RCMP are reminding everyone to drive safely, after a number of recent fatalities on Manitoba roads.

This past week alone, 7 Manitobans have died in vehicle collisions.

Already this year, 55 people have died on Manitoba roads.

About 70 percent of these deaths are related to alcohol, speeding, distracted driving, or not wearing a seatbelt or helmet.

RCMP there will be an increased police presence on the lookout for impaired and distracted drivers this weekend.

Once again, the COVID-19 testing site in Dauphin will be open this Sunday, August 23, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Prairie Mountain Health say they will continue offering special weekend hours when there is a higher demand for testing.

The Dauphin testing site is located at the Community Health Services Building Parking Lot (625 Third St. SW) — operating with regular hours Monday to Friday, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Unless recommended by public health, only individuals experiencing COVID-19 symptoms should go for testing. Individuals experiencing symptoms are asked to seek testing 24 hours after symptoms start.

Prairie Mountain Health is operating several testing sites, with sites in Dauphin, Swan River, Camperville, Waterhen, and two sites in Brandon.

34 new cases of COVID-19 have identified in Manitoba on Friday.

This brings the total number of lab-confirmed cases in the province up to 830.

There are 265 active cases in Manitoba, with five people in hospital and one in intensive care. There have been twelve COVID-related deaths in the province.

Five of the news cases announced Friday are in the Prairie Mountian Health region.

The Prairie Mountain Health region remains elevated to the restricted “orange” level. As of Monday, Aug. 24, masks will be mandatory in all public indoor places and at all indoor and outdoor public gatherings in the region. Public gatherings will also be restricted to 10 people, both indoors and outdoors.

Public health officials are advising of a potential exposure to COVID-19 the Canadian Tire store in Portage la Prairie on August 18th, from approximately 1:30 p.m. to 2:00 p.m.

The testing site in Dauphin will be open this Sunday, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Bowsman’s Corey Hurren briefly appeared in court on Friday morning. 

The Manitoba military reservist is accused of ramming through a gate at Rideau Hall while heavily armed.

Hurren is set to return to court September 18th -- as he faces 21 weapons charges, and one count of threatening the Prime Minister.

According to police, Hurren had several weapons when he made his way onto the grounds of Trudeau’s family residence.

Environment Canada has issued a severe thunderstorm watch for the Parkland.

A low-pressure system is moving across the region today and will bring thunderstorms to southern Manitoba today. Some of these storms may become severe.

The advisory is in effect for the following areas:

Dauphin Recreation Services have announced that the splash park at Vermillion Park will be closed for the remainder of the season, as of Monday, August 24th.

They cite rising COVID-19 case numbers, and new public health restrictions as the reason for the closure.

Dauphin Rec announced that also starting Monday, they will be requiring everyone entering their facilities to wear a non-medical face mask.

They will have some available for purchase if you don’t have one handy.

Today is the final day votes will be counted in the leadership contest for the Conservative Party of Canada.

269,469 members are eligible to vote and as of Wednesday, the party had received over 150 thousand mail-in ballots, more than the total number of votes cast in the 2017 leadership race.

Derek Sloan, Erin O’Toole, Leslyn Lewis, and Peter MacKay are in the running to replace Andrew Scheer.

Local Dauphin-Swan River-Neepawa MP Dan Mazier had previously endorsed Erin O’Toole in the race.

All mail-in ballots must arrive by 4 pm to be counted and the winner will be announced on Sunday.

Two staff members at a potato processing facility in Portage la Prairie have tested positive for COVID-19.

On Monday, J.R. Simplot Company learned of one worker that tested positive.

Following that, a dozen staff members that were in close contact with the worker got tested.

Those tests resulted in an additional positive case.

As of yesterday afternoon, the company was waiting for the results of two more tests.

As a result of the second positive case, 14 employees are self-isolating.

The company says the area the first employee worked has been deep cleaned and the plant hasn’t been shut down.

Friday, August 21 Update:

The heat warning has ended for the Parkland region.

After multiple days of 30+ temperatures and overnight lows of 17 degrees, the weather looks to cool off slightly heading into the weekend.

Highs of 24, 26, and 27 are forecasted for today and the weekend.

Environment Canada has issued a heat warning for Dauphin and many other areas in the Parkland.

Temperatures reaching 33 degrees Celsius combined with overnight lows near 17 degrees Celsius are expected for the next 2 days.

The hot weather is tracking eastward from Saskatchewan and will affect southern Manitoba over the next couple of days.

Environment Canada advises the public to watch for the effects of heat illness: swelling, rash, cramps, fainting, heat exhaustion, heatstroke and the worsening of some health conditions.

They say outdoor workers should take regularly scheduled breaks in a cool place, and to never leave people or pets inside a parked vehicle.

A fatal vehicle collision is being investigated in Portage la Prairie, after an SUV was struck by a train on August 20th.

At around 12:10 p.m., RCMP responded to the accident, and investigators say the SUV was travelling south on Road 52 West, when it was hit by a train travelling east.

The driver of the vehicle, a 71-year-old man from Bagot was pronounced dead on the scene.

RCMP continue to investigate.

The search is over for the murder suspect accused of fatally stabbing a man in Dauphin on Saturday, August 15th.

23-year-old Nicholas Ryan-McKinnon was found by Whitehorse RCMP, and has been arrested.

He’s been charged with 2nd-degree murder and aggravated assault.

On August 15th, at around 3:40 a.m., Dauphin RCMP responded to a stabbing at a home on 7th Ave. SE, where they found a 32-year-old man who had died from stab wounds.

An 18-year-old man was also injured, and was taken to hospital but was released.

RCMP are thanking the public for their assistance.
