Last night Rene Maillard from Ste. Rose was awarded as an Honourary Life Member of the Association of Manitoba Municipalities at their 19th Annual Convention in Brandon.
Maillard served as Mayor for the Town of Ste. Rose from 1978 until he stepped down in 2014. During that time he served on the following boards: Acting Chair of the Manitoba Municipal Board; First Chair of the Parkland Regional Health Authority; Parkland District Director on the Board of the Association of Manitoba Municipalities; the Building and Recovery Action Plan Appeals Commission; the Manitoba Employees Benefit Board of Trustees and the Manitoba Disaster Assistance Appeal Board.
During his time as Mayor, he aided in several community projects such as the preserving and restoring of a heritage school building to use as a community library; upgrading the water treatment plant; construction of a dyke; obtaining the first enhanced Residential Home for Seniors; negotiated with the provincial government to established the Addictions Foundation of Manitoba in the Willard Monson House; constructed a new fire hall, curling rink and town office; formed the first recreation commission and hired the first recreation director; development of the ball diamonds; formation of the Ste. Rose Community Development Corporation; construction of Parc Molgat Campgrounds and main improvements throughout Ste. Rose.
He was instrumental in the development of the Turtle River Development Centre, which consisted of the Town of Ste. Rose, the R.M. of Ste. Rose, and R.M. of Ochre River. This center provides physician and dental services for the communities. As well as took part in the construction of the new Primary Health Care Centre and new ambulance garages.
Maillard is currently the President of the Dauphin Broadcasting Company and is involved with the Ste. Rose Grotto Restoration Committee.
