Wondering how you can register to run for Mayor or Reeve in this fall's municipal election? There will be packages available that explain everything you need to register. These Packages will be available at City Hall and the Municipality Office starting May 2nd.

Senior Election Official for the City of Dauphin, the RM of Dauphin, and the Mountain View School Division, Krik Dawson says there are a number of steps you need to take before registering.

Part of the package is a municipal candidate guidebook that helps walk the candidate through the process.

The Mountain View School Division has announced that school buses are canceled and schools are closed for Monday April 25th in all communities with the exception of Roblin.

The cancellations and closures are due to continued power outages and unsafe road, street and sidewalk conditions.

The MVSD administration office complex will also be closed tomorrow until the power is restored in the area.

According to Manitoba Hydro's official Twitter page, because Dauphin was hit extremely hard by the storm, some places could be without power for multiple days.

According to the Manitoba Hydro Website, there are now 870 outages, affecting 19,864 customers. Each outage has a different estimated restoration time, and you can find the most up-to-date information about the estimated times here.

This morning the Dauphin Fire Department was called to an apartment on 1st Avenue Northwest after reports of smoke in the building.

Firefighters arrived on the scene and were told that a tenant in the ground floor apartment was still inside. Crews were able to locate the tenant who had put out a grease fire on her stove.

The fire had started when a pot of grease was left on the stove when the power went out with the element left on and once power was restored it caught fire. 

As the firefighters began to clear the smoke from the building they found two tenants who were still asleep in the apartment. 

The tenants from the apartment were all assessed for smoke inhalation by EMS and were released.

There were no injuries as a result and no estimates on damages were available at this time.

The DFD would like to remind residents to never leave their cooking unattended and to always make sure elements are completely off when they leave the cooking area, especially in the event of a power outage.

Manitoba Hydro is currently reporting 598 power outages across the province, though that number continues to increase.

According to their website, there are currently over 15,000 Hydro Customers being affected by power loss.

Early this morning the Dauphin Fire Department responded to reports of a vehicle fire on Mountain Road in Dauphin.

Firefighters located the vehicle at the corner of 5th Avenue Northeast and 3rd Street Northeast.

The vehicle was fully engulfed in flames when DFD arrived on the scene but the fire was quickly put out.

This fire is considered suspicious in nature and if anyone has any information they are asked to call the Dauphin RCMP at 204-622-5050.

The Dauphin Recreation Services is getting ready to host their first Spring Market at the Rec Complex Curling Rink.

The Market will feature many local artists, local small businesses as well as a section for a garage sale. 

The Market will run from 11am-4pm on Sunday May 1 and is free for everyone to attend. 

Dauphin Rec Services Programs and Promotions Coordinator Tamara Kolida said there'll be a door prize available to win at the market.

All the vendors have donated something to it but you can't buy tickets for the door prize. You have to purchase something from a vendor to be entered into the door prize draw.

Tamara also said with Mother's Day approaching this is a great way to get your mom a gift.

Mother's Day is coming up, this is the Sunday before Mother's Day, and this is the perfect opportunity to give your mom an amazing gift. There are so many gift options for your mom so don't miss out on this event.

There will also be a canteen open on-site while the market is happening for you to grab some food and drinks while you shop.

Environment Canada has announced that there's a winter storm warning in effect for Dauphin and the Parkland after the earlier winter storm watch was upgraded to a warning this afternoon.

The rain will change to snow, at times heavy, over the Parkland area Saturday afternoon and total snowfall accumulations by the time the snow ends Sunday afternoon could be 30-40 cm.

In addition to the heavy snow, strong northerly winds with gusts approaching 80 km/h are expected on Saturday creating poor visibility and blowing snow.

Environment Canada says there's also a risk of freezing rain Saturday morning as the rain changes over to snow causing roads to become extremely slippery.

The Dauphin Fire Department was getting ready for their training when they received an unexpected call. A cat had climbed into the chimney of a house and the owners had been unable to free it. Chief Cam Abrey said he's never had a call like this one.

This isn't your typical cat in a tree call because we get plenty of those, and no we don't normally go out for cats up in trees because they will make there way down eventually. This was a little bit different situation because the animal was entrapped within something.

Neighbors weren't able to tell firefighters who the cat belonged to, so they called Dauphin Animal Control. The cat is now at the pound, waiting for her owners to pick her up. If you know who the cat belongs to, call the City of Dauphin Pound at 204-638-3044.

Another winter storm is on its way to the Parkland, however warmer weather could mean we see as much rain as we do snow. Another Colorado low will move through the Dakotas this weekend and will bring a mix of wintery weather to WestMan and the Interlake areas from Friday morning through Sunday.

Beginning this morning, light snow will transition to rain and persist until Saturday afternoon. The transition back to heavy wet snow is expected to occur from west to east through Saturday afternoon and evening. Storm-total snowfall accumulations of 20 to 50 cm are still expected by Monday afternoon.

Very strong winds with gusts of 70 to 90 km/h will bring blowing snow, causing poor visibility. According to Environment Canada, there will likely be areas of freezing rain as well.

The Dauphin Active Living Centre is hosting an event this afternoon which is being put on by the Parkland Chapter of the Citizen’s Climate Lobby.

The event will run from 12pm-2pm and all are invited.

*With the event being held at the Active Living Centre proof of vaccination and masks are required.*

During the event, there'll be an E-Bike on-site so residents can take a look and learn about them as well as a fun activity for all ages where everyone is invited to bring their empty 2L pop bottles to make micro gardens.

Esther Fyk is a member of the Parkland Chapter and said Earth Day has a very special meaning.

Earth Day is a time when we can think about our relationship with the Earth and how we are interconnected with everything. So without soil we can't live, without water we can't live and without clean air we can't live. We are all interconnected and we need to be cognisant of that all the time and Earth Day is a reminder where we can celebrate this.

There's also a photo contest being put on by the Citizen's Climate Lobby in coordination with the event for Earth Day where residents can take before and after pictures of an area that they're going to be cleaning up for Earth Day and then submit them to the CCL with winners being picked on Sunday April 24.
