The Manitoba government has announced that school divisions across the province will be receiving 7 million dollars in funding for educational assistants and other resources to support students with special needs.

Education Minister Wayne Ewasko made the announcement as part of a lead-up to the Provincial Budget that'll be released on April 12.

Ensuring learning continues throughout the pandemic while prioritizing safety and health has been a priority of the government and the education system, noted Ewasko.

This funding will provide all Manitoba school divisions with an increase in their Special Needs Level 2 and 3 funding, which can be used to provide student-specific supports to help address special learning needs.

School divisions will not be required to submit applications, with some exceptions.

We'll have more on this when the budget is released next week.

The pork industry in Manitoba is trying to contain a number of challenges right now. The first is an outbreak of Porcine Endemic Diarrhea, which has a mortality rate of 80-100 percent in piglets under two weeks old.

The province is currently experiencing its worst outbreak of PED ever according to Manitoba Pork General Manager Cam Dahl.

We've had 92 cases since October. The PED outbreak remains top of mind and is one of the main issues we're working on as Manitoba Pork.

The other issue the province has been monitoring is the feral pig population. According to Dahl, the province is trying to stay ahead of the issue before it's too late.

Recently the province has announced funding to help support our wild pig work so that is ramping up now. We're looking at increasing trapping and increasing tracking, thats really where we are right now. Trying to ensure that we have a good handle on where the pigs are, where they're growing, where they're expanding, and where they're going into.

The Parkland Chamber of Commerce is continuing its lunch series with an event on Tuesday. Art Alexander is the featured speaker at the event according to Chamber Executive Director Stephen Chychota.

There are several ways to be a part of the event, including four partner communities, Gilbert Plains, Grandview, Winnipegosis, and Ste. Rose, where people will be able to participate in a group of their own if they can't make it in person.

You can sign up for the event at the chamber's website here.

The winner of the 2021 Dauphin Firefighter of the Year award was Ryan Murray.

As a part of the recognition that couldn’t be held last year the City of Dauphin and the RM of Dauphin were able to award Chief Cam Abrey with an award for his years of excellent service as well.

Chief Abrey was able to speak about the event and what it means to the firefighters.

The Firefighters really take it as a pat on the back from the employers, the City of Dauphin and the RM of Dauphin, and they feel that value. It's important for the morale of the firefighters and it also gives us a chance from the fire department side to make some presentations in recognition of the hours of training that individuals put in and for us as the administration of the fire department to say our thanks to them as well.

Chief Abrey also said that anyone who's interested in serving the community can head down to the fire station to discuss how to sign up and that all training will be provided if you want to join the Dauphin Fire Department.

The province of Manitoba announced that they’re widening the eligibility for a fourth dose of the COVID-19 vaccines to anyone aged 70 or older along with any indigenous resident aged 50 or older.

The widening will include all residents of personal care homes along with assisted living facilities and any First Nations, Inuit and Metis people aged 50 or older no matter where they live.

This announcement is coming off recommendations from the National Advisory Committee on Immunization (NACI) after they advised all provinces on Tuesday to begin to prepare for second booster doses to be available for those 80 and older.

The province previously made a recommendation in December for those who are immunocompromised to receive their fourth dose.

The province and NACI say that the fourth dose should be either Moderna or Pfizer and will be allowed to be administered 6 months after the third dose.

In Manitoba, the second boosters will be available as early as Mid-April and the province will continue to release information as more age groups become eligible.

The Dauphin Active Living Centre made a $5000 donation to the Parkland Ukrainian Family Fund. The money was raised during a Perogy Dinner Fundraiser at the end of March.

With this donation, the Parkland Ukrainian Family Fund has officially raised over $100,000. The Parkland Ukrainian Family Fund is now ready to accept Ukrainian families into our community, according to Jim Perchaluk, President of the Ukrainian Folk Arts Centre, and a trustee for the Fund.

We have shared information about our project with our federal and provincial governments, along with the Ukrainian Canadian Congress, requesting their assistance in providing us with the names and contact information of families from the war-stricken regions of Ukraine, who would be willing to relocate to our area with the intentions of settling permanently.

You can get more information about the Fund, by calling Larry at 204-648-5904, or Karen at 204-648-3567.
