Canada's current framework for the agriculture industry is set to expire in 2018, and ag ministers country-wide have helped hash out what the next one will look like.

Manitoba agriculture minister Ralph Eichler spoke to reporters by teleconference this morning about last week's meetings in Calgary with his federal, provincial, and territorial counterparts. He says public trust was the primary commitment made.

"We want to maintain an open book on food policy, and continue to demonstrate that our agri-food products... are safe and sustainable."

Other topics covered in Calgary include research and innovation, business risk management, and trade. Eichler says expanding the domestic market wasn't discussed at the federal level as much as it has been internally, but Manitoba wants that market to grow as well.
