Alonsa Conservation District Gets a Drone for Surface Water Data

Alonsa's Conservation District Manager says comprehensive data is needed to deal with high levels of surface water in some of the Rorketon area.

Shawn Gurke says the conservation district is proud that they've managed to obtain a survey-grade mapping drone for the area.

"What it provides is a digital elevation model, accurate down to two centimetres."

Gurke says the equipment was bought with external funding -- no tax dollars.

A meeting was recently held in Rorketon to discuss the high water issue.

CUP-W Issues Strike Notice

Canada Post and the union representing thousands of its employees will sit down with a special mediator today.

The two sides have been negotiating for more than nine months, but are still far apart on issues of pay equity and pension changes.

Federal Labour Minister MaryAnn Mihychuk says she hopes to see a "significant resolution'' to the labour dispute by Sunday.

The Canadian Union of Postal Workers has issued a 72-hour strike notice, but it's not clear whether the job action would affect delivery.

Sheila North Wilson, grand chief of MKO, says the closure will affect many First Nations businesses in the area.

North Wilson says her group wants to meet with Premier Brian Pallister about First Nation ownership of Tolko's mill operations, as well as First Nations securing timber volumes in Tolko's forest licence area.

Classic Car Night A Weekly Summer Feature in Dauphin

A car show in Gilbert Plains has helped inspire the return of a Class Car Night in Dauphin.

Inky Mark says he was at a car show at the Gilbert Plains homecoming, and people were asking why Dauphin didn't have anything like it anymore.

"People wanted to know why Dauphin isn't doing anything about old cars, classic cars. We have an A&W here, right? So I decided to talk to a bunch of people who were there and they said, 'well, let's get it rolling again.'"

The Classic Car Nights have been running each Thursday at Dauphin's A&W, but Mark says it only runs July and August, so yesterday was the last of the year.
