On Friday, the Virden RCMP responded to a collision involving two semi-trucks on Highway 1 west of Virden. Both trucks were traveling east when one rear-ended the other.
The driver of the truck that rear-ended the other, a 23-year-old male from Winnipeg was pronounced deceased at the scene, while his passenger, a 28-year-old male from Winnipeg, had minor injuries. The driver of the truck that was hit, a 36-year-old male from Winnipeg, was not injured.
The Virden RCMP is still investigating the collision, and it appears that road conditions were a factor.

Sunrise Credit Union has donated $50,000 dollars to the Ukraine Humanitarian Appeal Fund, established by the Canada-Ukraine Foundation and the Ukrainian Canadian Congress. The money from the fund goes directly where it is needed on the ground in Ukraine.
Sunrise Credit Union is also accepting donations on behalf of the Canada-Ukraine Foundation to support millions of Ukrainian families displaced from their homes. Sunrise President and CEO Tim Klassen talked about the donation,
"We are contributing towards providing financial assistance, relief, and recovery, and hope for a swift end to this conflict. We are committed to uplifting their lives and the lives of all those who have been affected"

An artist that grew up in Swan River is doing Ukrainian-themed tattoos, with the proceeds going to support those in Ukraine. Heather Mellor got her start as a tattoo artist in Dauphin and has been working in Winnipeg for the last 5 years. Mellor is of Ukrainian descent, and when she heard about Russia's Invasion of Ukraine, she wanted to help however she could.
"I saw the news the day the war started and I was just so shocked, heartbroken for the people in Ukraine. My great grandparents came over from Ukraine, so it hit close to home"
Mellor has been booked solid because of her fundraiser, so she's had to pivot, and started selling prints on her website to fundraise as well.
"I have released prints that are availible for Purchase on my website, and all the money from that will be going to donations as well"

It's not too late to sign up for the next heavy equipment operator training course at Hockridge Trade School.
Jeff Hockridge, the school's owner and operator says that when they finish, students will be certified for a number of machines.
"Students will be certified to operate seven pieces of machinery, including Backhoe, Loader, Excavator, Dozer, Articulated Rock Truck, Grader, Skid Steer"
The next program will be starting at the end of March.

City of Dauphin crews will be clearing snow in the downtown business area and along Main Street tonight starting at 9.
They ask that people avoid parking on the street until routes have been cleared.

Reit-Syd Equipment in Dauphin will make an announcement this Wednesday, about a significant fundraising program for Ukrainian Refugees that will have an opportunity to come to the Parkland in the coming weeks. For people in the community wondering about monetary donations and contributions in support of Ukraine, this would be a local fund you can donate to, that will help support these refugees.
Reit-Syd Equipment General Manager Don Tarrant asks you that consider supporting this local Parkland fund once all the details are announced.
We know a lot of people want to donate, so we're asking individuals, families, organizations, and businesses to donate what you can, and to wait until Wednesday when we can make an announcement with full details.
The announcement will be made on 730 CKDM on Wednesday.

Late Saturday night, the Dauphin Fire Department was called to an apartment in the southeast end of the city where a fire alarm had gone off. When crews arrived, they went into the building and knocked down a fire in the second-floor hallway, and also found two other fires in one of the bedrooms.
The fires were intentionally set and both the RCMP and DFD are investigating the incident. Anyone with information about the fires is asked to call the RCMP at 204-622-5050.

Earlier this week the Mountain View School Division announced that both the Dauphin Regional Comprehensive Secondary School (DRCSS) and the Winnipegosis Collegiate Institue were successful in receiving grants from the provincial government.
The schools applied through the 2021-2022 Skills Strategy Equipment Enhancement Fund (SSEEF) for funding and received word this week that they were awarded the grants.
The DRCSS will be receiving approximately $75,000 which will go towards their Automotive Technology Department to further assist the students in learning real-life skills that could be used in the automotive job world after high school.
Meanwhile, the Winnipegosis Collegiate Institue will be receiving approximately $31,000 from the grant which will go towards the Industrial Arts Department to purchase equipment that students can learn to use including saws and other technology used in the trades like woodworking and metalwork.

Sunrise Credit Union has announced that they’re committing $50,000 towards the Onanole and District Recreation Centre Renewal: The Capital Campaign.
The campaign will assist in the maintenance of the building itself as well as the grounds around it. The renewal will also continue to help the community that live, work and play in the area around the Rec Centre.
The goal for the campaign is to hit $1,000,000 and once it’s complete it will have helped with over 15 different projects after the arena roof, siding and insulation along with the ball diamond fencing and dugouts along with the hall flooring has already been completed.
The projects that remain and are still in progress include:

- Covered South Deck
- Ball Diamond & Field
- Commercial Air Conditioner
- Fitness Centre Change Room & Equipment Upgrade
