Cases of the whooping cough in southern Manitoba have been linked to infants not being vaccinated says the Southern Health - Santé Sud region.
Whooping cough or pertussis, is a bacterial infection that can be spread through either coughing or sneezing.
According to Medical Officer of Health for Prairie Mountain Health Doctor Jas Atwal, if not handled properly the cough can have serious repercussions.
"Whooping cough is a bacterial infection that occurs, and basically is causes a respiratory illness where an individual will get into sort of a coughing fit that last for several weeks... it can end up being a severe cough which can end up leading to vomiting and if your younger or have underling health conditions it can make you actually very sick where you end up in hospital."
Doctor Atwal also said the best way in avoiding whooping cough is to make sure that parents and infants get their vaccinations as required.
