With harvest underway, hemp production facilities are preparing to receive the bulk of this year’s crop.

Hemp Sense, an environmentally-friendly processing plant in Gilbert Plains is predicting a good year. According to Lyall Bates, President of Hemp Sense, the market for hemp products is always getting stronger.

“There are more markets opening all the time. We’ve got some contacts that heard Australia will now be accepting this November hemp for food grade. They can use it for food, which they couldn’t before. We’re hearing that, Europe is not so far away; so if Europe opens up that’s going to be a huge market.”

Bates says the market is still new and everyone is learning the best way to grow hemp. If anyone wants to get into growing hemp, there are producers who have grown the crop for more than a decade that can give advice on how to grow the plant in the region.
