Bible Camp Building Ruined by Fire

Dauphin's fire chief is calling the staff at the local bible camp "phenomenal" after a fire destroyed one of the site's buildings.

The Dauphin Bible Camp's old main lodge burned to the ground yesterday.

Cam Abrey says in a Facebook post staff looked after campers, while offering water, food, and other help to firefighters who fought the blaze for several hours.

At this time, CKDM has not learned what may have caused the fire.

Dauphin Neighbourhood Renewal Holds AGM

There's plenty on Dauphin Neighbourhood renewal's plate for the coming year, but it remains to be seen what initiatives they will really gun for.

Some of what was discussed at yesterday's annual general meeting includes ways to bring people downtown, working with other organizations, and housing.

DNRC executive director Mary Myhre says housing is something that they're really thrilled to be working on.

"We're forming a new partnership with a Housing First chapter that is starting in Dauphin and it looks like there's a lot of good work to be done through the partners they have around their table as well. Housing is definitely one of our big things."

Myhre says they're going into a time of community consulation and building a new five year plan, so their direction can change or stay the same. But she says housing is important in Dauphin.

No Grain to be Shipped Through Port of Churchill This Season

The Port of Churchill has laid off dozens of employees and announced there will be no grain shipment this season, only freight service.

At least 40 of the workers were given two weeks notice, while others are still unsure if they have a job or not.

Advocates for grain producers say the closure is troubling on several levels.

Elden Boon of the Hudson Bay Route Association said the biggest problem is there is grain currently destined for shipment through Churchill, and they're not sure what will become of that grain.

Several Killed in Knife Attack at Mentally Disabled Persons Facility in Japan

Hearses have entered a Japanese facility for the mentally disabled where at least 19 people were killed and 25 were wounded in a knife attack early today in suburban Tokyo.

A young Japanese man went on a stabbing rampage at his former workplace, months after he gave a letter to Parliament outlining the bloody plan and saying all disabled people should be put to death.

He surrendered to police two hours after the attack -- which authorities said killed or injured about a third of the 150 patients at the facility in a matter of 40 minutes.
