in the 45th anniversary and that's when we featured 45 dancers for Shumka, now that dance on Sunday night was amazing. Again, I think that was the highlight or definitely the big show for everybody in attendance."

The grandstand show was different from past years where rock or pop stars performed.

Lafontaine adds the weather was perfect, the crowds were good, and the bands that performed were great.

Fusion Credit Union's "Cruisin' with Fusion Summer Tour" continues throughout the warm season.

CKDM's Alec Woolston will head over to the Inglis and Russel branches of Fusion Credit Union today (August 8th). At each stop in the tour, a fundraising BBQ is held with proceeds going to local initiatives.

So far during the tour, Parkland stops have included Dauphin, Winnipegosis, Rorekton, Gilbert Plains, Roblin, and Ethelbert.

"We are so excited to be able to bring this event to all of our communites, and give back by way of proceeds to our local organisations, it's been a great run so far" said Marketing Manager Lola Antony when we caught up with her at the Roblin stop last Thursday.

The tour will conclude at the Binscarth and Rossburn branches next Thursday, August 15th.

Brandon Police Service is looking for 16-year-old Katrianne Ironstand.

According to a release from Brandon Police, she was reported missing on July 28th and was last seen near the Tim Hortons on the 2800 block of Victoria Avenue in Brandon.

Ironstand is 5'4", approximately 90 pounds, with long brown hair and brown eyes. She was last seen wearing a blue jacket, a yellow and red dress, pink shoes, and carrying a black purse.

She could be in either the Winnipeg or Cross Lake area, and police are concerned for her well-being.

Winnipeg's Fort Garry Brewing Company has voluntarily recalled a number of their beer products due to cans and bottles that could potentially burst and cause injury.

The recall came after the brewery was alerted to some instances of secondary fermentation, which could cause containers to rupture.

Among the products recalled are Fort Garry Dark Ale, as well as their Pale Ale, Black Pearl Stout, Rouge Lager, and variety packs.

Customers who may have bought any of those affected products can return them for a full refund. For a list of the sizes and containers affected, go to the Liquor and Lotteries website.
