Criminally Charged Police Officer Killed in Crash Outside Winnipeg, Reports Say

There are multiple media reports that a Winnipeg police officer facing dozens of criminal charges has died in a head-on collision with a gravel truck.

The reports say that 42-year-old Constable Trent Milan was killed just outside the city yesterday morning.

Last month, city police announced that Milan was facing 34 charges, including theft, drug possession and possession of prohibited weapons.

Deputy Chief Danny Smyth said the 18-year veteran officer was also facing charges of obstruction, sharing police information and possession for the purpose of trafficking drugs including cocaine, methamphetamine, ecstasy and marijuana.

Rainfall Warning

The Parkland is under a rainfall warning.

Environment Canada says the system should pull away Wednesday but including yesterday a total of 50 to 100 millimetres is expected.

Yesterday the City of Dauphin said crews were working to unplug storm drains and if residents wanted to help they could clear the leaves from their catch basins along the curb in front of their home.

Sche Raz Travels to Toronto

A Ukrainian dance group in Dauphin got to see things from the other side of the stage this summer.

Sche Raz member Jerry Joss says to celebrate 10 years as a group they took a trip to Toronto to check out their Ukrainian festival, as well as some other sights.

He says after performing in Vegreville, the group opted to just be tourists in Toronto.

"We wanted to be, you know, the people who would be then able to watch a show. Rather than always being in it we thought it would be fun to actually be the participants of it, and I think that worked out really well."

Joss says they considered entering a parade but again decided to participate from the crowd.

The crash in May 2015 took the lives of three youngsters who were returning home from a football camp. They were in a construction zone when their vehicle was hit from behind.

The force of the crash sent the car into a truck which hit worker Sam Fetherston of Courtenay, B.C.

Changes Coming to Housing Market

Ottawa is moving to curb risk in the housing market.

Finance Minister Bill Morneau says measures include changes to the principal residence tax exemption, which will now only be available to Canadian residents -- and families will only be allowed to designate one home as their primary residence.

Ottawa will also beef up rules for insured mortgages to ensure that borrowers don't take on more debt than they can handle if interest rates go up or their income drops.

The changes come amid concerns housing costs in Toronto and Vancouver have become unaffordable for many Canadians while foreign investors buy homes and flip them for a quick profit.
