Manitoba has announced provincial park reservations will open next Monday, April 4th, and expand every few days until April 13th. The province has decided to add an additional two launch dates, to help spread the user load on its system.

The launch dates and times are as follows:

  • April 4 at 7 a.m. for all cabins, yurts, and group-use areas
  • April 6 at 7 a.m. for campsite reservations at Birds Hill, Falcon Beach, Falcon Lakeshore, and West Hawk Lake
  • April 8 at 7 a.m. for campsite reservations at all western and northern region parks (Asessippi, Bakers Narrows, Clearwater Lake, Duck Mountain, Manipogo, Paint Lake, Rainbow Beach, Rivers, Spruce Woods, Turtle Mountain, William Lake, and Wekusko Falls)
  • April 11 at 7 a.m. for campsite reservations at Grand Beach, Nopiming, and all remaining Whiteshell campgrounds (Caddy Lake, Big Whiteshell, Brereton Lake, Nutimik Lake, Opapiskaw, Otter Falls, Betula Lake, and White Lake)
  • April 13 at 7 a.m. for all remaining locations (Birch Point, Camp Morton, Hecla, Hnausa Beach, Lundar Beach, Moose Lake, St. Malo, Stephenfield, Watchorn, and Winnipeg Beach)

On top of the additional booking dates, the province has made some changes to its system. They plan to have its new system fully implemented by next year, but they've made a few changes now to address some of the issues that users have experienced in the past.

  • Additional computing resources have been added to increase system performance;
  • Improvements to increase the stability of the queue and reduce the likelihood of users losing their place in line; and
  • Immediate confirmations at the time of booking are provided by web page messaging with a confirmation email sent within 24 hours to help speed up the performance of the service.

The province has also made policy changes to make it easier for more people to enjoy cabins and yurts. The maximum stay in a cabin or yurt is now seven days, which is down from fourteen days last year. They've also limited the number of sessions you can book on opening day to two instead of the normal three.

The Roblin Famers Market isn't starting until May 14th, but they have started taking applications for vendors. Kelcey Harrison is running the Farmers Market and she's excited to give small businesses a chance to get their products to the public.

I think it'll be really great for the community and those businesses that dont have a brick and mortar space.

The plan is to host the market every second Saturday throughout the summer at the Lakeside Yoga & Healing studio. You can find the application form here, and you can contact Kelcey for more information at 306-620-8311.

Just before 8 p.m. Sunday, the Dauphin Fire Department responded to a structure fire about 13 miles northeast of Dauphin.

When the crew arrived, they were met by the owners and they said their detached shed was on fire.

Due to metal roofing, the walls and ceiling had to be removed from the interior in order to get to the concealed flames in the void spaces.

The fire is accidental in nature and was caused by insufficient clearance from a wood stove chimney.

Yesterday the Pine Creek First Nation in coordination with the Ebb and Flow First Nation announced they have joined in a partnership to develop their jointly owned land in Dauphin.

The two First Nations have both signed a letter of intent to develop the Urban Reserve plot of land directly north of the McDonalds in Dauphin on Main Street South.

The partnership will see them work with Petro Canada to develop and build a gas station with future space for electric vehicle charging stations.

The agreement will give all parties involved the chance to work together on a site plan and a budget to build the gas bar with the addition of high-speed electric vehicle charging stations when demand increases in the years to come.

The 8 acres of land, which was originally purchased by both First Nations back in 2007, was fully paid off by 2019 which then gave them the opportunity to develop this plan and partnership for the future development of the site. The development of the land will assist both First Nations in creating an economic profit centre that will, in turn, help out the communities as well as the City of Dauphin and the Parkland area.

The 2022 Indigenous Top Model Competition’s Top 20 will feature a teen from right here in the Parkland.

16-year-old Shaylene Chartrand from Dauphin, and Treaty from Pine Creek First Nation, will be off to the Alexander First Nation in Alberta on May 21st to compete in the Top 20 competition which will see the top 3 chosen to walk the runway at New York City Fashion Week in September while wearing Tishynah Buffalo Designs.

Shaylene’s journey started when her mom suggested she send in some pictures to the application process and out of the more than 100 people from across Canada and the US that entered she reached the Top 40.

Once in the Top 40, she was able to send in a short video about herself and a model walk video to enter for the Top 20 which she was successful at reaching.

Now that she’s in the Top 20 she has received help from her Treaty of Pine Creek First Nation who raised money for her to make the trip to Alberta for the final in May in order to try and earn that spot in NYC Fashion Week.

Shaylene can earn extra bonus points towards her bid for a top 3 spot by being the model to sell the most tickets to the event ahead of time. The tickets are on sale and you can purchase them while listing Shaylene Chartrand as the model who referred you. All tickets purchased will count towards her bonus points even if you can’t attend the event.

You can purchase tickets for the event here.

Dauphin's Countryfest unveiled their new sign along Highway 10 this afternoon. According to Duane McMaster, who's on the Countryfest board, it was about time for a new one.

A few years ago we had the sign taken down, the old one was rotten and starting to fall apart and we decided to change it up and get a new one.

The Countryfest Return to the Hill Celebration is at the Watson Art Centre tonight. There are limited tickets left and you can get them at Countryfest's website here.

A farmer in Manitoba is urging fellow farmers across the province to be on the lookout after his farm near Rivers Manitoba, south of Minnedosa, had 40 thousand dollars worth of Canola stolen from it.

Les Wedderburn and his brother run the farm and while checking their bins noticed someone stole between 1,500 and 1,600 bushels of Canola from one of the bins.

The Rivers Police Service is investigating the theft and Wedderburn said he’s taking precautions to prevent this from happening again by installing cameras that he can watch the footage from his phone.

On top of the cameras, he’s also using a product called Crop Guard which is a confetti-like product that’s put in the grain with a serial number specifically registered to the farmer.

The Manitoba Government has put out their March Flood Outlook and despite large amounts of snow this winter, lakes around the Parkland aren't expected to flood. Dauphin Lake is expected to have the highest rise above normal for this time of year, with around 2 extra feet expected after spring runoff.

Lake Manitoba is currently sitting 1.41 feet below normal for this time of year, but after spring runoff is expected to be right in the middle of its operating range. Lake Winnipegosis is less than a foot under its normal for this time of year and is expected to be sitting just below its normal level after the runoff.

These numbers are better than expected due to the slow start to this spring's melt, however, they could still change. The numbers the government put out are based on average precipitation, and an above-average amount of rain this spring could change the outlook.

The Royal Manitoba Winter Fair returns to the Keystone Centre in Brandon next week. Provincial Exhibition's Manager of Operations and Sponsorship Lead, Rick Dillabough, says they have a great week full of events planned.

So much going on throughout the week with a lot of special entertainment, the heavy horse shows of course, the cattle at the north end, the hackneys, the Ag education area.

While they have been working hard to get everything ready for the event, they're not done yet.

There's a lot of moving parts, a lot of things that still need to come together over the next couple of days, but we're all excited about Monday and the start of the fair.

You can get your tickets and see the event schedule here.
