The application deadline for the Dauphin & District Community Foundation’s (DDCF) regular grant program fall intake is fast approaching.

Kit Daley, DDCF Executive Director, says October 15 is the deadline to apply.

With some money leftover from the Foundation's spring intake, Daley tells CKDM there’s over $68,000 to grant out for things like city beautification, animal welfare, supporting children & youth, sports.

Applications for the federal government’s Emergency Community Support Fund — which is a separate funding program for charities helping people affected by COVID-19 — have until October 30 to be submitted. The online application for this program can be found here.

Manitoba has reported its largest increase of COVID-19 cases in a day, adding 84 new cases on Friday.

An additional 3 deaths have been announced: two women in their 80’s and a woman in her 70’s, all from Winnipeg. The total number of deaths due to COVID-19 is 30.

The province now has 2,428 cases with 933 active and 1,465 recovered. There are 25 people in hospital and 6 in intensive care.

One of today’s 84 cases is in Prairie Mountain Health. There have been no new cases reported in the Dauphin, Swan River, Riding Mountain, Duck Mountain, Agassiz Mountain, or little Saskatchewan health districts.

With the rising case numbers in the province, health officials want all Manitobans to use extra caution when celebrating Thanksgiving this year – limiting close contacts, and increasing cleaning and hand washing.

Manitoba posted a strong September, with another month of increasing employment rates as the province gained 15,100 jobs.

A press release from the province states Manitoba’s employment rate is now 0.3% higher than the pre-pandemic level.

Compared to August, full-time employment in the province saw a 2.1% increase, and part-time employment is up by 3.3%.

Manitoba’s unemployment rate has now crept down to 7% -- the second-lowest in Canada.

With the Thanksgiving weekend upon us, health officials have provided their guidance on the safest way to celebrate.

Chief provincial public health officer Dr. Brent Roussin is encouraging Manitobans to try and limit the number of contacts they have with people outside of their household.

“If you are eating together with others, try to keep that distance and avoid sharing condiments and utensils. But again, the recommendation is to limit gathering with people."

Other COVID-cautious Thanksgiving tips from the province include frequently cleaning high touch surfaces, washing hands regularly before and after eating, and to consider having one person serve the food to limit the sharing of utensils.

The City of Dauphin is advising of a temporary road closure tomorrow on 3rd Street NE between 1st Ave NE and Mountain Road.

The street will be closed Friday, October 9 to all traffic for repaving work.

The street is expected to reopen late in the evening.

Dauphin RCMP are investigating after a shot was fired at a home on Merrell Avenue.

Police received a complaint of a broken window at the home on Tuesday, October 6.

An investigation determined the window had been shot out by a firearm on Sunday, October 4 — between 11:30 p.m. and midnight.

Nobody was injured, and Dauphin RCMP continue to investigate.

Officials have reported 67 new cases of COVID-19 Thursday, and have ruled out one of the province’s previous cases.

Manitoba’s total case count is 2,344. Of the cases, 863 are active and 1,454 are recovered.

One of today’s new cases is in Prairie Mountain Health. There are no active cases in the Dauphin, Riding Mountain, or Agassiz Mountain health districts.

When it comes to active cases in the Parkland: the Little Saskatchewan health district has one active case, Brandon has 5, and the Whitemud health district (northeast of Brandon) has 6.

There has been a possible COVID exposure at the Riding Mountain Village Canada Post Outlet in The No. 5 Store at 21 PTH 5 in Riding Mountain, on Sept. 28 to Oct. 2 and Oct. 5 and 6 from 1 to 1:30 p.m. 

Prairie Mountain Health has moved its drive-thru testing site in Brandon. The site that was once at the Brandon Town Centre is now located off Van Horne Avenue East in Brandon.

Regular hours of operation are Monday to Thursday from 8:45 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. and Friday to Sunday from 8:45 a.m. to 3:15 p.m.

Manitoba Public Insurance (MPI) is warning customers of a fraudulent website offering to book road and knowledge tests.

The phony website disguised as MPI has been requesting personal information, and charging fees.

MPI is reminding customers that if they wish to book an appointment, they should do so by visiting the official website at mpi.mb.ca.

MPI only provides services through its Autopac agents, by visiting one of their service centres, or online at mpi.mb.ca, and appointments are only released to the public every Wednesday at 9:00 a.m.

Anyone who has booked an appointment on the fraudulent website and paid money is advised to report the incident to the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre.

A man was taken to hospital on Wednesday after shots were fired in Portage la Prairie.

On October 7th at around 9:10 p.m., RCMP received reports of gunshots and an injured man on Saskatchewan Avenue in Portage.

Once on scene, officers found a 38-year-old man suffering from gunshot wounds. He was taken to hospital in stable condition.

Witnesses report seeing two men dressed in black fleeing the area, and police are asking for help identifying them.

The Manitoba throne speech on Wednesday outlined the Pallister government’s priorities for the next year.

The speech featured five commitments, focusing on health care, education and child care, jobs, taxes and the economy.

It was announced the provincial education tax on property will be done away with earlier than expected.

The throne speech also laid out plans for legislation to ban illegal blockades of critical transportation routes.
